It was designed to stop extragalactic threats from either leaving or entering. Of course their was a loophole in this plan because in case the main galaxy, Sky River, was too damaged to further support future life its inhabitants could escape. The only problem with this design plan is that unless a civilization is highly advanced or behind, the travel time between the extragalactic void will very well kill you and several generations after that before you ever see the lights of another galaxy. Such was the fate of the Yuuzhan Vong leaving their satellite galaxy only to go mad from grief and the millennia traveling the endless black void. Another problem with this galactic design is that this doesn't stop extradimensional beings from plopping in and out of the galaxies and full blown universe ! A lot of eldritch horrors in the past exposed this flaw and we're able to spread evil and destruction to the galaxies around them as well...

Not likely. Class 1 hyperdrives, the fastest standardized ones available, are capable of at least 1,000,000 times the speed of light. Moving at that speed, a colony ship could get to the Andromeda galaxy in two years from the Milky Way. Even if other galaxies are farther from the Star Wars galaxy, it wouldn’t be far enough that a scientific probe couldn’t get there. So there has to be some other reason.
@ryanpennington95922 жыл бұрын
@JL Not really. Black holes are, of course, but the only wormhole-like thing I can remember are a pair of hoops belonging to a kind of circus performer or something. The hoops were about two meters wide, and when activated, formed a link between each other so that what went through one came out of the other. I think they may have been in the Lando Calrissian novels, but those are the closest things I can remember. They’re kind of like miniature Stargates from the franchise of the same name, except I think the hoops worked both ways and they only worked if they didn’t get more than fifty meters from each other. As for their provenance, no one knows who made them. This is from the old Essential Guide to Technology, I think, the one from either the 90s or very early 2000s. Hope that helped.

I’ve always thought the hyperspace barrier was kind of a silly concept. Also considering Obi-Wan had no trouble leaving the galaxy to discover Kamino, I’ve always wondered whether that was a plot hole. And why were they far enough from the galaxy at the end of ESB that they were able to see the entire galaxy? They had to have been millions of light years past the barrier in that scene.
@blackshogun2724 жыл бұрын
J T nah, the barrier is still there. Obi-Wan simply didn't need to go through it. The Rishi Maze satellite galaxy had begun to merge with Sky River eons ago. The barrier was weakened but low key produced several anomalies and hazards from two monolithic celestial clusters combining, this giving the title of the Rishi Maze by inhabitants in Sky River...
@jscorpio19874 жыл бұрын
BlackShogun 27 I still don’t buy the galactic barrier thing. What about the ending of ESB? If they were far enough away to be able to look out the window and see the entire galaxy, they were millions of light years beyond any so called barrier. Even Wookieepedia says the following about how far they were from the galaxy: That point, code-named "Haven" by the Rebels, was located beyond the Galactic Rim, far above the galactic equatorial plane and far away from any stars. It was beyond the galaxy's gravity well, making it a perilous journey to reach, one that many of the Rebel ships escaping from Hoth may not have been able to make. It is likely that the Rebellion suffered additional losses in the attempt to reach that point.

It is interesting that both the Star Wars and Star Trek have the idea of a galactic barrier that restricts or complicates travel in or out of their respective settings.
