In Buddhism, they make a distinction between pain and suffering. I believe pain comes from feelings while suffering comes from thoughts. If you can accept and feel into your emotions with compassion for them, you can learn from pain. If you get better at spotting negative thoughts before they become worse and figure out ways to shift them into positive thoughts, you can avoid suffering

@@48lawsofpeace our thoughts always subconsciously loop, this can be observed but most often is not. What you focus on and keep thinking turns from a thought into fact depending on how chronically you persist in the way of thinking you desire to express itself in your reality.

My self-worth was also entirely centered on my academic success in school. Yet it no longer makes me fulfilled as it used to. Currently 3.95 gpa in junior year of college to put in perspective. I threw away my need to socialize ever since the start of high school. I rarely work on any relationships and as a result I didn’t realize how many flaws I have as a person until I got heartbroken recently. I really wish I made an effort on myself than just school work years earlier.
I also remember hearing about a study on placebo effect: one group was given something harmless but were told it was something they are allergic to and they genuinely had an allergic reaction (desptite not coming into contact with an allergen). Its insane, if I find the study I'll post in the reply. Just makes you think about how your thoughts can literally poison you.
@Julian_Stories7 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Yea I heard of that experiment, I'm sure it's mentioned in a few places but I first heard about it in a book called "Influencer". In that book, it talks about an experiment where there was one group that was allergic to poison ivy. And the experimenters blind-folded that group, and touched their leg with a normal leaf, but told the group that it was poison ivy... and they had an allergic reaction. So it's pretty crazy

Something I've realized in life is that it's easy for us to to trick ourselves into believing things are or will be worse than they necessarily have to be. Like if there's something you're about to do that you're dreading like getting a shot, doing a chore, etc., then after it's over, someone might ask "was that so bad?" focusing too much on how much you're not going to like it probably makes it seem worse than it really is, but it's an easy trap to fall into.

Nice video mate. I’ve thought about this before. The first step of all this is being aware of your own emotions and to have the ability to see your issues from outside perspective similar like what you said. I also find giving myself advice as if I’m giving it to someone else but with the same issue helps too. Also saying about pretending to smile can help too, I read somewhere that if you spend 5 mins pretending to be happy it can trick your brain into actually being happy.

Yea it's difficult. This reminds me, I recently read something called Solomons paradox, which states that we are better at giving advice than taking it. So I'm trying every day to actively improve and actually internalise the advice!

3 best quotes from this video: Inject positive thoughts into your mind from a third person perspective. Emotions are programmable. You can basically choose what emotion you want to feel right now. Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts.

hey there julian, i read your story, it seems like the toughest part is already behind you, maybe you disagree, i'll tell you why i think that is the case, you probably were struggling with self worth when you first failed school and this motivated you to work the hardest you could which lead to your great achievement, which should have been enough to boost your self esteem, i'm not sure if it did though, i wrote that cause it felt like i went through something very similar, i'm 27 years old, but i did go through with it i graduated med school about 3 years ago and i'm a pediatrics resident, i'm still struggling, but i know my current situation is less stressful and depressing than it used to be before i went to med school, my struggles with self worth are improving slowly
@Julian_Stories2 күн бұрын
Hey, thank you so much for sharing this with me and for taking the time to read my story. Your insight about the self-worth struggles really hits home. It's really inspiring to hear about your journey through med school and now as a pediatrics resident. You make an interesting point about the toughest part being behind me. I would definitely agree that I don't have a major self-image crisis anymore, but it's still a gradual work in progress. The good news is I do feel like a lot of challenges now are less to do with self-esteem :) Overall, hearing that you've seen gradual improvement in your own struggles gives me hope! I appreciate it and wish you all the best with the rest of your training.
