I've studied this for a long time, and yet I am torn as to whether or not the Nachash in Genesis 3 is the same as Lucifer (Satan, The Adversary, who rebelled, etc.) who tempted Eve. Is it that Lucifer, HIMSELF, is a Nachash class of being or was it he, HIMSELF, who did the tempting/smooth-talking of Eve in the Garden, or is it that the Adversary/Lucifer/whatever "possessed" or somehow "coaxed" this "Serpent" (nachash) into tempting Eve. So, in essence, is it literally Satan who's doing the tempting, or is it a conspirator of Satan's who did the tempting FOR Satan? And if it's the latter, why would Lucifer do it that way, and not just do it himself? Your thoughts?

There is a reference to the snake crawling on the earth and eating the dust of the earth. Over the years this has made me ponder what this meant;well a few years ago I found out that snakes tastes small particles of dust in the air every time they flick their tongues;they take these dust particles into your body to help them identify threats food surroundings and more they store the dust like a map for future reference. So they literally eat dust.

And thats why I concluded it was used as serpent. I also did some studying and it seems to me that all men and women from beginning to end of time was as one in Adam. before God placed Adam in the Garden he told him to be fruitful and multiply, and it was so. This was before the seperation of eve as well. Meaning we all made the decision together as mankind to learn the knowledge of good and evil, Adam being all men and Eve all women together as one. Giving us all full accountability for our knowledge and punishment in this life. (Dying). Ive never heard this preached by anyone either. Jesse Clinton God told the sixth day creation to be fruitful and multiply. That’s all the races. Seventh day God rests. Eighth day He makes Adam. Then , later Eve. He does not tell them to be fruitful. He tests them. If they would of passed the test, God would have overshadowed Eve with His Spirit and Christ would of come through her and then eventually go be the savior to the sixth day creation. But Eve had sex with Satan, for he wanted to taint the seed, knowing Christ was to come through the genealogy of Adam. So, Gods backup plan was to follow the seed of Adam ( the tribe of Judah) and when an obedient couple came, overshadow her.( Mary and Joseph) they both are from the tribe of Judah. Hope this helped. Reread Genesis one and two. Peace be with you

Well done! I also made some studies on the subject, except that I don't have any book written. First: lucifer it is not the name of anything like what we know as being Lucifer (the archangel, or cereb/Cherubim). Heilel ben Shahar (in short - the morning star), in the literal context of Isaiah, it refers to the king of Babylon. But lucifer is just a word, a calling (I think you should have make it clear), a Latin translation of the word heilel. Heilel ben Shahar can be translated in a few ways (we exclude the meaning of the word lucifer - light bringer). "Heilel" can be "helel" and "shahar" cand be "saharon". Heilel - refers to a bright/shining star. Helel - to shine, also to boast. Shahar - dawn, morning, east (can refer to the crescent moon). Saharon - moon or crescent moon. So, "Heilel ben Shahar" - Shining star son of Dawn or simply a shining star and the crescent moon (removing the word "son"/ben). Now. If you read "The Epics of Baal", you will find that it can very well be what it's written in Isaiah (Heilel ben Shahar is Baal)(star and crescent being the symbol of Ba'al). The other thing that I have find about "Cherubim"(kerubhim) or singular Cherub(kerubh): Caleb/Kaleb (used as a name) or keleb The Bible's common word for dog. Also, insn't it "keleb" the same with Cerberus/Kerberos? (this may very well be far-fetched)

Given that the Genesis narrative is closely tied to Mesopotamian mythology, it's not a stretch to connect the serpent of Eden (Nāḥāš - נחש) with the Sumerian deity Ningishzida whose symbol was that of a snake. A ruler of the underworld (the dust), he was also known as the "Lord of the Good Tree".
@DerrickthePinecone3 жыл бұрын
I've studied this for a long time, and yet I am torn as to whether or not the Nachash in Genesis 3 is the same as Lucifer (Satan, The Adversary, who rebelled, etc.) who tempted Eve. @ihavenojawandimustscream46813 жыл бұрын
I really dont think so.There is little similiarity between Ningishzida and Nachas aside from the fact that they are both serpentine and associated with earthen elements;their roles could not be more different.(Lord of the good tree in Ningishzida's case is more of the fact that he was associated with vegetation) It is more reasonable to infer that both near east cultures venerated serpents as divine or semi-divine beings

What is your view of the Nephilim? Do you agree with Heiser as well on this?
@bens76866 жыл бұрын
I have plans to tackle that subject in queue. I think the evidence for the supernaturalist interpretation is overwhelming, especially after reading Amar Annus' paper. I also found Heiser's argument compelling in Unseen Realm.
@InspiringPhilosophy6 жыл бұрын
See, I read both his books on the issue and I was thoroughly unconvinced it is referring to supernatural beings. I take John Walton's view that they are just human rulers. Heiser never addressed my specific objections to his view or the reasons I think nothing supernatural is happening in Genesis 6:1-4. I don't think we can thrust a supernatural interpretation onto this small text unless we read it through the lens of the book of Enoch, which I believe to be a much later attempt to re-interpret this small passage. I can't see any reason to interpret Nephilim to mean anything else than 'men or renown.'
@bens76866 жыл бұрын
It's been a couple years, and my recollection of the arguments are clouded, so I will have to reassess the literature if I do a video on it. Annus discovered uncatalogued Mesopotamian inscriptions that point-blank call the Apkallu "Watchers." This is significant because Daniel 4 refers to the heavenly Watchers as קדשין--a title for the heavenly sons of God in Israelite and Ugaritic religion. Since Genesis 6 is full of Mesopotamianisms, these inscriptions would seem to therefore give us direct cultural interface. I agree that those who interpret the Old Testament with Enoch are using poor methodology, however, I think there are good arguments that the *New Testament* authors make allusions to Enoch in manners that imply *they* took the same supernaturalist interpretation of Genesis 6. For example, the Greek word translated “hell” in II Peter 2:4 is not the expected Hades but the anomalous tartarus. Bremmer notes, “Virtually all passages in which the verb (kata)tartaroo occurs refers to Greek myths which have giants contained to chains in an event similar to the Watcher interpretation of Gen. 6,” and we know first century Jews were drawing that connection (E.g. Josephus Ant. 1.73) Jan N. Bremmer, “Remember the Titans,” in The Fall of the Angels, (Netherlands: Brill, 2004), 58. I'm anticipating, however, that these arguments are old news to you, so I offer them merely as examples of why I currently land where I do on the issue.

In Job, the Accuser is still allowed access to the throne room with the Sons of God, yet Job, though written earlier than Genesis, came Chronologically later than Adam (barring a pre-adamic creation and humanity).

KJ, Prov25:2 "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter." Seminaries and pastors have built a box around themselves, fearing to search out God's concealed matter. In this, they fear being rejected by the others in that box. Thus, they fear man more than they fear God. Rev1:6 says we saved ones are kings, and we should be examining deeper hidden matter. But 2Tim3-7 describes today's (last days context) teachers; "...always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth." There is so much more in the Bible waiting for kings to find it. yea, some argue that Is 14 and Ez 28 aren't referencing the Satan So, here’s the bottom line. Finding Satan in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 is an excellent exercise in midrashic typology, but in terms of actual justification from the intent of the text, there is little that can be found. So, while it may well be that Satan fell because of pride, Isaiah 14 isn’t a reason to think so; and while it may be that he used to be in charge of music in heaven, Ezekiel 28 isn’t evidence of that.

I agree that the equation of "the Satan" with Isaiah 14's Lucifer was a move made by later Jewish theology. I've avoided mentioning Satan in this video for that reason.

pixels and papyrus So Lucifer and _the_ Satan of the Gospels and Revelations (which said the Eden serpent was Satan all along) aren't the same being? Satan is a generic term for Adversary though, so there were numerus Satans (Azrael for instance was probably the Satan of Job) and would include Lucifer.....would you kindly elaborate further in the future?

But if it is accepted that the Serpent of Eden is the shining one (which I think Heiser and Stanhope make a compelling case for) then surely that would count as evidence that they are one and the same.
@duckymomo79356 жыл бұрын
no, their argument holds. It's just that there isn't one ha-satan (according to Heiser) so the snake is correct, the verses are correct but they are not one being, ha-satan
@arachnophilia4276 жыл бұрын
indeed STN is a verb root. it occurs twice in the torah, in num 22 where it is malak-yahweh, the angel of the lord, who is doing the sataning. this angel is a stand in for yahweh, and in hellenistic philosophy becomes the demiurge, "wisdom" (logos). some early second century jews thought their cult leader from the century prior was an incarnation of this wisdom.

The Aztecs worshipped many "Gods" and one of them was "Quetzalcóatl" which means "feathered serpent" and it was represented as a serpent with wings and also as a white bearded man , who taught them many skills like harvesting and building and who they were waiting for his return as it was prophesied by their ancestors and whom they mistakenly thought was the Spanish Conquerors because they resembled Quetzalcóatl's "human" form and that's why the Aztecs didn't attacked them when they first saw them. I find it interesting that this "feathered serpent" or Dragon appears in many ancient cultures, even the Chinese culture.

This is a fine example of how looking at scripture in the original languages reveals a multi-dimensional meaning that we are oblivious to when reading it in English. That being said, Mr. Heiser does misinterpret a few things to support his conclusion that the villain of Eden was a serpent which I would like to draw your attention to. I agree that the word serpent and brass are the same in Hebrew, however a person describing an angel as “like polished brass” in appearance doesn’t mean they are brass. Brass contains impurities/dross that will melt before God Ezek 22:18 - 22, who is a fire Daniel 7: 9 - 11, that we must be pure to stand before Zech 13:9. The garden of Eden is NOT God’s holy mountain. God’s holy mountain is where Christ was installed as king Psalms 2:6, the holy city, Jerusalem, that comes down out of heaven from God after the final judgment Rev 20:11 - 15 & 21: 2 & 10. It is Zion where YHVH dwells on high, which is filled with justice and righteousness Isaiah 33:5. Eden, God’s garden (Hebrew gan) sounds like paradise, but a better word for it is enclosure. The Hebrew gan is from the verb ganan which means to cover, surround, defend. Eden is where we are tested by fire Joel 2:3, in the furnace of affliction Isaiah 48:10, which destroys 2/3, and 1/3 are refined as silver, tested as gold, and call on God and he will answer them Zech 13:8 & 9. In Ezekiel 31, trees are used as an analogy for mighty ones who rule the earth. He describes one like Pharaoh in greatness v2, Assyria was a very high cedar tree with its top among the clouds, the waters made it grow and the deep made it high, that became haughty in its loftiness, and all the birds, beasts and great nations lived under its shade, the cedars in God’s enclosure could not match it, could not compare with its beauty, and all the trees of Eden in the garden of God were jealous of it v3 - 10. God gave into the hand of the mighty one, for his wickedness, driven him out v11, and all the trees were given over to death, to the earth beneath, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit v14. This aligns with Ezek 28: 1 to 10 and is referring to Adam when he was driven out of Eden in Gen 3:24, given into Satan’s hand, who became the ruler of the world John 12:31. The ‘man’ (adam) created in God’s image in Genesis 1: 26 & 27 was both male and female, like the angels, like we will be if we are resurrected Matthew 22: 24 to 30. It was this male and female man (adam) that God formed from the dust of the ground, gave the breath of life, became a living being and was placed in the garden of Eden Gen 2:7 & 8. This is when the man became flesh, as Paul reveals in contrasting the first man Adam becoming a living being, with Christ, the last Adam, a life-giving spirit, the first man of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven in 1 Cor 15:45 & 47, revealing their opposite nature. Adam is identified as a mighty one (Hebrew ish) in Gen 2:23, 3:6 & 16. In Strong’s Concordance, ‘ish’ #376, means “god, god-like one, mighty one”, but is translated mostly as ‘man’, ‘men’, or in this case ‘husband’. It becomes evident when we look at the Hebrew text, that ‘man’ (adam’s) and ‘mighty ones’ (ish’s) are not the same Jer 49:18, ‘ish’ lie and ‘adam’ repents Numbers 23:19, ‘ish’ language is evil Psalm 140:11, ‘ish’ devise mischief and give wicked counsel Ezek 11:2, ‘ish’ set up idols Ezek 8:11 & 14:3, and it is no coincidence that Adam and Cain were both ‘mighty ones’ (ish) and both had the ground cursed for murder in Gen 3 & 4. Thus I conclude that Adam was the serpent who deceived Eve in the garden of Eden. As Paul stated “Since by a man came death, by a man came resurrection of the dead, for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive” 1 Cor 15: 21 & 22. Jesus was born a male child Rev 12:5 to recoup rule of the earth that Adam had lost to Satan. Jesus, became a fiery serpent, that when lifted up healed the nations Numbers 21:8 & 9 & John 3:14.

I've learned quite a bit from Heiser's divine council theology, but I'm perplexed that he thinks he is adding anything regarding Christianity's interpretation of Genesis 3. It's commonly accepted that the serpent was Satan (and not just a normal snake), and that the curse given to the serpent isn't just an explanation of why snakes crawl instead of walk. Isaiah 14 (obviously) and even Ezekiel 28 have been taught as showing the fallen-angel aspect of Satan, and of course John in Revelation explicitly tells us that Satan = the serpent. Unfortunately Heiser confuses as frequently as he illuminates...in stressing the divine nature of the serpent he downplays (denies?) the physical, embodied aspect of the serpent. But the passage is incoherent without it. See Genesis 3:1, where the serpent is described as craftier than the other wild animals. Or v. 14 where he is cursed above all livestock. The serpent, who lives his life crawling on the ground and eating dust, is thus a picture of the curse given to Satan. Genesis 3 explicitly plays up the physical aspect of the serpent and this cannot be ignored.

gwilson314 it is my unfounded theory that if mankind were made in the image of God, the animals maybe were made in the image of the angels. not all angels look like the appearance of humans. even in many folklores all around the world, they talk about pagan gods with semblance to animals. I think Lucifer is of the reptilian snake image. the curse she brought to her own kind, made some of her kinds hated her. when Snake is the most hated animal on earth.

Interesting. I today came to the conclusion that the serpent was Lucifer using a real life Serpent in Leviathan. It was the crooked serpent who was the tool of satan to deceive eve. So the curse affected both the literal serpent and the spiritual serpent.
@robertkeith7274 Жыл бұрын
That's been my conclusion as well. The two worlds - spiritual and physical - effect and REflect each other, the spiritual being predominant and causative. What occurs in the spiritual realm will always effect the physical.

The Feathered Serpent was actually a type of alien ship that landed vertically a bit like the falcon rocket except it was winged (this was when they were about 100 years more advanced of this actual human civilization). This type of ships was used by Lord Enki. Enlil or yahweh used a ship that resembled an Eagle when landed (because the cockpit shape). This is why it is Serpent (or dragon) vs the Eagle. Enki was also a geneticist. This is why his symbol is two entwined, winged serpent (representing DNA). The Anunnaki themselves weren't serpents although if they wanted they could create an illusion. Serpents are usually associated more nature centered civilizations such as the Mayans, Vikings, Celts, some African tribes while eagles more imperialistic civilizations such as Rome, the US, NAZI Germany, Napoleonic France and the Aztec (eagle warrior although they had a serpent god they were corrupted by the Eagle).

The Book of Revelation describes four angelic beings near the throne of god, one having the face of a man, one being like a lion, another like an ox, and one like an eagle. So we see that there are angels with animalistic features around the throne in that book. Perhaps Satan belonged to this group in the past and he was the one that was like a serpent. I also kind of wonder if this actually more of a case where the animals look like these angels, not the angels looking like the animals. I mean that the animals were made to look like these angels in order to honor them.

I agree with basically everything in this video. But I also believe that all of the Beast of the Field created in Genesis 2 as potential mates for Adam are similar Sapient Angelic beings and that only Genesis 1 described the creation of normal Animals. And this this ancient understanding of Genesis 2 and 3 is where the Lilith mythology originally came from.
