2 of my favorite "older" vtubers are still doing relatively alright, but the devastation caused by KZbin's removal of fan translated captions is severely overlooked. They both were experiencing a decent amount of growth before that just plateaued them completely.

YT being YT. Fucking adds shit no one asks for and removes highly praised ones. Mix that with BS and sudden changes in Algo parameters, video specifications not one soul without the backing of the executive board gets to know beforehand and the degree they go to FORCE CCs into making shit that fits the mold they demand be followed and you can see how utter shit being a CC for a Job is.

Yea a lot of people don’t talk about this which leads me to believe they weren’t really there watching these girls when they were big. During the fan translation era Mirai Akari and the others were hitting 100k and over a video. After it got removed non Japanese viewers had no way to engage with them unless they understood Japanese. You literally saw like half their viewership start to drop off after that. Then came the streamers Niji/Holo, that just finished the OGs off relevancy wise.

Yes and no. It's true that the removal of translated captions did hurt AI's popularity in the West, it's her decline in popularity in Japan that hurt more. Simply put, her content is outdated combined with the rise of both Holo and Niji that slowly killing her popularity. Her only real popularity these days is that of the "first Vtuber" who is already past her prime

Tokino Sora is technically one of those OG Vtubers but she's still managing to survive and be successful on her own. Sure, she might not have the most sub but she's still more relevant than many of the OGs. It's how they adapt and change when the market changes

It's important to remember that for some of these OG VTubers (Ai aside), it's less a failure to adapt and more that VTubing is a side gig for them - they don't necessarily want to make it their whole career. That's not really compatible with the hololive-style content firehose.

No their content is using 3d so they always need to do it in the studio with staff and supervision unlike vtuber streamers they just do it at home and they cant really beat the chat live interaction and reaction

Yeah, Kizuna lost her luster to me when I found out that she had like 3 different actors. I knew the OG was off doing shows and such, but it was just strange having 2 other ladies trying to pretend to do content like her and as her. To me, it was like seeing some guy dressing himself up as PewDiePie, unironically try selling himself as the man and even faking Pewd's reactions while gaming. It's just weird and impersonal - much different than getting a new VA to play a fictional character for a show. When those like Miko, Pekora, Korone, and eventually all of HoloEN came along for me (am now a Sapling and apart of the moldy pink Hareforce o7)... you knew they weren't going to do that - each character was actually THEM; a singular person behind that avatar having mainly honest reactions and sharing moments with the crowd. As much as they play up their fictional personas, you knew that's as far as the acting was really gonna go and they only do it for fun and FlaVR. It's just more honest and personal, thus, becoming more fun and engaging. Still, gotta pay some respect to the OGs for helping to pave the way. My hat is still off to them.

Even getting a new VA to play a fictional character still get backlash from the fanbase tbh. Look at how Star Wars handled when the VA of Darth Vader retired, they use the AI to replicate the voice and the fans seem to accept it more than getting a new VA

@@cuongquoc5877 Difference is that Star Wars is a plot-based medium. At some point, the story will go on, old subjects will be touched and someone will have to fill the role of old characters. I think of this along the lines of Dragon Ball or Avatar: The Last Airbender too, where voice actors have died. As terrible as that is, one can't just stop the show and throw the future of everything in the trash. The mantle will have to eventually be carried again, even if some fans don't like it. So, it's still different enough with vtubers as they are not chained by a plot of any sort. Their characters aren't being created and written by manga makers or Stephen Spielberg. Their characters are theirs from the ground up - art design aside, in most cases. They get help here and there, but in the end, they carry everything. In short, 80 years from now, someone will likely play as Darth Vader for another movie. Plenty of people will probably love a performance loyal to the old character. But 80 years from now, the most we'll get from current vtubers is AI versions. Maybe some stories and tributes of sorts. That's it. A direct Gura, Pekora, Ironmouse, Pippa, or Shylily replacement will very likely never happen.

I totally agree about the Live Streaming. People think Kizuna Ai downfall is when she has multiple clones. But I think the problem is the REASON she need to clone herself. The company is just bad at promoting their talents outside of Kizuna and bad management overall. That led to bankruptcy and the talents either retired or moved to other company

It's really sad. Kizuna Ai was my first exposure to vtubers, and I enjoyed her content so much (never really cared whether it was skits or live). That's why it also makes me feel sad when I see people still consuming the misinformation about her to this day. I also hoped that the anime would somehow revive her career but, yeah. I just want the OG's to be successful in the industry they trailblazed. But somehow, people forgot about them. Some even straight up disrespects them, just because. The whole thing just makes me really sad.

Kaguya Luna was one of the biggest corporate blunders from that era, I'd say even more so than Kizuna Ai. At least Kizuna went out with a bang, and hasn't officially retired, but Kaguya Luna and Mirai Akari just basically had all their soul drained from them by corporate suits and got spat out without any recognition. I'm sure in the hands of a more capable manager Luna would have gone to the moon just as her name says. She was bombastic, engaging, she was funny, she was spontaneous, she had everything except a competent manager and a manager to recognize just how talented she was, is what she needed. But those dicks didn't even bother fixing her model's frame rate during performances and it went on for so long it became a running joke. I'm happy at least Oda Nobuhime got the happy home she rightfully deserves, and Siro is starting to make a resurgence while Hinata is still doing her own thing free of corporate dumbassery, but it does still tug on me heart every once in a while of what could have been if these girls hadn't been so choked by corporate suits and dumb executive decisions.

I still think about Kizuna Ai, the Eilene Family + Moe, GamerBu + Cocoa, & many of the others i consider OG. I wish the lot of them didn't leave but businesses that don't listen to their talents nor their fans don't realize that those people that draw in the intrigue(the talents) and those that are fueling them (the fans) are the first to be burned by the bad business practices & lack of self awareness. This hurts especially bc a lot of VTuber businesses straight up nuke channels once its over. Leaving us fans to only reminisce about those good times or scramble trying to preserve our favorite moments with our favorite people. I still think about the wonderful covers Cocoa Domyoji did but not only her channel got nuked when the company said they weren't, but the clone channel is still a sour reminder for me what once was. Sure og Cocoa is still doing great but i still miss her VTuber shenanigans very much. Same for Miria, GamerBu, & Natsuki. Luckily some other 3D VTubers like HimeHina are still receiving a decent amount of success despite not getting translated anymore. They are pumping out banger original songs & covers & are also making short form content to stay relevant with the times. Honestly i think we're lucky if we know where or who our older VTubers reincarnated into, but a lot of us aren't that lucky whether the talent is just out of scene entirely or if we just don't know.

Looking at this comment truly makes me cry... A fellow fan of the old Gamebu Project... Before Hologra, they were my go to humor since they're just as good at it. But the best thing that could've happened to me while I stayed with that channel were the introduction of Aogiri Highschool, Suntory as well as Domyoji Cocoa's debut. I was a fan of Cocoa's shenanigans and especially her covers of Sand Planet, Alien Alien and most of all, Loser. I LOVED her voice when she sang it... She was the reason I fell in love with the song, that I still can't believe I didn't download it before the channel got nuked... I miss her to this day... I really do... But most of all, I will miss Gamebu in all its glory...

I wouldn't necessarily say the OGs are irrelevant. At least not in the normal non internet rat meaning of it. I feel their involvement in the attempt to bring a legit whole new tag to the whole internet was the best most relevant thing out there. As far as agreeing with something, the sad truth that when you do work on something new, you are likely working on a non perfected formula and you WILL eventually be either replaced or will fully drop the project to allow others to mend it and make it better. So I wouldn't say the OGs are irrelevant, they have just been theoretically let to rest to allow room for anyone new to playdough the formula to make something special.

I remember I heard about Nekomiya Hinata before Hololive because of her insane PUBG clips. It's like you said, vtubers back then where more of a brand than an individual persona/entertainer. I feel that whoever manages her channel forced her to do the 3D skits when streaming was really becoming popular about 3 years ago. She has 500k subs, but you can see she only gets around 10k views, not live viewers, but total views of her streams compared to other vtubers with the same amount of subs. I don't see any translated clips of her recent streams either. Unfortunate. Especially considering that she did collab with Pekora and Marine, a couple years ago.

IMO, Kaguya Lune and Mirai Akari are few of OG that had saddest behind the scene problem. Kaguya Luna who became 'slave' of the company and not being allowed to do other things the company dictate. Mirai Akari was sold to other company.

I still enjoy tuning into Hinata's streams and having her in the background. While I was along with the many who watched Ai back in her popular days, Hinata Nekomiya quickly became my original favorite. Hololive took me away though, and I stopped watching her for a long time. However, I eventually started tuning in again some time last year and find myself trying to catch her streams. it is impressive how long she has gone, given that she was one of OGs (One which I feel is rarely mentioned). . Despite there being plenty of other streamers I watch more regularly, I feel she is one of the ones that will hurt the most should she graduate. I worry it is only a matter of time, she is not very popular...

KZbinrs, fashion trends, memes gadgets, comedy, tv shows, anime, etc. When they become stale and cant produce anything good behind it or keeoing up with the audiences, they will die and forgotten. Thats part of cycle of life. As other example is hatsune miku. I remember in my junior years, everyone talking about her and listen to many song she made and making cover songs to it. Nowadays theres many people that didnt even know who is hatsune miku. And now many vtubers karaoke and AI voice can sing more natural and better than vocaloid. Miku and vocaloid fame dwindling down. When their newest game out, i dont see any excitement that i saw at peak in 2012-15. Its like nobody cares. Its cycle of life, nothing last forever and as we aged too in life we moving on to many things realized it or not. Yes the OG vtubers really start trends of vtubers but streaming vtubers like nowadays, they cant follow the content then thats it. Like you said i hoped they succeed to anything they do outside vtubing.

I had known about Kizuna and Hololive prior to the early 2020 boom, though only Hololive thanks to Azur Lane, I was never interested in short form content. That had been the major hurdle for me to even watch Kizuna, because I just couldn't care less about scripted content. But, seeing Korone play Doom 64 live changed my perceptions on vtubas. Even now, I don't really sit in on talk or react streams, but give me some of that (sometimes flubbing) through games and reacting with the audience in organic ways. Seeing someone pick up a game I am intimately familiar with and seeing them experience it for the first time is kind of like experiencing it yourself again for the first time. Now, Twitch had existed long before that, and I watched twitch a lot, but there was a definite passion and sincerity, especially with Korone, to connect with all of their audience, including the EN fans, that drew me in. I feel like that was missing at the time, and still now with a lot of vtubers falling back on shortform and react content. I'm hoping it doesn't go away entirely with the current push towards shorts/tik tok brainrot.

Kizuna Ai was unusual when she first appear. A youtuber with anime girl avatar? Never happend before, at least not mainstream. But those old Vtubers videos feels too much like a normal Japanese TV shows, it gets stale pretty fast. I really enjoy Hololive that does variety shows featuring the members in the official channel, like irl idols, but if that’s their only content i wouldn’t have stayed for long.

I was not expecting to see Yomemi, Moemi, and Natsumi Moe on this vid but dang the good old days and besides them Kizuna Ai and Yuni were some of my firsts and then Miko got recommended to me by that exact GTA N word vid and I quickly watched her and discovered Pekora and Akai Haato and even found out that the Azur Lane's Kawakaze was not stollen chara design but was actually drawn by the same artist as Fubuki's hahahahah
