Today courtesy of Porsche UK I have the pleasure of sampling two cars in their current lineup. I'm not in love with the 992, so I asked for a pair of Porkers which were not 911s. We begin with this, the very long named Cayenne Coupe Turbo S E-Hybrid. What's it like?

All the complaining about the boot space... on a coupe hybrid?? The people buying them already know that the coupe has a smaller boot than the normal version and that most hybrid tech means losing some space in the boot.

I disagree, here's why. Big 2 "parking priority" and "HOV Lane access" Business owner tax deductions. Currently, US business owner's who purchase a hybrid, +6000 GVWR vehicle can not only get a 100% tax depreciation on the vehicle but a bonus as well. Now for this SUV you can only max out up to $25k but with Federal & State tax incentives you get additional deductions and if you buy it brand new you'll get 50% bonus depreciation. There's some other deduction you can take on regarding the hybrid system. So instead of paying for a brand new $85k Porsche Cayenne Hybrid they may only pay $30k-$50k depending on options. They're buying it as a performance family hauler that has dual purpose for winter performance driving and over high waters. I stay in Annapolis, MD and we have high tides all the time off the East Coast. Many owners have weekend high performance cars they put away for winter. As much as I dislike SUV's they do provide a utility that an Estate car cannot and many prefer not to purchase a truck b/c a wagon is more practical for mundane family usage around town. There's no shortage of Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover and Porsche SUVs around town especially considering most residents own boats, yatchs, or some sort of water craft. Something like this is easier to maneuver around town on the small side streets, parking lots, back roads and gated communities. Personally I've only required a 4x4 for one occasion which was a steep icy hill that had I not used 4L, I'd slide back down like all the other cars. With in car Navigation I've been able to reroute myself incase of road closures, high water or downed trees. But saying it's for those very few minute things I think is invalid, b/c this truck has the same capacity as a Mini, Kia Soul, or other small SUVs but sits higher and out performs most sports cars or anything on the road in bad conditions. The #1 (I'll list these 2 atop) reason I can think of is a hybrid while less practical actually has an advantage I never hear spoken online. That's "parking priority" and "HOV Lane access". You get to park upfront next to handicap spaces if they have charger's. You get priority parking in parking garages at apartments or city area's. Priority parking at parks, amusement parks, and national parks. You get a HOV lane and don't require a passenger so you save way more time in a hybrid if it's how you commute to work especially if you used it to drop off your kids at school and have to drive from Annapolis to D.C. which takes 1hr in rush hour traffic without the HOV lane. Obviously you shouldn't speed but 9 out of 10 times you can get away with pushing 80-90mph cutting your time from 60min to 25min and vice versa coming back home and having to do it again. 120min vs 50min is a big deal when you add that over 1wk, 1mo, 1yr or 10yrs, that's a lot of time better used than sitting in traffic being no use to anyone. I don't know about anyone else but 250min vs 600min in a week is massive. 28,800min being cut by more than half is huge. So my big 3 is Time, HOV access, and Priority Parking. Even parking you save time vs having to park far away they give you a spot only other hybrids or EVs can access. Imagine being an older man or woman but not quite a senior with children and a full time corporate job working on the East Coast or all 4 Season area with high population. Just think how quickly you can get to an Airport if there's an accident on the road and the HOV lane is open. Personally for me I'd not get the panaramic roof, sun roof or carbon roof and instead would option a roof rack and trailer hitch. Porsche's are known for being one of the best trailer vehicles due to it's smooth ride and handling. Add a roof rack and now you can haul ass to a airport, ski resort or summer vacation and not sit in a bunch of traffic with a 50% discount + whatever you negotiated and have Porsche reliability and performance and value (low depreciation).
@dct124
@dct124 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewfrancis3591 nah, there's many things this vehicle has going for it beyond a sedan or estate and I don't like SUVs but in the US they're hot because, of cost savings, time savings, privilege, reliability, performance, ride height and value that does actually exceed a sedan or estate by a wide margin. Now vehicle for vehicle an SUV just has ride height and towing capacity. You start adding HOV lane, parking, tax breaks, tax deductions, high safety (aside from rollovers), then it starts to make sense, when you can save some 30,000hrs of your life per year from traffic. $30,000 or more in savings. Even more saved on maintenance compared to even the Toureg, Q8 and other competetors aside from Lexus and Toyota which I personally prefer the styling and performance of the Ceyanne to a RX, GX or RAV4 🤷🏾‍♂️ once you factor in business you can get the Ceyanne for the price of a RAV4 or GX and have the same reliability.

In reality this video does zero harm to Porsche it wouldn't even show up on their radar, their order books are full and they are happy to lend the press cars out and not to be seen in the same light as Mclaren for example getting upset if one person says something negative about one of their products.

As an owner of a Cayenne Coupe Turbo S E-Hybrid, I very much agree with many of the points you make. Unfortunately, like most other "practical" porsches, having the right spec really does make a difference. Without the lightweight package, for example, the car really does feel far more luxurious than in the spec you reviewed. Likewise, qualms with the boot space and rather limited electric-only range makes me think that in hindsight, after a year of living with the Cayenne, I might well have been better off with buying a BMW X5 45e and a Boxter GTS 4.0 instead of a fully-specced out Cayenne. That being said, it's a Porsche and really does feel like a proper beast, and fuel economy (when the battery is fully charged) is a decent 10L/100km on a mixed day of city and motorway driving. Oh well, I'll make a more informed decision when it's finally safe to go full (non-Tesla) EV.

I strongly disagree with your point about the boot: The Cayenne coupe boot is a generous 600 litres - this is only 50 litres less than the X5 and 90 litres less than the regular GLE... quite a modest disadvantage for a much sleeker looking car! The only reason why the Cayenne coupe boot seems smaller is that the regular Cayenne and its mechanical twin the Q7 have gigantic boots of 750 litres which are by far the largest in class. So put differently, yes the Cayenne coupe is substantially less practical than the regular Cayenne, but not much less practical than key competitors (that are much clumsier looking)

Great review and couldn’t agree more. SUVs should be big and practice and this fails on the latter. It could be argued that the old (non coupe) Cayenne Diesel had a greater purity of purpose. This seems like a niche too far and it’s incredible to think there must a sizeable market for Porsche to make them. It has the same useable space as a Panamera by the looks of it. Looking forward to the Taycan review 🙂

Very odd fault finding, when both main criticisms are easily overcome by choosing another interior (goodness knows there are lots), and the normal Cayenne body instead of the coupe.

Honest test. I hope the guys at Porsche actually watch the whole vid (I thought you were really going to slay it). I’m in the market for a sporty SUV and was a bit shocked to see that when you scratch below the fuel economy figure of the Panamera hybrid (generalising with the Cayenne power plant) the fuel economy is very bad. In short, they only make sense on an eco credential if you charge them overnight every night and drive not much more than the electric range...

James, these cars are sorta tax loophole in the nordics. They have all the bang of a performance model (which gets taxed over 100% of their value in here). BUT theyre also the green jeesus with the batteries in them which grants them lower tax rate so that the hybrid which is essentially the performance model PLUS some electric boogaloo cuts up the listing price in almost half of what it would be without hybrid system. There is place for them and that is to make the average greenpeace hippie not scowl at someone driving these.

So it’s basically to tick a box, frig the emissions figures and appeal to director level company car drivers? And those seats are horrendous, but no doubt you can specify full leather for about £5k (for basically the seat backs and base). And is it me or does the car sound like the exhausts are blowing rather than having a deep, bass V8 boom?

Not all countries have nice smooth roads. You'd be appalled at how bad roads are in southern Italy for instance. Only an SUV makes sense here and indeed nobody buys a 911 as it would be suicide.

Not a pretty thing, also that wing is really just a gimmick - you're never going to race it on a track nor drive it on a public road for it to have any real effect. It's got me beat as to why manufacturers create these 4wd behemoths and pass them off as "sports" vehicles. Want to go serious off roading - buy a landcruiser, want a spacious car that goes fast - buy an Audi RS Avant.
