I think a lot of people originally buy an SKX to use as a beater, then grow to love it so much, it rises up the ranks in their collections, and is more of a show piece....That,s how I grew to love my 009 and 007........Incidentally, I own a rather substantial Diver,s Watch collection, including pieces with high end Swiss and Japanese Movements......But my 007, when on wrist, shames the vast majority of them for accuracy......Which, when you consider it,s price a few years ago when I purchased it, put,s a smile on my face every time I strap it on......A true icon, and much loved mechanical time telling legend ;)

The SKX is a lovely watch. Had one for a couple of years which was used as a beater. It stalled on me twice - the first time, I sent it in for repairs. The second time it woke up again. Basic demolition work and wood chopping was more than it could take. So - not to be recommended as a beater, if that is your definition of a tough watch. I still recommend the watch. Best regards to all.

I use my SKX007 for my daily beater, and in that it looks great when I'm at work, out on errands, or in use in the water. I have 3 G-Shocks, and they are all tough as nails and simply ridiculous to wear as anything but a full-beater watch meant to take punishment and keep going. I would take my SKX over any of my G-Shocks without question.

I suppose it depends on how you view a "beater" watch. From my perspective, WHICH IS NOT LIMITED TO MECHANICAL WATCHES, and is strong on value, there are choices that make more sense as a decent beater than the SKX. The Casio DW-5600 G-Shock is rated 200m WR and is about 1/4 to1/5 the price of an SKX, and is practically indestructable. The Casio MDV-106 "Duro" is also a 200m rated diver, stainless steel, screw-down crown, screw-down back, classic looks, and currently sells for average 1/5 the price of an SKX. The QC is such that the vast majority of Duros, in contrast to many SKXs, have bezels that line up properly, and a second hand that hits the minute markers of the chapter ring dead-on. Vostok Amphibas are robust, capable, durable, and have a unique, dynamic 200m WR design, sell for about 1/3 what an SKX does. I would even offer up Orient Ray II and Mako II as approximate equivalent alternates to the SKX, but less expensive, and with superior movements and bezels. It's not that I think that the SKX is a "bad" watch; it's just that, for me, I see better choices as a daily wear or "beater". Thank you for a well-presented video.

@@watchgecko I think about where the watch industry is going in general. I see more and more young people (let's say, under 30) either A)wearing no watch...using the phone for time or B)wearing an Apple or other smartwatch, or a sports pedometer watch (FitBit, Garmin, etc) but very few "traditional" watches. One good thing about a"beater" watch being Mechanical is that the idea of "it will always power itself" and it doesn't require any battery which I feel more secure, for an extreme field survival situation, it's good to know that your watch will always be ticking as long as it's on your wrist, not some rugged looking quartz watch that has a crappy battery inside dies on you anytime possible

This is an excellent overview of the Seiko SKX, a watch that has achieved cult status in the watch enthusiast community. One positive point I don't believe was mentioned, and that is the fantastic Seiko Lumibrite luminous paint -- it really glows exceptionally well. On the negative side (I own both an SKX007 and a 009) is the the non-hacking, non-hand-winding 7S26 automatic movement. Neither of my SKXes are particularly accurate, running 30 to 45 seconds fast a day, but I understand that getting an accurate one out of the box is mostly luck of the draw. They can be regulated by a watchmaker, of course, and settle into reasonable timekeeping for many years without a service. I do wish that Seiko will release an upgraded version of the SKX with their hacking and hand-winding 4S36 movement instead. Lastly, quality control has been an issue with Seiko lately in regards to misalignment of the chapter ring. Both of my watches have misaligned chapter rings and despite continuous complaints back to Seiko management from dealers and owners alike, there doesn't seem to be any improvement. Still, an ISO-certified diver watch for a very affordable price that has gained an enviable reputation for ruggedness, reliability, and versatility cannot be ignored. Well done review, gentlemen!

I tried on NATOs, and I do prefer the old cheap original rubber strap.... don't know why.... I mean, SKX its a divers instrument, the rubber strap combines perfectly with it and looks way better... Must say, for a special occasions, instead of NATOs, I recommend a good high end leather strap, and just that.

Great review. I’ve have one of these beauties, on a jubilee. Slightly retro, and great daily wear. Original rubber strap is not good - too rigid/cheap. Seiko does some great supple rubber straps higher up their range, but this one is not good. In terms of alternatives, per the video, it looks great on a NATO. Also, bezel action and grip are not great. Again, the slightly more expensive Seiko divers have *much* nicer bezels (for example, the bezel action on the baby golden tuna is super satisfying). But for the money, this is such a good watch. Long termer for me. 👍🏻

Owing the black faced version, but also owning the Citizen BN0151 eco-drive in a blue face, and Casio G-Shock GW-6900 solar atomic.... I honestly believe this watch doesn't hold a candle in a "beater watch" perspective. Both watches mentioned above you install on wrist and go. You don't shake your wrist to kickstart the watch, you don't set the time/date, you only put it on and go...and both watches are far more accurate than the SKX. I love automatics, but honestly, unless you keep it on a winder, or have hand winding and hacking to set the correct time, you're only getting an "estimation" of what time it is.......from what's suppose to be considered a "precision timepiece". That Casio multi-band 6.....no that's a precision time piece, and the the BN0151 is everything the SKX is outside the mods but more accurate and less fuss. Now I am only referring to a beater watch or everyday watch. Every other situation, the SKX is equal or wins. Now this could be taken as subjective, but the time keeping accuracy is not. Another aspect that is not is the price list to have the Seiko serviced. Unless the watch holds personal sentimental value, its a throw-away watch because it costs just as much or more to service as it costs for a brand new one...which you cannot do if you mod it. It literally costs as much as the watch, so why wouldn't you just buy a new one...pristine, no scratches and not have to deal with the wait time and shipping? It sucks that we live in a planned obsolescence world but that is the reality..... You might as well settle for a cheaper more reliable watch for a beater/everyday watch, and save your money for something nicer.....just my opinion though. I have a SKX, I like it, I wear it in a rotation, but sorry not my "beater" watch. The watch is dormant more than it's active.

My SKX was purchased for $180 from Long Island Watch and it was my first nice mechanical watch. It is ISO certification, 200m, screw down crown, has a beautiful engraved case back with The Great Wave of Kanagawa. Newer 5kx replaces that special case back with a piece of glass. I also love the jingly jangle super comfy bracelet that has made the skx loved by so many collectors. As to the 7s26 movement. So the newer ones hacks. Why would you ever need hacking on a highly inaccurate movement? Hate to break it to you but neither the 4R series nor 7S26 are accurate movements. So hacking is a moot point. Then there is the lack of hard winding feature of the movement. Do you feel that having to wind the movement 30 times is faster than shaking the watch 3 times to get the 7S26 movement with the “magic lever” started is easier ? Yes the newer watches may be prettier but so much has been lost.

I don't know if I would consider this a beater. I don't even really like the term. If you were talking work watch or watch that can take some serious abuse, then the G-Shock DW5600E-1V is the absolute best watch. If you were talking about a daily wearer, than for me it's the Orient Ray II Raven. I hardly ever wear my SKX009. I'm too afraid of damaging it. This might not make sense to all but i have an SKX007J, and it is an absolute beauty! IMHO i would get the SRP777 ( turtle ) as a beater because of the usability with its hacking and hand winding and its more robust look for a bit more money over the SKX. The SKX is just looks like a million bucks and as it is discontinued, i just dont want to scratch or ding the watch up. In that respect, i wouldn't mind beating the turtle a bit due to it being more robust looking than the SKX and the turtle ( believe it or not ) looks badass with a few battle scars as its surface is mostly a brushed finish. Going outside the Seiko fam id pick up a Casio Duro as the ideal beater because it just gives that premium look and quality for 50 USD!! And it looks like a vintage submariner.

I just can't the watch bug and really want to add this as my only diver. Do you think it's still worth it for today's price of about $220 USD?
@whatsthebigfndeal5 жыл бұрын
I might not be the best judge on having only one diver, as I have several, but you can get an Orient Mako or Ray for 80-90 bucks less and they're very comparable to the skx and less likely to have QC issues. You really can't go wrong with either choice, though. I love my 009 as much as any watch I've got. It's a bit outdated (due to the 7s26 movement) and maybe a bit overpriced for what it is but it's just a cool watch. You won't regret buying one.

@@whatsthebigfndeal I appreciate your reply! I ended up thinking about it for 2 weeks straight after I wrote this comment and but the 009...no regrets!!!

This is a great beater and all, but there's no denying that a g-shock is the best beater someone can ask for

Why some have dark blue dial with darker blue Pepsi bezel and some have a lighter blue dial and lighter blue bezel??

Best diver beater automatic watch right now in the market is the Orient Ray II - great movement, good lume, more versatile. I have both and I treat my Seiko as the foundation of my collection because it has its own look, character and it’s been robust for 23 years. Great review, subscribed now!

Not sure why the word , beater, is used when describing this seiko watches. The watch comes with a damn good 7s26 movement. And when upgraded to a nh36. This watch is just as good as any other watch.

Excellent in-depth of SKXJ1. I'm glad to hear someone appreciate the SKXJ1 (007 or 009) as a go to watch. True, the Casio "Digital" watches can be use as the go to and dive watch. But, for those who do not need to many dials and functions in digital, just for weekend outing or swimming, the SKXJ1 with awesome lume really is a good quality time-piece.

I just ordered one SKX009J1, that's a nice Rolex, it's my favorite model, they shouldn't have changed it so much.

That is a special SKX made in Japan. Most SKX on the market are made in Seiko factories in other countries, as is mine.

sorry to say but skx is not a beater for me...I purchased my about a decade ago and paid about $169 but that's a lot of money for me....I used to wear $40-60 swiss army watches which was great when I had it but this SKX007k I have now is awesome! Keeps great time and is so rugged..I use it for everything and there's hardly any wear on it....still looks pretty new.

If Jesus wore a watch , this would be it . As a retired diver from the Cuban navy , that is the best dive watch I have ever seen . As a dive watch , the SKX is way better than the sub and the SHC015 ( the quartz version ) was even better than the SKX .

Joemari Garay I believe the Samurai hacks & handwinds, which I find preferable. However, the Sammy duznt have the SKX’s iconic status, from what I can tell, after my relatively brief 2-yr time as a watch enthusiast. I know ppl with super luxury watches often also own & love their skx’s.
