Hey, so, here's a thing.
When listening to the video one final time, I wrote another paragraph to stick in to the story section of the video. But then I forgot to record it. So I present to you an unused discussion point of this video, hooray!
"Now, I've talked mad shit about Alex Mercer for the past few minutes so real quick I just wanna say, he isn't a total flop. It is kind of endearing just how badass he is, and Barry Pepper's delivery of the character is uniquely and interestingly melancholy. It's sad that he spends most of the cutscenes standing in corners and talking, because if he had more genuinely badass moments in cutscenes with context behind them, I think he could've been a really weird and memorable protagonist. Completely ruined him in the second game, but that's an entirely different thing that I don't wanna get into or I'll get upset."

I loved morphing into a soldier and walking around the infected area and just watch the carnage sometimes I would join a squad walking around and help shoot the infected so cool to be able to do that. Also I'd walk about and then randomly grab some helpless fool run up the top of a building and devour them or throw them across the map or drop them to their death and watch them be torn apart or throw them at a wall or slice them in half or make them blow up or throw another person at them or send one of my hounds of death to kill them or just shoot them with a gun.. the list goes on. Fucking Love both Prototype's god damn we need a new one.

I actually used to have a SHIT ton of fun in the first game by disguising myself as a marine and just going to town in the infected red zones with the marines. Using only the guns and hand to hand combat to take down the nonstop infected and especially the hunters. I was younger then, around 15 but I could do it for hours. It just felt cool playing a super soldier marine and whooping ass. Especially when you unlocked the max sprint speed.

This is exactly me. I would disguise as a brown haired guy in a suit and role play some kind of superhuman Hitman. I'd walk along and find my "target" grab him and throw him at wall or quickly run up a building and pretend that I question him before punt kicking him many blocks from a tall building. Edit: Also I had two save files. One is maxed out Mercer, and the other is right after mercer gets the disguise ability. I would play out an origin story as lesser powered Mercer which was way more fun than you'd think. His jump is so low that you actually are forced to walk run and stuff to get around. Makes the world feel bigger too. Try it sometime. I stop progressing right before going to see Mercers sister.

Problem from game 1: No Tendrils like 2 (except for the finish move) Problem from game 2: just run up a building. The protagonist of 2 is slow as Heller.

Yeah that was the problem with the first game. Too many moves and the problems with mapping them on a controller. IGN says it was impossible to preform the cannonball attack because you had to press a whole two buttons at once, and they wanted to do the cannonball sooooooo bad... So they had no choice but to take off 3 points from the final score. Can you belive it?

I must disagree with your opinion on the tone of the story and character. Yes you do make a compelling argument about the bad dialogue and depressant numbing character.. but this is a serious strory. Its a universe where the world is on the brink of extinction trying to survive and manage a virus created by the government for biological weapons creates a great theme of conspirisist themes. That is a serious story and it wouldnt have the same effect with a lighter character. Remember that Alex mercer is a collection of all the memories and bio of every victim he consumes by not even knowing who or what he was. Yes the writers could have put abit more thought into how they approached his character but as a concept the character of Alex Mercer fits the style and feel of the games plot.

This review is everything that I have been saying about this game for years now. I especially appreciate that you brought up the fact that Alex Mercer is a supercompact ball of biomass, though I believe he would likely way several tons if not much more with the amount of biomass he consumes. This being why even when he is just walking around, the ground cracks under his mass.

gotta say my favourite activity in prototype was going into the infected zone and kicking the shit out of zombies all the while keeping the masquerade. I just loved the mental image of blackwatch n shit coming over to see this one marine guy ninja kick zombies 6 feet into the air. what I find weird is running up buildings doesn't reveal you, but slow climbing up the building reveals you instantly, which I think it really shouldn't, punching footholes into the building as you're climbing it reveals but running straight up the empire state building kicking footholes into it at 30 mph shouldn't be less suspicious.

yeah, it took me about half the game to find out you even could climb up walls the slow way, although it's worse than the run in every way so it's kinda useless. maybe they meant for it to be the other way around and it messed up. typos have broken colonial marines' AI they could definitely switch those around.

God damn! I'm very happy to see your comment! I thought I was the only one that used to do this exact thing! I commented on some other guys post saying basically what you said. I used to run around in the infected zones disguised as a marine with the lmg and just dodge and hose down the infected for hours on end. It's especially fun when the hunters come after you and you can just sprint and dodge at insane speeds while peppering the hunters with bullets as all the other marines also shoot at it.

That was a big thing when the two games came out, the originals came out like a month apart from each other so people were always comparing which was the better free roam superhero game. 7 Months late but .. could you elaborate? How would this mechanic work? Like playing soldier until you get to the center of a building, then starting the rampage? Or actually hunting specific people down with sonar like in Prototype2? Or consuming a friend of someone then calling the target to a meeting to kill it?

Honestly, I still prefer P2 in terms of gameplay and attempt at humor. It's one of the few games were I can make giant webs of meat and exploding zombie mines before summoning three angry mutant gorrilla monsters to race up a building and super kill an annoying helicopter, before I tarry off to surf on a body and launch it into a crowd. Yeah, there were some changes that made P1 more appealing in some aspects, but I dunno... the sequel seemed to have a much better gameplay flow. That, and it has some of the funniest scenes in an open world game I've ever seen. you've mentioned the computer scene, but the one that tops that for me is the "kidnap a bunch of racist, classist scientists, listen to their dispicable bullshit, reveal yourself, and then just take the helicopter as high as possible while they beg for mercy, before dropping it like it's hot, screaming in tow"

@acidbass Well, yes and no. It's still different enough to be a sequel, but the core is very pronounced, for sure. Game mechanic changes, tone, story, environment design, all make enough of a different to keep it from being just "the same thing"... As for P2 being an upgrade, that depends on who you ask. I think it is, but some fans prefer the first one.

I say about 50/50. Alex Mercer, while a "cool in concept" character, was both flat as a brick and completely scattered in terms of character consistency. Everything he said was mostly either in a boring monotone or with a gravelly "no indoor voice" as if he were trying to audition for Batman at the time. Even funnier in a terrible way is when he'd go into some sort of moral quandary about whether or not what he's doing is the right thing... while he's driving a tank through thousands of pedestrians, or ripping the face off of the latest in the series of mostly innocent bystanders who know a bit too much for their own good. Personally, Heller was a better protagonist, being consistant, interesting, and isn't overtly complicated for no reason. As cartoony evil as Alex was in 2 (and in the third issue of the comic that lead up to the game), he at least had some character consistency and bravado to his behavior that made it seem like he knew he had all the cards. I won't lie, I was most certainly hoping that P2 would have had a "Kain and Raziel" dynamic, where Heller was in the Raziel role, seeking vengeance and breaking things he's trying to fix, but is ultimately the good guy (mostly), while Alex plays the Kain role, being the massive dickhead with a huge plan and a good manipulator without telling a lie, but is just a well-intentioned extremest, and it mostly trying to stop a much larger, unknown threat.

Yes. I honest to god prefer the meathead Sgt. Heller, who actually has a semblance of a personality, over the inconsistent, edgy, and bland as year old potatoes Mercer from P1. WITH THAT SAID... Mercer is at least somewhat entertaining in P2 as a psychopathic ego-manic (which was, apparently, the original Mercer personality anyway, if you knew the story of P1), and yes, there are a tonne more characters out there that do the "angry dad" personality at LEAST 10x better than Heller. As for Alex Mercer's potential... let's be honest. It wasn't the potential through his characterization, as a bag of dirt has more personality, is more consistent, and likely holds much less gravel to boot. It was the idea, the concept, that a giant lump of sapient super-virus developing a more morally inquisitive mind that made people like you (and I, before P2 came out) want to see Mercer grow as a character. After all, canonically, the real, psychopathic Mercer died. The Blacklight virus just wore his corpse as a mask, and had no memories before then since Mercer's death prior more or less erased them. But the reality is that the writers didn't want or care to expand on the concept of a sapient virus making a new life and siding with mankind. In keeping with the mean-spirited tone of the Prototype Universe, they decided to have "Zeus" lose what little faith in humanity he had, and ultimately go down the path of full blown villain, and bring in a new protagonist (which sucks, as it seemed like the last issue was written rather sloppily just to set up for P2) All I'm saying is, as a protagonist, Heller was better, but only due to his consistency in personality and morality, and in that he was a genuinely entertaining character to watch and play as. In concept, however, he might as well just be any anti-hero human granted super powers, which is somewhat boring. In a perfect world, the comics wouldn't exist and P2 would have gone on to make Mercer (likely keeping the name for Dana's sake) develop as a character for real, introduce Pariah as the main threat, and Activision wouldn't have shat the bed so hard on a series that had potential to be great. But we live in a god damn world where Black Ops 4 is coming out to chase that "battle royal" dick instead. Oh well, at least there's Darksiders 3 and DMC5 coming...

Honestly, that wouldn't be a bad idea, and I know just the female protagonist that could work. She was with us for both games, and probably knows more about Blacklight by this point than anyone ever should: Dana Mercer. She's already established as an ally to Heller in P2 to boot, so it wouldn't be difficult for them to team up one last time. However, I think for consistency sake, I don't think the virus inside Heller should begin killing him, as you suggest that he should sacrifice himself to boost the new protagonist's power (that would just turn the new protagonist into a ticking time bomb). INSTEAD, what if "Zeus", being the psychotically evil shit he was in 2, still exists somewhere deep in Heller's mind and is slowly trying to take over. That could also explain why he'd show up to fight halfway through to boot. Furthermore, if it's Dana that's the protagonist, "Zeus" wouldn't dare try to take over. Thoughts?

I actually really liked the stealth *concept* in prototype (I say concept because like you said, it really wasn't done the best...) but I thoroughly enjoyed clearing out entire bases without ever alerting anyone. I actually really enjoyed a lot of running around as a "civilian" to avoid detection. I really do wish there was more to it though. The fact that you can take any form is a perfect opportunity to let people create a character and run around as you're own person sorta thing. Off that topic, I fully agree that we do need another prototype game, but if there were another one, I don't think I would want it to be too over the top with powers. Powers? Yes. Weird powers? No. As you said, the game is about action and gore, not a comedy. Yes they absolutely do need to add at *least* a *little* humor, but the game isn't supposed to keep us laughing. The characters definitely need a little more personality though. And as an extra little tidbit, just imagine prototype on a new game engine! They could expand the map, really polish up the graphics, and think of the rag doll affects when theirs an explosion or when you throw someone or get hit and recover yourself mid-air? It would be brilliant.

Shit, imagine running around a New York City like in the New Spider-Man. I would love a couple different ways of traversing the environment, maybe you could go from just using parkour to unlocking expanding legs like Pitou in HxH or even using "web" or tendrils to swing around the city, maybe you could make wings of biomass that allow you to fly for a little while. Traversal alone has made me love this game but thinking about the insanity you could bring to the table with sharp shifting and weapons made from Biomass, imagine the possibilities, imagine morphing into a giant beast and just racking havoc as it or maybe for weapons you could morph your legs and arms into long ass blades and you just into a full body assault, running and cutting on all fours. I need to see a modern day Prototype reboot.

as far as the actual game goes though. yes I would like more stealth. Also more powers. and I would like them to bring back Alex Mercer (basically just make it a reboot) I actually really liked Alex. though I think they should give him more character, give him a better sense of humor. And maybe have him voiced by someone like Troy Baker, or Nolan North. Also, as far as who could make it, I think Rockstar would be a good option. GTA 5 is perhaps one of the last great, balls out crazy violent games out there. as much as I love games like The Last Of Us (which is my all time favorite) not all games need to be dark and depressing. It would be fun to see more crazy violent Prototype style games.

Get Radical...or whoever they are now, to program it, and Rockstar to write. Also, I think if we revamp Alex, he should be a chill, laid back, and jovial guy, with a sadistic side that makes Patrick Bateman look like fucking Mahatma Gandhi. Whether a calm smile, or a slasher grin, he should usually be smiling. It would add to both his affability and nightmare fuel factor. Basically, take Piccolo from DBZ Abridged, and Krieg from Borderlands 2, and stuff them in a brain together. If you wanna get serious, draw attention to how it's fucked up. For moments of comedy or catharsis, leave it be. That ought to do it.

[Prototype] is one of the few free roaming super heroes games I actually got into and I think it was due the intense military storyline, I find zombies boring but this game made them interesting and mankind was not overrun which made it more realistic. Our best hope is a Reboot.

I know this is kinda late but I always liked the stealth segments. It kinda reminds you that you are the scariest thing on the fucking planet. This super secure compound and you were able to just waltz right in and they have literally no way of knowing. Solid snake has to his wit and skills to sneak but Alex just becomes them. He and his amalgamation of flesh and memories reshapes him to the point where it is hopeless to find him via normal means. Good luck keeping someone out when literally everyone around you could be him.

Great video. I'd like to see a prototype 3 sometime indeed. However I think that there needs to be a stealth dimension in the game to give contrast to the "violent catharsis". Always going high profile diminishes the impact of the bursts of insane power. You want to give the players the opportunity to choose WHEN, WHERE and HOW to unleash dominating powers and undying vengeance. Also, you're spot on with the charged jumps man.

Regarding the stealth segments of the prototype games, yeah, I would like to see them return, but only if they improve them. As was said, given Mercer's ability to change his cellular construction at will, he could turn into anything. I sense the potential for active camouflage in this game series. Also, yeah, the soldiers' A.I. responded like that of panicked insects. I lost count of how many military bases I completely stealth consumed. Not kidding; I ate the entire bases' staffing and not one of them grew suspicious before I ate them too.

They should have made Prototype 2 about Pariah or some other Gen Tech experiment based off of Pariah instead of making Alex Mercer the main antagonist. That just made the game sooo nonsensical and idiotic! Plus, there is no way in HELL that Heller could have beaten Alex, who has had his abilities longer, has consumed more people, has far more memories from soldiers he has consumed as well as personal experience fighting with his abilities, and had shit tons more biomass at the time of their fight from consuming the Evolved that were with him.

@@TheStatisfiedOne Cross was not Pariah. Pariah was indeed Greene's son but he was and still is being held in some Blackwatch base somewhere. Cross was consumed and replaced by the Supreme Hunter. The Supreme Hunter was not Pariah but something else entirely. It was spawned from the biomass Greene puked up after Alex injected her with something, I think it was the same stuff Cross had injected him with to give him that tumor that locked his abilities but I'm not 100% certain. We never got to actually see Pariah in game.

Its was not a concidence that they mentioned cross not only caught but killed a runner on his own, wich no human could possible do since Runner>>>>hunter>>>>regular infected. Cross also managed to go 1 on 1 with mercer taking blow from a freaking prototype and delivering himself Some to. And that while dont even wearing a gasmask inside a freaking toxic hive mind. The scène where hè was glowing white like mercer was not only to show that cross was infected but that hè has been for days at the base without the scanners going off on him? Wich also brings us back to the point that pariah tested negative for all virusses wich would also mean that indeed the scanners would not work on him. There was also a cutscene where 2 scientists where talking about pariah and then suddenly 2 pictures of cross pops up. The reason why there wasnt literally nothing mentioned about pariah in prototype 2 is because u killed him and mercer was the only bad Guy left. cross was the strongest being in prototype 1, hè took all kind of missiles, tanks, blows from mercer and was barely affected and 1 hit would take 30% of mercers health, Guy literally dodged mercer attacks unlike any infected could and hè was just as fast if not faster then mercer. I really believe if mercer didnt had the help from the army constantly shooting at cross and for mercer to consume the military Guys to gain health, hè wouldve been toast in a Very short time. Thats probably also how hè killed the runner in 2 bluff Arizona. Randall was a fool thinking that cross was loyal to him. Cross was waiting for the right moment to escape and mercer almost helped him do that

Later that thing reformes after Alex defeates it the first time, then moves on to kill, consume, and replace Cross. It then moves on to become the end boss of the game as it tries to kill and consume Alex. It is most certainly NOT Pariah, and neither is Cross or he wouldn't have been killed by this thing and he would have shown to be significantly stronger than he was in the game if he really was Pariah.

Elizabeth green was a Joke compared to him, most people beat him ar easy but hè is a whole other level on hard mode

When you started the Underutilized Ideas, my mind went immediately to the Memory stealing "Power". More like a feature in the games to help propel the plot and more easily hand wave the sudden ability to Fly a Helicopter or Drive a Tank. For me the taking on the Memories of those you killed as well as their appearance was one of the most Underutilized Ideas In Prototype. From this Video I can tell that you feel the exact same as I do but with the Biomass control. Both similarly held back by hardware limitations, as well as time and money(Blame EA). Not to mention both of these Under Utilized powers could be the sole basis of their own respective games. While you're looking for a game that lets you Destroy everything as you changes forms from everything between a Gun, a Tank, a Jet, to a Bladed Pogo stick. I am looking for a game where you can assume the form of your enemies, allies and families, just to mess with them, Or kill them. An In depth memory stealing story driven game. Both with infinite potential, but equally as different from each other on how a game should be made. I doubt any game could hold both, at least not in our lifetime.

AHH YES thank you for this video. Like you I've been playing this game on and off for years. So much fun. If they can't make a sequel at least use the game engine to create a new IP. I'd be down for another Hulk game. They can have a Marvel Rampage game with all the heavy hitters, Hulk, Thing, Juggernaut, Colossus etc.

I loved Prototype. I didn't mind 2 either, and played it probably equally as much as I played and enjoyed 1. I remember calling out sick for work the day the game came out. I was like 23 years old. Couldn't wait to play it. Called out sick, got the game in the morning and grabbed an egg mcmuffin and hash brown on the way home. Ate while I read the instruction manual. Man. I have so many good memories of excitedly reading instruction manuals before starting games. It was like the last bit of anticipation before finally starting the game, and I miss those days.

Forgot the joy of tossing a taxi at a helicopter, or slicing a crowd of civilians into pieces and watching them fall apart.

I thought the second game's greatest weakness above all is that it holds your hand _way_ too much and allows you to be too overpowered; I remember replaying through the game on Insane- something which I usually never do in games, and found that it was barely if at all more difficult than Normal.

One thing I really liked to do in Prototype was transform into a soldier, grab a gun, go to the infected zones and roleplay like an actual human soldier in the apocalypse. It was a fucking blast. I really like to play games "as they shouldn't be played", because a game with a sandbox that allows you to use your creativity to have even more fun, is an ACTUALLY GOOD video game.

Dude, I wrote this Fanfiction that you should really check out. It's called "Prototype of a Loud" (it's on Wattpad.com) I'm not sure if you've ever seen the Nickelodeon show "The Loud House." (it's a cartoon about one boy who lives with 10 sisters) but in my story "Prototype of a Loud" the main character from The Loud House, Lincoln Loud, gets the powers of Alex Mercer. And of course Alex Mercer himself is in the story and becomes Lincoln's mentor. And the main villain is Pariah, who is a character that has been mentioned in the Web of Intrigue of the original game.
