The pay is not, in fact, high. It’s so low that the workers live without heat or running water, in leaky 50 years old trailers with no utility hookups that these “farmers” (millionaire land investors who never lift a finger) hide on back areas of land far from the main road. Why do you think we keep getting e coli scandals with the produce? Because the farm workers don’t have anywhere to go to the bathroom. These millionaires get a sick kick out of lording it over people of a different culture, keeping them like medieval serfs or old south slaves. They give them unnecessarily short-handed tools to keep them bent over. They illegally spray chemicals with the workers right there, and no PPE is provided even to the workers who handle the chemicals directly. Americans all over this country get up at three or five o’clock to do all sorts of demanding jobs. But other industries don’t have the special deal agriculture has received where the government looks the other way and all the labor protections we otherwise have in this country just don’t apply to them somehow. When the guy said “even if I paid them $26” it doesn’t mean he pays anywhere near that. It’s probably closer to $6. And the fact that Americans won’t accept these conditions is used to defame our working class and our country as a whole. Don’t fall for it. Listen to what they’re really telling you: they think you’re uppity and out of line for wanting a safe workplace and warm clean place for your children to sleep at night, and their ideal country is one where only they, the rich, enjoy basic amenities. In their ideal world you would no longer have the ability to live better than a desperate migrant no matter how hard you work.

In 2007, the 1st year he did it, he was paid 15 dollars per bin, he got paid 17 dollars per bin in 2011, then left for college when the season for that apple variety was over. Consider that most of the people who work these jobs in California are immigrants, and most do not speak English. These people are very hard workers. They’ve been working in our agricultural industries for almost one hundred years. Because of them California is top greatest economy in the world. They’ve built their own communities around their work. Which is normal. But because of language and cultural difference most of us were not usually hired. And the tradition has persist. How long does the paperboy remain a paperboy? Or picking crops in this case. One of the most important aspects of this type of farming is professional, knowledgeable workers. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could kill the watermelon plant and no more watermelons. Plus there’s a way of handling them that is also necessary to know. When you throw a watermelon into a catcher, the catcher has to stack the watermelon. If the watermelon is stacked incorrectly, it’ll crush the melons beneath. Therefore, he needs to be a skilled individual on knowing exactly how to turn and place the watermelon so that you can stack them high. How do I know that? I was brought up in the family where, by example, you worked hard, and you did what you needed to do. There was a very low point when I was homeless. I also have agricultural background, by always having a vegetable garden, and a grandmother who was a horticulturist. I did this type of work alongside Margaret workers. Who gave us a job, expecting that we’d be gone by the end of the day. We were not, we worked through the rain, the heat, the bugs, the rats, the snakes, the thorns, and all the other delightful conditions of doing agricultural Margarett work. All his life from the time he was a child he was a farmer, and his father was a farmer, we were the first….. the very first, white Americans that have been hired and stayed, plus we knew how to handle the tools and the product properly……. Think about that! In somewhere between 50 and 100 years, my husband and I were the first…. 1st to do the work, not complain, not kill the plants, and actually do the work. LISTEN TO THESE MEN. THEY’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. DO YOU THINK I WOULD STAY DOING THAT WORK ONCE WE HAD ENOUGH MONEY WHERE WE COULD GET MORE SETTLED AND MOVE ON. YOU’D BE CRAZY. I CAN DO IT, I DID IT, BECAUSE I HAVE AN EXCEPTIONAL BACKBONE. I DIDN’T KNOW IT AT THE TIME, BUT I’VE LEARNED SINCE. I’M 77 YEARS OLD. I BET I COULD DO IT NOW IF I HAD TO. THE PAIN WOULD BE HORRIFIC. BUT I KNOW THE CONDITIONS, I KNOW THE SUFFERING OF EVERY DAY OF BEING OUT IN THOSE FIELDS. IT IS NO WALK IN THE PARK.
