Why The Overlord SUCKS

The Overlord is the original Ninjago show's central antagonist, appearing in multiple seasons. Despite having this much screentime, I don't find him to be a compelling villain. Let's discuss why.

Although he’s amazing in Crystalized… I gotta admit that he was the only villain that I was genuinely dreading to see in Crystalized when the rumors of his return started. Sure we all know how Harumi was a mess, and I flat out hate Mister F, but the Overlord was the only one that I wasn’t happy to see at first. (And I still don’t like him, with or without Crystalized.)

Basic af Ninjago usually has more complex villains. We usually get more than "evil darkness lord" because "evil darkness man exists because darkness always exists cuz of light". And the worst part is that he keeps coming back and each time I care less and less

The overlord works in season 2 because it’s just a story about the hero’s journey and how Lloyd went from zero to hero and has to watch all his friends turn to evil to protect him knowing it’s just him left to defeat this ultimate bad guy. Also he corrupted his father, and he lost to him last time. He didn’t need to be anything more than he was. In season 3 it was ehhh, and then in Crystalized it was like, alright are we really still doing this?

I sort of agree but not fully. My reason is because during the final battle, there was already a perfect dynamic between Lloyd and Garmadon for a battle and it was built-up over the course of 1-and-a-half seasons. That to me robbed any emotional value from the fight in general.

I like to think that he was once the apprentice of the Omega, who was banished for trying to use Destruction through Creation, and forced to live in Ninjago. Where he lost his physical form, and so he tried to be far more powerful than his master could ever dream of.

I kinda liked his deception of harumi tbh it reminded me of how he played garmadon. The both of them were tools for him to use but I feel they should’ve committed all the way and have the overlord take over her body and if they did wanna do harumi’s redemption right she should’ve sacrificed herself ( agaain) in order to full get rid of the overlord.

Half disagree with the Devourer comment. It was really cool that the writers actually acknowledged the Papercutz comic's existence, and used that Devourer reveal for the show a decade later. Imo it makes sense that the Overlord was able to target Garmadon and ruin his entire life purely for his own benefit But they should've weaved in the reveal more naturally so Harumi could have an actual character arc throughout the season

I agree it's a cool reveal but it should have existed as like, a side dish to the long list of The Overlord's own crimes. We dont really have that though - that retcon is the only impact the Overlord really had on the story, making it not really enough to sell me on him as the central villain

Me personally I don’t even like the fact that overlord W’s brought back in season 3, when he fits as the perfect villian for lloyd fulfilling his role as the chosen one prophecy. Overlord being wiped out by lloyd and his father turning to his human self and not have inner conflict with his evil self anymore left a powerful message on season 2. Bringing him back literally the season after made it feel as if the overall message of season 2 meant nothing and they didn’t tso much with overlord’s character

About calamity Ganon he was mentioned as not being complete and STILL he destroyed the kingdom while in age of calamity yes he didn't kill anyone but he was WAY more powerful in my opinion what Made that Ganon scary was what he COULD do.

4:40 The overlord took Wu's brother, TFSM's oldest son, Lloyd's dad, Misako's husband, and Zane, from the protagonists (as well as from the audience, i guess). So, the overlord in Seasons two and three work really well. However, by crystallized they had all been redeemed/revived in some way. This decreases the overlord's credibility by a lot. However, it is safe to say that he caused a lot of long-term havoc in the history of Ninjago.

I think the idea of peace through darkness is basically making the zombies, that's why he did it in Crystalized and in S2, if everyone is a zombie that follow his orders, then there's no reason for conflict... That being said he just want to expand and conquer and destroy

I think the great devourer reveal works a lot better if you don’t think of the perspective of his technical body count, but instead through how his actions affected Garmadon. Because ever since the bite Garmadon’s whole life had basically been ruined, his relationship between his brother and father deteriorated, he lost the chance to grow with the one he loved, and he even eventually lost the chance to raise his own child, leading him to eventually succumb to the darkness that took everything from him. And that all happened, with the sole purpose of preparing Garmadon into the position just so eventually his body would be used to bridge the Overlord into the physical world in season 2. Whole centuries of planning and the manipulation of Ninjago’s most important family all just so he can use Garmadon as a meat puppet. I think from that angle the twist works very well.

Although in my version of this story he had just redeemed himself like Darth Vader to help defeat the overlord, then got killed while helping the ultra dragon take out the overlord in his crystal king form, allowimg lloyd to kill him. That way it wasn't as unfair as it would've been if garmadon had died in crystalized because he got to reunite with Lloyd before dying.

The best ninjago villains to me will always be Garmadon, Chen, Nadakan, Harumi and Pythor They all had memorable moments whilst on screen and genuinely were good villains that had either understandable motivations or were just completely ruthless

I would've ret-conned in crystalised that the overlord was the ruler of ninjago long before the fsm showed up. I would've made it so that he created wojira like he did with devourer so more evil could be spread across the land, and when the fsm showed up in ninjago, he saw it as the fsm taking his world away from him which is why he's been on this mission to plunge the world in darkness so he can take his home back

That kind of nerfs the fsm even more, it would show that the overlord will always be the big bad and have lasting consequences because the fsm needs a powerful nemesis but the idea of him creating realms doesn't sit well with me. Also I like the idea of Lloyd's oni form appearing in season 10 and it would give lloyd better control and conquering his fear, becoming like his father. They needed the overlord to be more interconnected to all Evils in ninjago and then bring him out in the season finale before dragons rising, like the Skull from the mountain and maybe even Aspeera idk it seems cool for him to be the source of all Evils. And him being an agent of the Oni makes more sense, I can't explain how he's a dragon but it would make him fsm most powerful adversary than the oni ever were which would make garmadon even more powerful I guess.

I think The Overlord is a cool villain, he just has lots of missed potential. I really like his designs and voice, but he never gets to do anything besides be intimidating. If he had motives, more personality, and got more involved with the plot and characters, I think he would be a good villain.

Crusty, you're forgetting one very important thing. The Overlord has done something really bad: he caused Crystalized. This had lasting consequences for quite some time, until Dragons Rising came along and undid his horrible deed. (damn you, good writing!) For that alone he's more evil than Garmadon and Harumi combined. Maybe the most evil character in fiction.

I actually do like the Overlord corrupting the devourer thing, as it makes it seem like after failing to defeat the FSM, he began to manipulate and groom Garmadon into being his perfect vessel. Plus that aspect of his character does add something to the overlord, he did end up taking something away from the heroes, he took away Garmadon’s chance at a life with his family, Lloyd had to grow up mostly without a father because of him, and then there’s the Harumi part which isn’t nearly as meaningful. I really like this idea, and I believe there was already a similar idea going around before this season where people suspected he made the devourer. However I agree without you in the sense this is too little too late. They pulled it out at the end of the season just as a last minute plot twist to get Harumi to betray him. Perhaps they could have made the reveal happen at basically any other point beforehand in the story, they could have even used it as motivation for Garmadon to face him as like I said, the overlord essentially ripped him away from his entire family just so he could be a pawn in his games. But the Overlord in Ninjago is always much smarter and intimidating while off screen when we don’t see him blabbering constantly.

The biggest problem is the Overlord feels underwhelming. He's an immortal being an the embodiment of evil, he's basically a god, however he doesn't do anything that shows he's any more evil or more powerful than any other Ninjago villain. They always tell us how evil and powerful the Overlord is but never show it. Whenever the Overlord appears it should feel like the Ninja are facing a God but instead the Overlord feels underwhelming compared to other Ninjago villains

If I could rewrite the overlord: His reason to destroy is simply cause it’s in his NATURE. The first spinjitzu master arrived in ninjago, helped Nyad slay wojira (possibly his creation) created new land and made everyone live in pretty much peace?? The overlord is the darkness to the light so obviously it will try to consume the light time and time again and therefore it hates anything the spinjitzu madter does. Also yes, absolutely. Make the overlord KILL. The overlord isn’t some cartoon villain, time and time again they say “embodiment of evil” YET NO MURDER?? I know this is a kids show but kids know what death is. We don’t have to kill the ninja but we can at least say he killed random civilians?? Like that would make us all root more for the ninja since they’re trying to save people.

2:08 There is a philosophical theory that the logical peak of peace, balance lack of chaos is nothingness. If the Overlord wanted to evaporate all of the 16 realms based on this believe and actually considered himself a good guy on this basis, it would've been both an interesting insight into his character and a remarkably deep thought for a kid show. The problem is that I can't imagine Bragi Schut being able to come up with something this complex, and the way the Overlord's motif is spelled in _Crystalized_ sounds half-baked and has little to nothing to do with his actions.

This is a good video. Really well put together. I will admit that the Overlord isn’t my favorite Ninjago villain, but I don’t think he’s completely awful. The series has done a great job with his strengths. He’s cunning and manipulative, he’s created several armies that gave the Ninja some trouble, he’s skilled in combat, and he even outsmarted the FSM during their battle. However it hasn’t done much with his character. I think 1 dimensional villains can work if written well. If they have an impact on other characters or played an important part in their story, then I’d say they succeeded. S2 Overlord works really well. He manipulates and possesses Garmadon, he corrupts a good chunk of Lloyd’s friends, he breaks Lloyd’s leg,and then corrupts Ninjago. This season perfectly shows how much of a threat the Overlord can be, and he wasn’t even close to his most powerful form. (Golden Master)

Plus he's better than every single villain in the Oni trilogy. Especially the dragon hunters. They did almost nothing and never had a clear goal that they had as a group. Plus they only were so powerful against the ninja because the writers said that's what needed to happen. Even the sons of garmadon and harumi only beat the ninja purely out of luck.

@@skylord1846 iron Baron annoyed me the most it's like the writers said. "Chen was a good character because he had no powers but used his intelligence to challenge the ninja, so let's give you a version of him that's severely downgraded and isn't remotely as entertaining as Chen". People didn't just like Chen because he was smart. He was the father of the main character's love interest, and we heard from him how his jealousy made him manipulative and evil. The iron Baron lacks any of that substance. He's just a dick for the sake of being a dick. Probably the worst joke of his when he said he hoped eating a wind dragon didn't "Blow". Like, that's high school freshman humor. Not something you want to hear from a grown man who's supposed to be scary. And what does the guy want to do other than hunt dragons? Imperium improved on this almost half a decade later, and as a result created a version of the iron Baron that was good, Beatrix. It was like the writers took the iron Baron and harumi, put them together, and made them good characters. The dragon hunters as a whole bother me because of how utterly stupid they are. Like, imperium wouldn't have been so intense in the show if every character was Rapton. That's how it was with the dragon hunters. I think the dragon hunter I hate most is chew toy. Like, he has a stupid name that makes me think of a dog's squeaky toy, and that's hardly threatening. And what's the deal with him? He seems to enjoy getting close to dragons and even getting hurt. Speaking of getting hurt, another thing that makes me feel weird is the way they "Tortured" Faith and the ninja. Like, it doesn't even torture them. It makes them look a bit weird. Also I know this is weird to say about a Lego show, but I feel like the writers had some 18+ implications in mind with the whole tickling scene. Like, I remember feeling uncomfortable watching it, and then someone explained why, and I kinda wished I didn't read that comment. 💀 I think the only positive things I could say about the dragon hunters is that they weren't in the show for as long, which was one of the only good things about the split storyline. Also they have great minifigures. I have the iron Baron and love him as a minifigure, just not a character. And Faith too is a pretty good minifigure.

I also agree with everything you said about the Iron Baron. Especially when he was torturing the Ninja in E8. While Iron Baron has a great Minifigure, his character is crap. Also the Iron BADron joke completely got me. 😂

Totally agree. The Overlord is so cool as a concept, an ever lasting and intimidating darkness which consumes everything and everyone, but he's just like Crystalized: he does nothing in the series, it just happens to sell the set, and Ninjago isn't just about that, but for some reason the creators often had lazy writings, convinced that what they got was enough for the series. I thank so much the new head writers for Dragons Rising, it made Ninjago reborn from the WildBrain era downgrade (but I do appreciate the actually good parts of it, I'm not throwing it away. It also gave Ninjago the best animation it ever had, which is way to much important for an action series... The Oni trilogy animation was unbearable in my opinion, really boring fights and cluncky movements)

I do wish he had more moments to shine. He’s definitely my favorite villain design and scenes throughout the series. But it would have been great if he got the Thanos Death from Puss in Boots treatment. Crystalized was the perfect opportunity to give him the character development he needed. Emperor garmadon is what the overlord should have been from the beginning. Instead of "evil wins" Emperor garmadon is like a husk or a puppet he's moving via instinct because that's all what was resurrected of him, he doesn't really believe that he's capable of change so he embraced his destructive nature which ultimately led to his defeat the moment his enemies stopped fueling his power, he thrives on conflict and considering conflict is everywhere at all times that means he's always omnipresent and can always come back as a result of this.

I mean it is so obvious Wu was *supposed* to die in Brave But Foolish but the writers had to write it out last-minute because something changed.. even though that might also have been too late, it would have at least been something yk? I will say I somewhat agree with u however I don’t expect much of personality from villians. Fact of the matters is majority of villians in general that’s written to be embodiment of evil tend to not have special personalities. But I do also think it doesn’t inherently excuse the bad writing of certain villians and the blandness such as the overlord years later. He doesn’t seem that threatening as he use to be, his characterization went downhill after season 2. I felt that at least season 2 did well with his character from the start. For such an iconic villian he’s so lackluster all around as a “all evil villian”. W video

Also palpetine is a more complexed villian and is more reasonable for his motivations in the world of Star Wars. I wouldn’t characterize him as the embodiment of evil. Hot take: The Crystal King is the best Ninjago character in Ninjago (second best to Dareth). Villains with little to no motivation and is just evil to be evil. That’s my favorite kind of villain. He has his own final plan not just “destroy the world” he’s evil and a menace that makes him a great character. That’s my main problem with Morro and Harumi, they aren’t real villains imo. The Overlord will kill if he needs to, while Morro and Harumi will struggle and probably won’t do it. I just like evil villains idk tho😁

I think it's a shame that they rejected the idea that the Overlord is the Oni side of the FSM, that would have made him much more interesting. that would have been so much better. and I think he should have killed Wu and maybe Garmadon in the final battle

For me the overlords done right is the Lich from adventure. Everything he does badly the Lich does right. Actually kills Billy, Kinda responsible for Fin losing his arm oh and the deaths of the majority of humanity and if I am remembering correctly in distant lands he is responsible for the destruction of old death and new death. He has multiple cool designs and his speeches slap. The only thing i guess is he doesn’t have any cool fights scenes but he isn’t really a fighter he is an evil sorcerer.

My problem is that I always want to see more to him than there actually is, because he is the spiritual successor to Bionicle's Makuta, who's my favorite villain of all time. Both are shapeshifters, both at some point dipped into the natural evil aspect, both possessed machinery and eventually they stole designs from another (Overlord Makuta 2016/ Crystal King centaur 2022). But Overlord holds back. Teridax killed a mentor figure, temporarily killed a main character's best friend, is responsible for the endtimes and a sacrifice that reverses it. And he does that all while essentially holding his very own checklist of world conquest. And the weird part is that it seems like they set the Overlord Great Devourer thing up for almost a decade without revealing it. The devourer eye color is one hint, the Devourer's blood awakening the stone warriors is another, and Greg Farshtey said that the story bible he based his 2012 comics on said that the snake was touched by a Great Evil. It was all there to make the Overlord the connection between all villains in Ninjago, like Makuta was the connection between almost all villains in Bionicle, but the Ninjago team waited so long with the revelation that it almost felt like a retcon at this point.

And Makuta HAS an actual character and motivations. Makuta's fueled by a massive inferiority complex, entitlement and just a pinch of justified anger. He feels underappreciated for him and his entire species doing a big chunk of the actual 'creating the universe' part, specifically creating a majority of the world's natural life, and nobody as far as we can tell ever paid them attention. But that's obviously blown IMMENSELY out of proportion in his response, which is ultimately to become the universe itself, and he will go to any lengths to achieve it. Even his weakest states are forces to be reckoned with - able to draw upon armies of Visorak or psychically control a seemingly unlimited number of victims. The Overlord in his awakened selves are certainly formidable, but it's clear most of the time, he's a manipulator villain out of necessity due to lacking physical strength and an army, not choice.

@@lozm4835 What i love about Makuta is that he's a shapeshifter very much in concept. Whenever he takes form in the story, he plays a vastly different role. In 2001 he's a force of nature, in 2003 he's a corrupted guardian, in 2004 he is an apocalyptic doombringer, in 2005 he's a ruthless warlord, in 2006 he's a literal essence of evil, in 2007 he's a false ally, in 2008 he is revealed to have been the ultimate the puppet player all along. It's also implied in the story that Makuta is guided by a sense of destiny that's been corrupted by his shadowy nature. Makuta was destined to become an equal to Mata Nui and join him in an effort to heal their home planet. And that predetermined destiny is what influences his choices. Although he doesn't know his destiny directly, he thinks of himself as a higher being, destined for absolute greatness. Pride combined with shadow is a really toxic combo. He steals Mata Nuis body and moves the fragments of the planet in a way that makes them much easier to reunite for Mata Nui. The fact that he did it to attack Mata Nui doesn't really matter on the cosmic side of things. Makuta's will is undermined by his destiny in the end. So while he is a character, he is driven by two very basic things: Destiny and the corruptive power of shadow. In that way he's not that different from the Overlord or Garmadon. (Edit: Well actually there is a difference. Makuta is destined to do good but does that in the worst way imaginable, without even the intention to actually do good, while Garmadon and the Overlord are destined to do evil. Maybe the Overlord actually needed a further variety of roles he could fill. He gets new powers every time, but his role remains largely unchanged through the run of the show.

I partially agree but I don't think pure evil villains are automatically bad sometimes a pure evil villain is fine. personally I think the overlord as a character is just okay I don't think ninjago should really use him again anymore though. unless they actually have some new interesting idea of what to do with him I think bringing him back again would be lame.

think one of the used idea was cool that he is the evil half of the first spinjizu master or something simular, personaly don´t like it that he made Garmadon evil, think he should have stayed dead (season 3 version was "perfect" and finished) and use a new original villain (hope he dosn´t return in crystelize, but would be interesting if their battle kinda take a part in the merge happening faster, or show finally up for 1 last time with like a cult as minons and is defeadet for real for ever and with no comming back)

Well if you still like rise of Skywalker somehow, you then it makes sense how he’s responsible for the Devourer aka he’s making her like Kylo ren was to Palpatine. Also Harumi wouldn’t even have a body count if she didn’t lose her parents and as another comment pointed out, that’s why she was resurrected and used as a tool. Again the elements used are not bad, it’s just how they were used because honestly on paper, Garmadon arc with a plant being essential sounds really awful. Anyways back to me watching an actual good finale of a show that usually has 11 minute runtimes aka Amphibia

To me, Overlord makes up his lack of motivation and characterization by design and just how iconic and powerful is he. Regarding the kill count, I don't really understand this. He is the literal source of the entire evil which makes him responsible of all the other villains existing in the first place: doesn't this make all of the villains' kill counts go to Overlord's one. Also, from what I remember, he doesn't want to actually destroy Ninjago or other Realms (that's to Omega), despite being able to, he just wants to corrupt everything under his rule of Evil and Darkness, which is why he only corrupts civillains and not actually kills them. This is also supported by the Serpentines' prophecy that "his destructive rule will change the face of the world, and he will not stop until every man, woman, and Serpentine are enslaved under his control."

I honestly think that Harumi has a similar issue to the Overlord regarding the whole “taking over Ninjago to bring peace” motivation (although it is still way better done than with the Overlord). The idea of her motivation is actually really cool, but the problem is that it is very rarely actually relevant. Most of her scenes are focused on getting revenge on Lloyd rather than wanting to save Ninjago, all of Lloyd’s trauma is based on the trust issues that he got from Harumi, but he doesn’t care about Harumi’s motivation at all, and we don’t even know if the other ninjas know what Harumi’s motivation is. I still think that Harumi is one of the best villains (ignoring S15) for the reasons you mentioned in the video. The fact that she is only villain of the show that left an impact on one of the heros for multiple seasons, and that she is the only villain who is just a normal person with no magical powers makes her feel like much more “personal” villain than all of the others.

I think he's a bad villain despite his fantastic design. I just wanna see him atleast be taken seriously for once. The overlord being a villain isn't the reason why all the seasons he's in are bad though, it's the messy plot/writting like the love triangle and the bad crystalized writing decision making and the messy LOTGN plot that have to do with other characters on it. Overlord should ATLEAST have done something by himself, not having him cause the corruption of the deveourer and as a result being indirectly responsible for all the attrocities in ninjago. like the chen and garmadon stuff because garmadon with bitten by the devourer, or all the things that resulted in S1-S7 stuff, or harumi killing several people including her adoptive parents. No, it doesn't work like that, I wish he had ATLEAST done, like, something by himself, like kill people, or take something from the main characters from them DIRECTLY WITH HIS OWN RESPONSIBILITY. "Too little too late" sums up the Overlord pretty good. I actually think he wouldn't seem that bad if Ninjago didn't have so many better villains who outclass him in any Villain trait. The Oni were scarier than him. Nadakhan and Kalmaar were crueler. Chen and Morro were more entertaining. Most villains had engaging dynamics with at least one Ninja, but again, not enough is given to the Overlord. At most, he has the fight with Wu, where he kinda retreads his rivalry with the First Spinjitzu Master. But then it's all glossed over in favor of him just gloating over Lloyd and Garmadon.
