Many Germans were captured by Cetniks, Partisans as they retreated headlong North to avoid the Red Army as it advanced west.....many of the Germans died horribly, some had weights tied to them before they were thrown into lakes and harbours.....an SS Grenadier division had been created specifically for anti partisan duties in Yugoslavia - the SS Prinz Eugen...most of these were captured and it's not clear if any ever returned to Germany....they didn't have a good reputation.

The ustaša brutally massacred Nikola Tesla’s whole family and now they claim that he was a croat. He was drafted at the end of the war into a military unit and sent to the frontline, which was collapsing. So he probably spent his time in Ustasa on a retreat and then getting slaughtered by a Serb, the irony. Keep in mind that all the Serbs I met in my life were really great people, and I do feel collective guilt for the savagery.

My father was a 17/18-year old Wehrmacht Army officer cadet (Ensign) In Croatia in 1943 and 1944. Guess what he witnessed scared him for live - he never told me about it. After my father died, my favourite Uncle - who had fought at the Eastern Front - told me about what my father had told him when the two had walked off "to talk about the war". I was about 38 at the time, had served as a conscript myself in the Bundwehr and nearly threw up. It explained a lot about my father, and I wish I had known earlier. My family was never interested in Nazi ideology. After the war, my grandfather even got one of the rare "Entlastete/Exonerated" denazification classifications. Of course the Wehrmacht conducted war crimes, but one should also remember that the individual German soldiers went through their own, personal dilemmas just as Allied soldiers did.

Poplar of horror is the name for a poplar tree that was located in the village of Donja Gradina, part of the Ustasha camp Donja Gradina, where the Ustasha massacred Serbs, Jews, Roma and other inmates. This dried tree represents one of the most terrifying symbols of Donja Gradina and Jasenovac. Under the poplar and on it, the inmates were tortured and killed in the most brutal ways, which is why the inmates called that tree the 'poplar of horror'. Chains and specially forged wedges for torturing the victims were found in the crown of the tree and along its powerful trunk with a diameter of 2.10 meters. Those nailed to trees were left to die slowly for days. They would put them against the famous "poplars of death", so they would drive wedges through their chests and legs. The completely rotted tree collapsed in 1978. Branches and remains of driven wedges were preserved, which still bear witness to the monstrous crimes of the Ustasha.

Yes. Without the catholic chirch infrastructure and influence in Croatia, ustaše would have had a much harder time pulling it of, and even getting of the ground in 41. when they came out of italy and hungary to claim power. Their " beatified" bishop Alojz Stepinac gave Ustaše coup his blessing, and instructed all Catholic priests and believers to " cooperate with the new government, the government of independent state of Croatia". He knew all of it, as did his handler in vatican, and his boss- the pope. But, hey, it's just some Orthodox scum, so fuck them, right? After all, how dare they, the Serbian Kingdom liberate us from centuries of subservience t o the KuK, habsburg monarchy!? And they, croats, are still pushing for declaring this degenerate for a saint. Can you believe that shit. The Vatican hasn't dared, the man was to dirty even for their taste, that is to say, it was well documented. After the war the partisans tried him, and the disappointment they were, they did not have the decency to hang the shit. He did some time, and was released. Man, i could write you a 100 00 word essay on ustaše. But i wont. There are books, only not out of EU or generally, not out of the western authors.

I'm a Serb but one of my grandmas is Croatian. She told me about her relative who was a Catholic theology student, and in 1941 he was in the altar when Catholic Croatian priests came inside with their hands completely red from slaughtering Serbs. They washed their hands, put on the priestly clothes and proceeded to serve mass, give absolution from sins and to prepare the eucharist. When he saw that, he took off his robe, left the Catholic theological college and went to study economy I think.

@@stephengrahn9361 yeah.. personally I am a devout Orthodox Christian and as much as I would want to view the Catholics as our brothers in Christ, even with all the theological disagreements, I can never ignore the deeds of the Vatican. They've always fought against us and sought to establish dominance over Eastern Orthodox nations. Many Serbs were spared upon conversion to Roman Catholicism, they would just have to renounce Orthodoxy and Serbdom and call themselves Croats. These renouncers have ended up being the most brutal killers of Serbs, trying to prove that they aren't Serbs by competing in who will do the most brutal and gruesome acts. But this phenomena goes way back, which is why I've mentioned the Vatican.

Ok, yes it was the most horrific time in Serbian history (even worse than the Ottomans) and we won't forget - but we will forgive. However, we must look forward, but looking forward is impossible now since Croatia happened to be a member of EU and NATO quite smoothly after their WW2 mistakes, having ustasha parades once a year and not banning that ideology in 21st century. Also the Croats have never admitted their mistakes (like the Germans did) and are proud of their acts, and of course never confronted consequences. This is the main problem in the region and the main obstacle in developing further. How can it be that a country which has been on the right/winning side, ended up being the most guilty one for everything in the region? Lot of injustice for Serbs, lot of unsettled debts with Bosniaks (who are still thirsty because of the civil war in the 90s) and lots of incorrect history "facts" circulating around.

You are forgetting that in Croatia there were not only Ustashe, but also Partisans, led by Tito, a Croat himself (half Slovene). Also the Ustashe were defeated at the end of WW2 by the Partisans. Only for the independence of Croatia in 1991 they were brought up again to fight against the Serb aggression. And believe me, I hate to see that nationalism in Croatia. On the other hand, Serbia is also full of nationalist. And in both cases the governments keep the heat up to stay in power. Tito was the only bright star who could shut off nationalism and let the people experience 50 years of peace and co-habitation. I think it is unfair to give Croatia or the Croats the "Ustasha" stamp per default, while every country had collaborated in some way with the Nazis, even the Chetnik Serbs. Finally Croats played a huge contribution to beating the Nazis and liberating Yugoslavia. If you ask me, I would love that we all normalize and ditch the nationalism. Therefore we need new leaders...now tell me, how can new leaders arrive with full support while the people are brainwashed with nationalism, while being ripped off? In that case a crisis is necessary so someone with good intentions can get into power. Like Tito did. We have no other chance.

On 19 September 1941, Tito met with Mihailović to negotiate an alliance between the Partisans and Chetniks, but they failed to reach an agreement as the disparity of the aims of their respective movements was great enough to preclude any real compromise.[36] Tito was in favour of a joint full-scale offensive, while Mihailović considered a general uprising to be premature and dangerous, as he thought it would trigger reprisals.[30] For his part, Tito's goal was to prevent an assault from the rear by the Chetniks, as he was convinced that Mihailović was playing a "double game", maintaining contacts with German forces via the Nedić government. Mihailović was in contact with Nedić's government, receiving monetary aid via Colonel Popović.[37] On the other hand, Mihailović sought to prevent Tito from assuming the leadership role in the resistance,[36][38] as Tito's goals were counter to his goals of the restoration of the Karađorđević dynasty and the establishment of Greater Serbia.[39] Further talks were scheduled for 16 October.[38]

And one also distant relative was Partisan durring the war and became a police officer right after the war, there were some guards from Jasenovac in prison and the Communist party ordered their release so he and a friend of his, both of whom had families killed in Jasenovac, took prisoners and shot them. I think they went to prison for it but it wasn't too harsh, couple of years or somethnig like that...

Two of my greatgrand uncles had their throat slit by the ustasa in the church of Glina and then set on fire. There is a small monument with the names of the people killed that way in a small village called Kozaperovica in Croatia. The monstrosities the ustasas did in Jasenovac are too gruesome to speak of... I'm just astounded how the EU let the croatian government build a monument to Alojzije Stepinac a few years back, a man that was practically Ante Pavelic and Hitlers right hand in Croatia in the wwII representing the catholic churrch. Even after they condemned him of war crimes and sent him to prison the pope made him cardinal, like nothing happened. I'm simply astounded by the cover ups...

My modest take: 1) In 1942, my grandaunt's husband was 17 and lived in a Serbian village in Lika, NDH. When Ustashas arrived, he hid in the nearby woods and from there witnessed the murder of all his family and relatives, some 30 people in total. As a sole survivor, he escaped to the woods. A month later, he came across Partisans and joined them. He proved a good fighter, receiving the rank of Lieutenant by the end of WW2. Unfortunately, he also adopted harsh communist indoctrination which he retained until his death. 2) The weapon shown at 14:24 is a custom-made knife with a leather belt used to kill more efficiently (quickly). Ustashas gave it the name Srbosjek - "a Serb cutter". 3) For those who are just beginning to learn about what Ustasha did, I'd warn you to use indirect sources first. I've heard of a woman who was to translate Ustashas's diaries to some investigation committee; she went to some extent and stopped, saying that she could not even read the things described there. There are things you would think are impossible exaggerations, but mankind *did* reach such a tragic bottom. 4) The crucial difference between the armies mentioned is in their origin. Chetniks are remnants of the official Yugoslav army, Ustashas were created/supported by Germans and the Vatican, and Partisans were created/supported by English/Americans and later by Soviets. In Yugoslavia, in parallel with WW2, there were also ethnic, civil, and religion-led wars, all fuelled from the outside.

My grandfather was an orthodox montenegrin child whose parents were murdered and he was captured by the Ustaše in Croatia. The things he saw as a little child stayed in his mind until his death, he died at 86. Slaughtering for fun, using all possible methods. They also had competitions in serb slaughtering. He survived by digging a hole under a fence and was bringing corn to his fellow prisoners. One night he went out to collect corn and was saved by the germans. The nazis... R.i.p. Grandpa ❤

Actually, this is being taught in Croatian history classes in schools. I know, as I'm Croat, living in Croatia. On the other hand, talking to people from your original homeland, I've learned that the atrocities done by chetniks - the militant fascist organization from Serbia - in the WWII and before it in Kingdom of Yugoslavia are being skipped from the curriculum, and chetniks are being celebrated as heroes and liberators even today. On top of that the atrocities done in Croatia and Bosnia by chetniks and ex Yugoslav army led by Serbian government in the ex-yu war of the 90s are being denied, with Srebrenica taking the cake at that. So, yeah, I'm all for you guys sharing openly the truth about all that has happened in the 20th century history of this area whenever and wherever you can. Provided it's the whole truth and not just the segment of the truth that supports your forever-victim narrative. I've been told by a girl from Belgrade in regards to what happened in the 90s - well, no one dropped bombs on your heads. 😳😳 It was a few years ago and she was about 30 at the time, so not really a kid. That told me everything I needed to know about your schooling system, your government policies and your culture in general.

Our families have suffered tremendously under the hand of Ustashe. My mom's family from Kordun especially, as the majority of them were massacred in the Glina church, in the summer of 1941. On two separate occasions, the Ustaše gathered and herded poor unsuspecting Serbian people, then locked them inside the church, and butchered them, by slitting their throats or smashing their heads by hammers and riffles. Ustashe then set the church on fire to burn the bodies, and waited outside to shoot any survivors attempting to escape the flames. It's a shame that Croatia, even to this day, tries to minimize and negate the crimes committed by its Ustashe, and all of that was supported by Vatican.

It was listed as one of the reasons for the tens of thousands of home guard soldiers who defected to the partisans. Many of the home guard soldiers were conscripts, many of whom had served in the Yugoslav army or had supported the Croatian Peasants Party before the war and as such were supportive of Croatian independence at first. But as the war went on and the brutality of the Ustashe death squads were experienced first hand by home guard troops defections were rampant, with entire units defecting with their equipment, to the point that the Germans no longer trusted the home guard to fight against the partisans.

Where the Ustasha committed numerous crimes, one of the most shocking killing devices I saw were sticks with knives on the end, stuck in a canal filled with water, a backwater that led into a larger river next door, they would tie a man, push him onto those knives, which would stab him, probably fatally, but it is not certain. I had several relatives who served in Yugoslavia for a time during the Second World War. A great uncle was a major in the infantry and my grandfather told me how he would clear a village of partisans by simply firing the anti-tank gun down the Main Street, making them think he brought a light field gun with him. My grandfather himself became a district commander (Ortskommandant) after the German navy scuttled their ships (previously taken from the Italians), commanding a mixed company of sailors, soldiers and airmen, in addition to some Croatian Hiwis assigned to his unit. There were no open battles with partisans, though he was still bitter late in life when he reported how he lost several men who were killed with knives while they were sleeping, when Tito’s partisans snuck into his camp. When withdrawing back to Austria, he was ordered to leave the Hiwis in Yugoslavia, but he took them with him anyway. I presume the British eventually turned them over to Tito’s men.

On my mother’s side, around 16 members of the extended family were sent to Jasenovac, and their fate was never discovered. My grandmother, along with her two children, was captured near Kozara and somehow managed to escape with a few other family members from the column headed for Jasenovac. She always spoke about remembering a young Ustasha soldier who turned his head to the other side while they slipped through the bushes. My grandmother's sister, a 16-year-old girl at the time, was a partisan courier. On one occasion, while crossing the railway alone with a message, she was shot seven times, one bullet even hitting her in the head. Miraculously, she survived. She was initially saved from a Ustasha knife by German soldiers, and later, in a hospital in Bihać, Muslim nurses hid her in the basement until she recovered. Afterward, she found refuge with a pharmacist near the hospital. In total, around 30 family members didn’t survive the war, and those who did were only able to return to their burned village in 1947.

Kudos to you Stefan for having the interest-and the courage-to tackle the immensly complex topic of WW2-Yugoslavia. As for the topic at hand, here are a couple of (I believe) relevant quotes from my books: By the summer of 1942, the German military authorities in the region were unanimous in the opinion that the genocidal policies of the Ustashe regime were directly responsible for the present difficult situation. Unlike their own calculated reprisals, they regarded the wanton atrocities of the Croatian fascists as senseless and counter-productive. In order to curb the activities of Ustashe militias in the areas targeted for pacification, the German occupation forces had been declaring various parts of the NDH as “Operational Areas” since January 1942, with reluc- tant approval from Zagreb. In these areas, the civil administration was suspended and taken over by the German Army. German units also intervened locally on sev- eral occasions, disarming undisciplined Ustashe units and arresting their members suspected of committing crimes. When a German company [a "Brandenburg" unit] executed 257 civilians in Grgurevci, Syrmia in early June 1942 as revenge for the death of some its comrades [two NCOs], Ambassador Kasche wrote a letter to General Bader. Judging by the latter’s response, Kasche equated this incident with similar acts perpetrated by the Ustashe. Bader responded that the shooting brought an end to guerrilla activity in the area around the village, and added: “I find the comparison between the conduct of this German com- pany and Ustashe atrocities insulting to the German troops.” Although the talks [on prisoner exchange in August 1942] were meant to be strictly informal, the size and composition of the German delegation meant that it acted in a semi-official manner. The Wehrmacht represen- tatives could not openly criticize the Ustashe due to the presence of Kasche’s envoy, Kreiner. Privately, the Germans usually did not hide their contempt for the Ustashe. Ott told his Partisan captors “that we [the Germans] would send them to hell and hang the whole bunch if only we could find suitable replacements. These fools and their bloodthirsty policies have caused the present discontent and have driven the people to arms.” As far as Yugoslavia was concerned, the [German] officers shared the attitudes of all of their colleagues whom the Partisans had met in the past; they spoke of the Ustashe with a mix of contempt and horror and quipped about the incompetence of the Italians. ("Parleying with the Devil:Prisoner Exchange in Yugoslavia 1941-1945", University Press of Kentucky, 2020, pp. 98, 100, 148) Even though the rumors about the quantities of destroyed wheat turned out to be largely unfounded, the Axis proceeded with their plans calling for a radical showdown with the guerrilla menace in these parts [province of Syrmia, summer 1942]. The Ustashe used this as a pretext for carrying out an anti-Serb pogrom so massive and ugly that even the German top brass-some of whom had complained only a little while earlier that there were “too many arrests and too few executions in Syrmia”-felt compelled to demand the removal of key perpetrators. ("Sea of Blood: A Military History of the Partisan Movement in Yugoslavia 1941-45", Helion, 2022, p. 159)

My doctor grandfather from Upper Silesia, a fervent anti-Nazi, was forced aged 38 into the Wehrmacht towards the end of the War to serve as a medic and was posted to Croatia. He witnessed appalling atrocities instigated he said by the partisans, in particular to mutilation of genitalia. He was captured at the end and en route to being transported to the Soviet Union, he and his accomplice managed to escape making their way on foot to Austria where they crossed into the British zone and were treated in a 🇬🇧 field hospital. He discovered afterwards that his wife (my grandmother) was murdered by the Soviets when invading Silesia, whereby my mother (14) just managed to survive. Mussolini hated the Ustahsa because they were in fact cock blocking his "mare nostrum" expansion that also included Croatia (in fact Italy never got over the loss of Dalmatia and Istria even today many Italians openly "want it back"), chetniks were armed because Italy wanted to take more Croat land and they couldnt do it directly because of German interests and potential issues with Berlin. Im from Croatia and I have a story about fighting a lost war. So its 1944, Germans ran away from NDH to defend Berlin, they left us weapons and equipment saying "try to defend against Soviets" and Soviets JUST COULDN'T PASS ACROSS DRAVA. Keep in mind partisans were rising and NDH army had more in interest to clean partisans then defending against Soviets. Now, there is a statue around Osijek in Croatia in honour for all dead Russian trying to pass the river. The vast majority of partisans on the territory of the NDH were Serbs who escaped from the Ustasha slaughter. According to documents created during the war (reports on the number and national composition of the partisans), and published after the war in the Collection of Documents, Volume V, Book 30, the national composition of the divisions created on the soil of Croatia in 1942 was: Sixth Lika Division - 96% Serbs; Seventh Banija Division - 92% Serbs Eighth Kordun Division - 95% Serbs Twelfth Slavonian Division - 85% Serbs In the Dalmatian brigades, the composition was mixed, although mostly with a Croat majority of around 70-80%, except in the brigades from the north of Dalmatia, which had a higher percentage of Serbs. According to the minutes of his speech at the Second Session, Avnoja Croatian communist and representative of the NOP of Croatia, Vladimir Bakarić said, among other things: "At the first session, we were more representatives of the Serbian resistance in Croatia than representatives of the NOP of Croatia." Secondly, I can hardly believe that you spent 3 years in your history lessons exclusively on WW2. Thirdly, why should Croatia and its involvement in WW2 be part of a school curriculum? WW2 is such a complex topic that the main focus must be on the main aspects, e.g. why did it break out, which were the major powers involved, what can we learn from ist to avoid future wars.

Anyway in one of the many lectures she was giving she talked about how/why she left Croatia, poverty, violence, communism. Her mom brought her to America. I was just trying to keep her talking to run out the clock for the class so I asked why it sucked so bad. She succinctly explained the Russian sphere after WW2 but also told us about the atrocities her mother and grandmother experienced during the war. Horrible, so horrible that at that time I didn’t believe her. She never said Ustaše specifically but she said men were roaming from place to place slaughtering people. Said that her Grandfather was murdered by associating with the targeted people, she said they stabbed him and paralyzed him. Than her grandmother went to aid him and when the men realized he wasn’t dead and someone was helping him they took her grandma and gouged out her eye as punishment than raped her on the spot forcing him to watch.
