My 1989 Nissan Sentra had a bulletproof transmission. Imagine all the stupid things a 16 year old would do to a car and my Sentra handled it. I just did the routine oil changes and some minor maintenance and it just kept running. I will admit the engine starting knocking at the 175,000 mile mark, but I blame myself for driving the car so hard.

Im doing the same with my Jeep Patriot’s jatco CVT. Before doing a fluid/filter change I tracked the fluid temp in summer heat for a week or so, after service the temp dropped by about 20F on average. The filter on the trans fluid cooler was so gummed up the pleats were folding over. I assume most of fluid was pushed through the bypass instead of the cooler. This was at 50k, the mfr recommended service interval is 120k…

I continue not to understand why, when a manufacturer offers a manual in other markets, they deny it to US buyers. But I do recognize that says more about US drivers than the car manufacturer. Sad, because small power small cars are 1000 times better with a manual in every way that matters.

To meet emission control specs in the USA.... I've been told it's so they can let the robots control the specific shift points, engine revs, fuel mixture, etc. to keep the emission levels within the specs they need to meet the USA standards. Don't know if it's true, but it sounds plausible enough.

One thing I always note for people crying about "manuals are dying" no they aren't. Around the world they are still being sold as the affordable option. Outside of the US auto is considered more of a luxury. The reason why we dont have affordable cars is because companies decided we get enough financing so why bring the affordable option to the US?

American drivers don't buy cars. They buy loans for the privilege of driving a vehicle owned by a stealership. The stealerships set the demand to the manufacturer. This has eff-all to do with emissions standards. That's a right-wing / libertarian (i.e. incorrect) talking point. Other countries are waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the US in that regard and still you can buy manuals. We got receipts, stop sharing bs
@toyyoda3710

@@MR3DDev Because people that need affordable cars buy off lots the same day they go shopping... Why? because the old car just died and they need a car for tomorrow and his point is sure, you can order a base car and wait for 6 weeks or pay another 75 a month for options that cost the car company very little and get a car right now... The USA is seen as a cash cow with nothing but rich people and companies like Apple, Nike and Nissan sell us cheap junk made in China for double what they charge people in Russia. Since the take over by Renault Nissan has fallen three notches per year every year.

Being completely honest, I have one of the first Nissan Versa Notes with CVT transmission. I don't take care of it nearly as much as I should. It's more of my wife's car, but we are about to hit 100k miles without any CVT issues. This car has driven from the Gulf to the east coast to the west coast and is still a daily driver. I don't know if it is user error that causes so many Nissan CVTs to die or if it's just a factory lottery. Either way, I really wish we got more manual transmissions in these cars. I believe the Versa is the only one in the states with a manual as an option, but only on the base model ='(

i work in car rental, and I drive this generation of Sentra around a lot. as an owner of a B15 Spec V, the B18 picked right back up where the B16 and B17 fumbled and took the platform in the direction it should have gone when the B15 needed to be replaced. it's an amazing car, new life for the Sentra platform, and the base model cars we have in our rental fleet can easily outdo what my modded B15 is already capable of. all of Sarah's thoughts on this car are a mirror of my own thoughts on the B18, from the well deserved praise to the little negatives she brought up. the B18 just needs its chance to truly become what it can really be and reach its fullest potential, and it can shine like its SE-R predecessors once did. my hope in Nissan is not very deep, however, but I myself would very much like to see Nissan bring some inexpensive fun back to their lineup. theSR is setting the right foundation for it, now they just need to build something amazing with it.

What was the weird whine sound it made at the end of each rev? Sounded like it was jumping another 1000 rpm. You made an excellent point about analyzing the reliability and longevity of cars in this price range. By definition, cars in this range are bought by people who likely can barely afford maintenance, making these far more likely to make an appearance in episodes of Just Rolled In but that may not accurately reflect the design or build quality of the car itself, only the economic strata of the typical buyer.

Thanks for sharing. Some important points. This vehicle also has low tires in an urban environment with bumpers and deceleration strips. Parking on a half-pavement you will hear the metal sound of the wheel plowing the road. Under the hood looks messy and access is less convenient changing belts, etc.

My wife has a 2012 Sentra that she keeps in top shape. I cannot believe how much stuff you can get in the trunk of that car. Nice to know Nissan still makes a big trunk on the Sentra.

As a former b-17sr owner I can say that the gas mileage, visual aesthetics of the vehicle are the only two things that are alright and "cruising" at 80mph. CVT is the reason I'll never go back though. Also B-17sr reminded me of a cool flying fortress. Cute fit : )

Hi Sarah, my Talking Snake told me to show you this because you like to learn about stuff. So here it is: The first production car to use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) was the 1958 DAF 600, built in the Netherlands. However, the idea for a CVT has been around for centuries, with Leonardo da Vinci sketching a design in 1490. Other early patents for CVTs were filed in the 1880s by Daimler and Benz.

I really hope that Nissan did not give up on the VC system. As expected, it had some VERY serious initial production reliability problems, but could end up being something we all want in a turbocharged engine. The VC system is essentially the 2020 version of VVT, especially if Nissan's claims of improving balance and ring wear(inline formats) are true. Given the problems that people had with it, it is perfectly reasonable for them to pull it from the market for a year or two and get it better sorted so that it does not end up with a Powershift, Vanos, self milling Hyundai I4, or GM V8 bottom end(16'-current fail bearings) reputation.

Would be a nice little compact if a sporty-trim manual transmission was available in the USA. Not interested in owning anything with a belt/chain design CVT transmission though.

My second car was a 99 Infiniti I30T with the 3 L VQ, I loved that car. In fact I sold it to my aunt and she still driving it after I ordered the Subaru thing I didn’t like about the car the axle, beam rear suspension, and the four-speed automatic (you could order a manual but hardly anybody did)

It reminds my first car, Nissan Sentra 2003, 2.5L model and it's a power house for a compact body. However, the big engine deserves an engine bay of full size sedan like Altima. It was service nightmare, especially, when I needed to change both cam shaft and crank shaft sensors. Hope this model won't be the same case. But I have to say, Nissan did a lot of improvements and innovations in this model after 20+ years.

Sara you have a way of making a so-so car seem interesting. You do outstanding work with your reviews. Point in case the Toyota Sequoia TRD review. I wanted to go buy one after your review. I started watching a guys review of the same vehicle. It came across as boring in his review. Keep up the great work you do on here.

I had a Sentra SER Spec-V. I wish I still did! It was much cheaper than the competition. The track tuned suspension didn't do well with city potholes & no snow traction on summer tires but it was otherwise totally reliable & a ton of fun. It had a 6 speed manual & Brembo brakes so no fade or dive at all & a short stopping distance on full braking. A Causes Vomitting Transmission isn't appropriate in a "sport" model!

I'd really prefer the option to disable the "fake gear" thing. People complain about the "drone" but I personally got a kick out of how my last CVT would "drone."

To be fair, they also have a huge issue with these “expert mechanics” over exaggerating their failure rate to scare people and get views. While they’re not known for longevity and have had a fair share of documented issues in the past, A MASSIVE part of the issue is poor quality/complete lack of maintenance.

If they sold these with a stick in the US I’d have bought one. Instead I bought a Corolla SE. Surprisingly I don’t hate the CVT even if I would like a clutch.

I’m not a fan of fake shifts for CVTs but they still operate as designed. They will still pull consistently when accelerating. The fake shifts, in my opinion, is sort of a “drone tamer” in a sense.

fake shifts are because of ppl (incl. car reviews) that found the constant engine noise annoying. I guess you cant make everyone happy. But its clever, coz it moves just a tiny bit where the power does not really drop much. It oscilates at the peak power (after and before it).
