The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the auto industry's longest lasting and most widely-known brands. Land Cruisers have been in continuous production since the 1950s. It was also one of the first vehicles Toyota imported to the United States, establishing the reputation that turned Toyota into one of the best-selling brands in America. But in 2019, the Land Cruiser seems to be disappearing from the United States, attracting one-fifth of the buyers who bought at the peak of its appeal.

@@Constax Toyota USA corporate is a bunch of morons. They're the ones who make decisions on what the market in the USA receives, not based on what demand actually is. Their strategy is largely reactive. When they "foresee" market demand for a specific segment, they present offerings that might have been relevant a decade prior. It's similar to steering a large boat away from an iceberg too late. If they put more money into advertising the Land Cruiser and selling the models that Americans wanted, it would be very successful. But by deliberately showing poor sales of that vehicle, they can justify to Toyota Japan that they don't have to sell it here in the USA because it doesn't make sense and is a waste of money. At the same time, the Land Cruiser has moved into a luxury segment far off from the original design that made it so successful. I would say the FJ60 was probably the last Land Cruiser that had its original roots in mind. Starting with the FJ80, it became a luxury vehicle, and even then it was only $39,500 USD MSRP. In today's money, that's around $67,000 USD. Starting with the FJ100, prices skyrocketed and the conversion to Independent Front Suspension from the original solid axle design, it lost its heritage.

Here in Australia the 200 series has a basic model called the GX. It has barn doors at the back and vinyl floor coverings. The other models are the GXL, the VX and the top of the range, the Sahara. It is the very popular with the Grey Nomad set where it is used to tow their caravans around the country. Outside the big cities the 200 Series are everywhere. The other big plus for us is we get the diesel twin turbo version. The petrol version has just bee discontinued. It was selling at less than 1%.

It’s not a cost issue, is a soul issue. The new Land Cruiser has no soul and is only a Land Cruiser by name only. On the other hand other Countries get a different Land Cruiser and sell over 200,000 units world wide. A 79 series Land Cruise costs $71,000. It’s because it’s a capable vehicle that is a real Land Cruiser. Land Cruiser could charge whatever they wanted if they simply delivered what Land Cruiser fans really wanted. Toyota is just to arrogant to see it.

Michael Ives, a specced up model can be over 130k aud but we are more lacking in choice in Australia, plus the land cruiser has a solid reputation here. For a long time if you broke down in the bush, especially in the NT it was one of the few models that mechanics kept parts stocked for, so you could be on your way over night. This made them nearly essential alongside the Toyota hilux (our Toyota branded light truck) in the outback as one of the few reliable and short wait reparable vehicles in places where parts can take weeks to arrive. I went on a family trip and our Mitsubishi Pajero broke down, stuck in the desert for two weeks, landcruiser would’ve been fixed in a couple of days - hence the sales volume here

You should modify the Ground Clearance score so its more linear, something like 1pt for every 1" of clearance above 5". Or something like that. Same with Approach/Departure angles -- 1pt for every 3deg. That would be more fair of a playing field, because the difference between a vehicle with 8" clearance vs 9" clearance is very small, yet your index would reflect a significant difference.

Legendary Reliability. Guys we still have those first exported batch 1950's model land cruisers running in good consition in himalayas and karakorum ranges of Pakistan. And those unpaved roads are so dangerous that no other vehicle can run on them for more than 5 years.

1957 - A 4-door Station Wagon was introduced as the FJ35V on a 2,650 mm (104.3 in) wheelbase. Also in this year, Land Cruisers were first introduced to Australia by B&D Motors as FJ25/28 cab chassis with bodies made in the country marking these as the first Japanese cars to be exported to the country.

Sadly, most ppl won't realize they missed out on 1 of the GREATEST vehicles on this planet. It's not for everyone, but it is for a person who isn't looking for the latest, but the GREATEST. At 1 point across my road trip, I drove for 16hrs straight, she didn't even flinch once.

For your information, people of my generation couldn't afford $85k cars either in the main. However if I had that sort of money to waste, I wouldn't be spending it on a Land Cruiser.

That really is it, yeah. Land Cruisers are designed to have a 25 year operational lifespan. That's easily double to triple what most competitor vehicles are intended to last.

The $85,000 price tag and the fact that it was last fully redesigned in 2007 make it an extremely tough sell. The Toyota Sequoia suffers from the same problems.

I'm a used car dealer. We've had online bidding at the auto auctions for over 10 years. All the out of country car dealers buy them up online and export them to their countries. It drives up the used prices here in the US.

When they only sell one trim level of the LandCruiser in the States at 85K, of course you’re not going to sell a lot! I bet if they had an SR5 version like the 4Runner in the 60K range they would sell a ton more!!

$60g would be a ridiculous price point for an “sr5” optioned LC. They’re already dated by modern standards. Their redeeming value is their reliability, not their options. But if you look at the way Toyota markets and sells their vehicles, you HAVE to get a higher end version if you want ANYTHING. Take the Tacoma. If you want anything cool you HAVE to get a TRD truck. Otherwise you don’t get anything, not even atrac. So I say all that to say if there was an sr5 optioned LC, it would be stripped to nothing and really wouldn’t be an enjoyable vehicle to have other than its bulletproof reliability. You’d pay $60g for a vehicle that would be reminiscent of a 1990’s SUV.

Here in Aus its different, we dont have 4 runners , only Hailuxs and they run the same coin as a bloody 70 a lot of the time! One mate paid 71k for his last Hailux, my vdj76 was only 62! If you look here at used values, a 5 year old hailux can be had for %50 its new price, NO CHANCE LANDCRUISER unless its flogged EX MINE for 50% new 5 years old, mines 5years old and insured for 64k!! SO its actually CHEAPER to have the cruiser because deprecation is less and they are much nicer to drive int he diesels because not so many gear changes required. I regualry drive Hailuxs as well so am very familiar with them both on and offroad, on road they do eat a 70 (aside from actually having to use the gears) but offroad its seriously not even a discussion whats better, the 70 is far far more competent, stable, much better geared with much much more engine braking! Often i MUST accelerate down hills the Hailuxs brake for...

I’m surprised that the LC200 in US has fewer options like one Engine 5.7 and transmission and the other parts of the world have multiple choices like 5.7 V8, 4.6 V8, 4.0 V6 gasoline and 4.5 V8 diesel,6-9 speeds Auto OR 5 speeds manual , cloth or leather interior with multiple colors to choose from and cooler boxes , spare tire mounted on the back underneath as well
