The initial appeal of the concept of Vtuber is that seeing an anime/manga character alive as if they exist in real life (albeit virtually on the internet). That was my first thought when I watched them. They're relighting the candle. My next hope is to see an actual traditional vtuber back. Doing KZbinr things but as an anime character.

​@@spurringbtw, you can roleplay someone is more close to your personality but still distinct from your true self. It can be done, that's literally how humans in general act with people from different social groups. That's literally how I am with my church peeps, my choir peeps, my drinking peeps, my college peeps, my nerd peeps, my sports peeps, etc. There are some inside jokes that are heresy to say in another group, and behaviors that only appear when you surround yourself with certain types of people. Of course, there will be people who can't really do those things, no one is forcing them to. That said, there are some who are great at shifting behaviors and characters to fit the current situation(hence why we have actors, actresses).

From their debuts I got the vibe that Fuwamoco and Bijou were interested in being vtubers from days past. Fuwamoco handled their models well and connected with that aspect of it, it's not just an avatar, it's important. I haven't had much time to check out much of their streams to confirm though. I don't really need extensive roleplaying, but it's nice to see when vtubers incorporate part of their design into themselves so that while we see the streamer's personality the model doesn't become irrelevant. Some models definitely have less to work with though.

Fuwawa has more control over her model than anyone currently in Hololive save a couple members. That’s kinda why they’re amongst my favorites now. It’s a slept upon thing that frustrates me that most VTubers are perpetually in happy mode when doing or playing anything. Some exceptions are Baelz, Calli, Pekora, and Miko I’d say.

For me the peak of vtuber role-playing was Marine's 78-year-old stream - she not only stayed in character and held a voice for a whole hour, she basically provided an epilogue for a few Hololive stories, which basically never advance past each talents debut, Haachama eing the exception in that she built and acted on something new essentially from scratch. Not sure if the twins measure up to that, but hood on them for trying.

100% agree. Fuwawa and Mococo are immersed in their characters, and I love it so much. The Hololive standard is that the character is a thin sheet over the top of the talent just being themselves. While they're all wonderful and charming that way, the commitment makes the pure sweetness of FuwaMoco just that much better.

I think this is what's putting Marine on the rise as well (she has surpassed Pekora by a pretty decent margin as the most popular JP member, subscriber-wise at least). Even after several years of Vtubing, she is still pretty dedicated to playing the horny pirate and pretend 17 year old shtick (like, all her original songs are based on those concepts), and people love her for it.

I'm not against it but I'm just worried about those parasocial fans that might think they aren't real people and just anime characters that can be treated as objects. That's the danger of putting up that illusion. It's not like it doesn't happen even if they're not acting but the chances are much higher if they do. It's why a lot of vtubers stopped their roleplaying because it has some benefits and advantages and it can help them avoid those kinds of problems in the future. EDIT: Also it's difficult to the point that it's pointless to keep playing character because the illusion can get ruined just from technical issues, lack of preparation, sudden stream transitions, etc. A lot of people can notice it, become aware and eventually get tired of them still trying to keep up an act.

The whole point of vtubing to me is believing anime is real. I don't want to know about the girls behind the avatar, they're not real, they don't exist, because the character IS REAL. That's why I first fell in love with Kizuna Ai, she NEVER broke character and she was always an "AI" and never talked about growing up as a real person. And its why I fell in love with GGNL too, because the girls there were 100% their characters and never broke character either, it was like the visual novel was taking place in our real world and the characters were real. Fuwamoco gets it. And for people like me who stopped following Vtubers after Kizuna's hiatus because none of the modern Vtubers felt virtual anymore, Fuwamoco is both a breath of fresh air and a return to the golden age.

Especially since their past dilemmas went to crap, they actually revolutionized this. I'd go on to say that Shiroi also adds more variety in what she does than just singing, chatting, and video games. Never once ran into a Vtuber that would talk so much about books and stuff that'd remind you of your schooldays, but you are somehow interested in it this time. While ive never been a fan of the hard kayfabe and just found it distracting cringe most of the time, FuwaMoco are damn amazing at it. (Been here since Coco debut, fight me) Even Bijou said "wow its like you two are actually real dogs". DN nailed it towards the end with "no politics, make me forget the world's problems for a bit". Hololive has been so incredibly good at training their talent on how to avoid politics so thouroughly it feels like im in 2006 again where the most political thing was debating which next gen console ro buy. Hell ive seen EN girls offhandedly say word for word what is normally considered a political statement and not 1 comment pointed it out. Its like everyone there just forgets about politics during the stream and context matters again!

Been finding the strange limitations and cadences Hololive seems to have, logistically makes pretty damn good sense. For instance new generations aren't immediately included in 3D content and things like Holofes. We can see the benefits right now as a lot of EN are over in JP preparing for something and just aren't streaming as much. But the Kouhais are streaming strong, keeping the fresh content flowing and supporting their Senpais when those larger projects get released. Then when the newbies have their fan bases established, they'll be ready for 3d and those larger projects... And in comes the next batch of kouhais.

I feel that I understand now how a vtuber should stand out when there's a purpose of having a vtuber model in the first place. If you are putting effort of adding story and lore into your vtuber model for your debut, viewers may expect that vtuber to stay in-character in some degree. Others who just want to have a vtuber model just for fun, that's okay. This only applies to content creators who want to be in the spotlight that requires putting effort of using that model which includes roleplay. Like, the person behind the model can still be themselves, but if they know how to twist their storytelling between irl and lore of the character they play as, then I think they have a chance to attract people and go big later on. Advent girls especially Shiori and Fuwamoco imo, are able to roleplay very well with their audience because they go out of their ways to twist their storytelling and interaction with fans to be worthwhile and entertaining. That's why I enjoy watching their content more than other vtubers.

Real talk: it really depends on how long they can keep up their characters. Even professional actors don't keep characters for as long as vtubers do. Its understandable that they would want to stop doing their characters or change their characters to be closer to their actual personalities, because its easier and less stressful. Its actually amazing that some vtubers have kept their characters up so far.

Yup, I think it's probably a bad idea for the long term, if I remember correctly, that's something that happened to Haachama where she was stressed about playing her character's role and just decided to just be herself most of the time. In my opinion acting a role may only work in VTubing, if the role isn't too different from the person playing's personality. And I don't think he knows how stressful that is, especially if you're a big VTuber, it's not a single acting role, it's live action and a lot of unpredictable things happen live(Namely Chat), I don't think it's worth the stress, I wouldn't recommend.

They're very good at doing this. Among the very best in the industry, I'd say. Their real life personality is folded into their characters to a fair extent. It means they don't have to work as hard to stay in character. They also spent a long time training before their debut so that being in character is as natural as possible. All their work time is spent in character too, so it remains second nature to them. They don't run any other channels or ventures simultaneously either. No distractions allowed and maximum discipline. True professionals.

When we first say them in the trailer I thought the only 2 people who could play the 2 dogs are gogo nippon(also for anyone say your exposing there past like bro you had rev and false already say they were gogo nippon I'm the past) with gogo nippon you can tell they love vtubing and capture what a vtuber is supposed to be. Yes for some people they can be cringe and there content is not for you but imo there cringe in a good way in there completely playing there dog twins to the tea for an example when they was asked a question saying that is english not your native language and are you Japanese the twins say no are first language is dog language than English and Japanese. Even though we can clearly tell there Japanese they are so into character they say dog language. I think fuwamoco might be the only hololive en Advent members who do end up keeping in character because they are professionals. I don't know about the rest of hololive Advent though. The rest of hololive en gave up on staying in character a while ago. I could be wrong, but I hope that I won't be.

I have nothing against Bijou or Narrissa but they have already shown themselves to be different from their characters already. Shiori is hard to pinpoint but she does the Name Archiver or Bookworm justice. As for Fuwamoco they are 100% in character every stream. Bau Bau every day.

Hololivers that are consistent with their characters are the following: Marine, Pekora, Luna, Kronii, Mumei, FuwaMoco, Bijou, Sora, Watame, Korone, Okayu(also how hype will a OkaKoro FuwaMoco collab be?!?), Risu(sort of), Polka, Koyori(surprisingly does her best to maintain kayfabe as difficult as it is with how Pon she is) and that's about it imo

While I don't mind either way if they drop their character as long as they are entertaining, being in character does adds to the stream and can be kinda fun. Love how they are committing to being cute doggos BAU BAU. They are doing amazing at that and the pair complements each other extremely well and are my favourite of Advent, though from what I've seen, the entire Advent is crazy strong as well. Mococo so far is my favourite of the pair, but honestly, they need to be together to create these amazing streams.
