My personal issue with Yasuke is that making him one of the protagonists directly goes against the AC code which is that historical figures only appear as side characters or antagonists. And to be honest, we all know why Ubisoft wanted to make him, one of the few black people in all of Japan, the main character. However, having Yasuke as one of the protagonists is far from gamebreaking to me. In the end I just want to have a good story and a good game overall.

Most people don't hate AC shadow for the historical accuracy. It's an historical fiction, the historical environment serves as the theme. Most people hate AC for the price ($70 - $130) and season pass in a freaking single player game.
@revbladez57735 ай бұрын
That is false. Expansions and season passes are in most games these days. People tend to be very selective when complaining about it, to the point that it is basically double standards. For instance, Elden Ring cost 60 dollars on release but would cost 70 dollars now due to universal 10 dollar raise of launch prices for all games. Now it is getting a 40 dollar DLC. That would be 110 dollars, the same as as AC Shadows Gold Edition, which includes the season pass. You either complain about both or neither. To complain about one and not the other is double standards. But because Elden Ring is an universally beloved game while Ubisoft is a company that is cool to hate, a lot tend to go with the double standards. Sure, AC Shadows still has the 130 dollar ultimate edition. But the only thing it has that the gold edition does not is the ultimate pack, which largely only includes cosmetic stuff. So you really do not miss much by not buying that.

One of the reasons for the controversy is the definition of "samurai" is ambiguous. Originally it referred to lower-ranking nobles who made their living by the martial arts to serve higher-ranking nobles, but during the Warring States period, when the status system was ambiguous, it came to refer to a relatively higher-ranking combatant with the right qualification for mounted combat, and during the Edo period it again became a hereditary status. Considering that Yasuke's surname is not documented, it is unlikely that he held such a high status, and given that he wasn't killed by Akechi Mitsuhide after Oda Nobunaga's death and was sent to Nanbanji Temple, it is likely that he did not participate in the battle that much. However, the definition of "samurai" in English is even more ambiguous, and could be anyone who worked in a combat position in medieval Japan. In Japanese, "bushi" is close to this definition.

We've never played a historical character, so I ain't sure why you implied we have. We play fictional characters with the occasional historical npc we come into contact with. That's how it's been from the getgo. And them said protagonists we play as are born in the said country/city they were born in. Connor got his in America, Basim got his in the middle east, Jacob and Evie Frye got theirs in UK, Ezio got his in Italy and so forth. And now suddenly we're playing a 6ft+ historical African black man who is representing a huge part of Japan's history and culture despite him literally only staying in Japan for a short time. The hate does make perfect sense. Folks just wanted to play a Japanese samurai who is also an assassin. That has been asked for time and time again since AC2. Folks have no issue with Yasuke, the communities issue is the fact a black african man is representing a huge part of Japans culture and history. It's the equivalent of making an African empire based assassin creed and having the main protagonist a white guy from Europe. No one wants to be a white guy from Europe when the game is set in a completely different country. Especially when all of their prior assassin creed games have had the made assassins fight the templars in the city/country they were born in. IMO, Ubisoft should've made Yasuke a side character in the game who you occasionally work with. And take inspiration from Yasuke and make a game set during the age of African empires. Or if they're that desperate to use Yasuke as a protagonist (not shocking when you look at the team behind the game) then have Yasuke be the equilvemnt of Basim in Valhalla. A side character who happens to be following leads in Japan for a year. Then the next game can be Yasuke heading back to an African empire. Overall, I don't intend to buy the game because Ubisoft have been doing bad business practices lately. Ain't buying a game I can lose the ability to play in a decades time. Though I have to disagree with you. The hate makes perfect *sense* . So much so even black people reviewing the trailer aren't happy. My reason for my sarcastic comment above, is I’m frustrated how every game that comes out seems to have a lot of negative controversy that just seems like pointless drama to me and doesn’t really speak to whether the game is good and fun. I’ll give you an example, I was watching the reveal trailer for shadows on premiere night on JorRaptor’s stream (a KZbinr I watch for assassin’s creed related content). The amount of people who reacted in such an angry negative way the moment Yasuke appeared and started typing the word ‘woke’ without any thinking to it is the type of pointless drama that I’m expressing sarcasm and annoyance of in the comment above. This was before anything that Ubisoft did related to the Wikipedia of Yasuke or any inaccuracies related to Japanese culture or history. As for your general commentary around Ubisoft disrespecting Japanese culture. Everyone has to remember, the Japanese aren’t a hive mind that all think the same way. Just like you and me having different points of view on different topics, the Japanese are the same way. Some Japanese people will feel disrespected and some won’t. Assuming what you’ve written about the Shinobi is correct. You’re definitely valid to feel annoyed at Ubisoft for the reasons you mentioned. Can you though despite whether you agree or disagree with me understand where my frustration is coming from? Anyway enjoy the rest of your day.

My personal issue is the AC games straying further from playing as an assassin. Odyssey had no mention of the assassins and had us play as Demigods. Valhalla had assassins in the game but had us play as a Viking. They finally have the opportunity to focus solely on creating an epic shinobi experience but throw in another playable Samurai who couldn’t be any further from an assassin. It’s like Ubisoft is scared of committing to making a stealth-focused game.

Ahmalik _Yaaz But why not start the controversy then, why start it when there's a black face? Looks to me like if anyone wanted to rage about it not being about assassins they should have done it when they had the blond vikings you mentioned doing open battle. They have ninjas in this, so it looks like they're going back to the assassin theme. But either way, all I know is I'm getting this no matter what to push back on the racists. It doesn't deserve to suffer because of things other games did and because some bigots are upset

Who cares if there was like the ONE person in 500 years or whatever length it was who was black in Japan. Is it representative of their culture, their society, etc.? That's the main point. Regardless of the nitty gritty history of this particular individual, elevating such a person to main protagonist status is just insulting to the culture it's supposed to be portraying, and it's hard to take seriously as an audience member. If you hadn't told me otherwise, I wouldn't have believed such a person even existed, because it's quite ludicrous. I do think the online outrage over this is also over-bloated and excessive, but then it's the internet, what do you expect? Still, Ubisoft shot themselves in the foot. Why ruin such a great setting and AC game that fans have been waiting for with such a stupid DEI move?

What's wrong with them using that as a chance to represent black people as well? It's not like anyone is going to think japanese culture is suddenly black culture, or that japanese people don't get any representation. The controversy is not about racist gamers, historical accuracy, retainers or samurais, blacks or asians. If this same game was released 10 years ago, pretty much no one would have minded because AAA studios still had a decent reputation amongst their customers. But in the past 10 years, companies such as Ubisoft have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into instilling in the public concise that white kids dressing up as native americans for Halloween is wrong. That a white person playing an asian musical instrument(despite being one of the few remaining people alive playing that instrument) for Ghost of Tsushima is wrong. If they do, it's just giving more power to Ubisoft. It's a clear choice between the 70 or the 18 a month with you buying the DLC later on. (I'll be waiting for a wait a sale or a slight discount) This outline being exactly like Outlaws is clearly Ubisofts strategy going forward. I'm sure they did it for Avatar FOP too. First, the switch to an historical character as the main protagonist plus the rpg elements means this game is even further away from the premise of the original games, that we were reliving a hidden past trough the animus. Second, its deeply embeded in ideology. Ubi has aleady made games with black protagonists (Liberation and Freedom Cry) and even one with two african protagonists (Origins). But at the first oportunity to make a game based in Asia they race swap the protagonist, even knowing that's not what the fans wanted at all. Its especially ridiculous given the success of Ghost of Tsushima, the japanese Assassin's Creed we all wanted. And don't forget the LGBTQP part. AC is all about History while playing with it to create unique interactions and stories that otherwise didn't happen. Who'd of thought. Yasuke instead upholds what they've done as we see various historical figure inclusions like: Leonardo Da Vinci: nobody complained that he helped Ezio nlt only repair and modify the Hidden Blade twice but he also studied the Apple of Eden too. He was a major supporting figure in a otherwise finctional plot but he's okay tobdo so. George Washington: at the forefront of AC3 where he allies himself with Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor) who protects him from Charles Lee. In the DLC George Washington finds an Apple of Eden. It gave him a nightmarish vision of what would happen if he were crowned king of the United States with its power in his possession, and so he passed the Apple to Connor for it to be disposed of. The DLC goes into detail of what would happen it was called "The Tyranny of King Washington". Again no one batted an eye on how they altered history here. Jack the Ripper: Need I say more...his murder's are justified as became disillusioned with the Order, they weren't prostitutes they were assassins disguied as prostitute's. Cleopatra: making a final request to Aya to take her son Caesarion away from Egypt and train him as a Hidden One. Thats NOT FREAKING REAL.

Like Sudan for example; why Sudan? Look up the Kingdom of Kush, the Kushites; Kush was a kingdom in northern Africa in the region corresponding to modern-day Sudan. The larger region around Kush (later referred to as Nubia) was inhabited c. 8,000 BCE. The Kushites are Black and they were mighty Warriors and also the first Black Pharaohs. Here is a little more in a video from Discovery Channel youtube video, "Discovering A 2500-Year-Old Ushabti Of A Kushite King in Sudan | Expedition Unknown." The Kushites are more real than Yasuke The First Black (Fake) Samurai! -AC is not historically accurate, well that is why you are 80% right with 20% wrong. Why, because has someone who plays Assassin’s Creed a lot, 80% is true history(Historically Accurate) while 20% is fiction. Why is that? 20% is fiction because certain people, places, items, objects, and interactions never took part in the 80% of true history, and again why? There has to be a mix of fiction to blend in with the video game and make it fun, and have cool aspects. Meaning, mixing the 20% fiction with the 80% true history, you get an interesting story along with understanding history.

As a Black man, all I ever see from these gamers is outrage fueled by their own racism. I remember them being pissed when a Harlem Hellfighter was featured on the cover of Battlefield 1. Even their "gamer talk" is the closeted racism that they can't say out in public. This is the same crowd that will get on a mic, call you a slur, then tell you to get a thicker skin when you complain about it. But now they're in their feelings over ONE of the protagonists being a Black man. They refuse to even aknowledge Naoe, and honestly, they're not a big fan of strong women at all.
@Gilsao157Ай бұрын
Naoe weighs 90lbs has the blandest of androgynous faces and is a board both front and back and I live by the words of Sir Mix-a-Lot, specially if I am going to look at her behind for hours. Hence Naoe is so good at her stealth that even players forget she exists. As for Yasuke, imagine a marvel Black Panther game where the Black Panther is the only asian that are in Wakanda and that only appeared in three boards of an obscure comic. That's the feeling of the gamers, specially the japanese ones. AC in Japan? All protagonists are japanese and that's it.

Want black characters and black history them go find where they are. Ethiopia until WW2 was the only african never colonized, be it by europeans or africans. It has a history that spam from the first century. Some of the oldest texts of judaism and christianism were only preserved by the ethiopians. Now can you stop trying to convince us to play the mess of the character you did to the saga? Now the problem i see in these vids is victimizing because no one wants to play as a MINORITY LOSER. This setting was being asked for a long time. Mostly because the stealth and culture allowed for a perfect game, in fans' opinion. But now Ubi presented the fans with a big, burly, foreign menace in a game known for stealth. Yasuke, historically, stuck like a sore thumb. He wasn't an outcast... unfortunately, he was seen more like John Blackthorne is in Shogun. And AC is known to be an history based game. Even has historical modes. Of course it never was 100% accurate, but this feels excessively forced. Playing an historic main character (which isn't the norm in main AC games), an african in Sengoku's Japan, an hero without stealth... feels very forced. Like pushing an agenda. It gets criticism because people see it behind the curtain. Ghost of Tsushima is far from historically accurate and made by americans, but it did great

The thing that got me the most is that, following the Assassin’s Creed format, the protagonists are always 'locals.' Ezio is Italian, Eivor is Norse, Kassandra is Greek, Altaïr is Arab, and Connor is Native American. My problem isn’t that Yasuke is Yasuke, but that protagonist isn’t a Japanese male. I think having Yasuke in the story would be fine, but as a important to the plot character, maybe someone who helps us gather information or something like that. Imagine playing a game set in Africa and playing as a White character, killing Black people, with a similar story involving a White historical figure who lived in Africa. It's not what people hoped for or expected; it's disappointing.

This channel does the game justice. Also I think it’s super cool that Yusuke is a really cool character to play as and ever since I Learned that he was a real historical figure back during Covid in 2020 I always wanted a game about samurai like ghost of Tsushima to involve him. Not about him but involve him, even if it was a cameo. I would also like to see Oda Nobunaga, and “Toyotomi Hideyoshi” ( The great unifier of Japan, and last but certainly not least the “Date Masamune” (the helper to “Toyotomi Hideyoshi”. I think this new game is super cool and I can’t wait. Let’s do this 🎉

Ok, but just because it’s historically accurate doesn’t mean Ubisoft didn’t do it to appeal to diversity quotas. Yasuke being historically accurate is merely convenient and a great excuse to plug him in the game. I don’t care that it’s historically accurate. If I play a game in feudal Japan, I want to get fully immersed in the world. And playing with a black character doesn’t really help in that regard. It would be much better if it was a Japanese male, which would not only be historically accurate, but also far more representative of the time and setting. It’s also not a coincidence that the only other protagonist just so happens to be a woman too. KZbinrs such as yourself doing mental gymnastics to defend such decisions is just making the problem worse in my opinion.

1:25 False. Nobunaga liked unusual and eye-catching things, and he liked Yasuke's appearance so much that he bought him from Valano in 1581. According to records, Yasuke was given an ornate small knife like women carried for self-defense, a place to live, and a salary to serve Nobunaga. Nobunaga was also "served" by people who did household chores like cleaning, cooking, and laundry. These servants were also given rooms in the tenements in the castle to live in, and received a salary. But they were not samurai. And like them, Yasuke was NOT a samurai either. If Yasuke had been considered a samurai, or if he had been the “strongest samurai”, Akechi Mitsuhide would not have let Yasuke live.
