I had a similar experience with barn owls as a kid as your granddad, except our barn owl roosted in our attic! It was a week before we found it beforeit kept flying out when it heard us climb the later. Thankfully, we got someone to capture and relocate it.

See this is the thing about being in a desert now. Sure rodents might get in your attic but they are not nearly as intrusive as freaking barn cats, other peoples chickens and surely not owls!!

So, Barred Owls aren't invasive the way you'd think. While not initially in the Pacific Northwest they DID fly there on their own which is a natural process. It's just that the shifting climate and human tree planting put forests in the grassland that had been serving as a barrier. Also, a spotted owl is basically the same thing as a barred owl. They look almost identical. So it's guaranteed that shooting up barred owls results in some serious friendly fire.

The owl that changes its shape drastically is a White Faced Scops. It's a personal favourite of mine. Often also called the transformer or vampire owl.

Fun fact: In my state a father and daughter team had a renaissance style castle built where they will be holding various workshops, ren fairs, and you can even stay the night...it's name? Owl Castle...but in German. It's only about an hour or less from where I live (depending on traffic) I'm gonna go see it at some point after it's been open awhile...it LITERALLY opened for business late last year. Also the whole thing about being compared to a German Shepard bite? People who describe that are probably people who rehab owls or are falconers who deal with birds of prey and thus have a VERY good idea of what an owl's grip is like.

Well, I run almost exclusively on metered internet connections and do not have a steady nine to five that pays enough to afford a time based internet subscription. There's a town in northern Serbia called Kikinda, with hundreds of long eared owls roosting on trees in the local park. I just checked and at one point there were 145 birds on one tree! I heard that the explanation why there are so many of them is that they probably roosted there before humans came, and than the town just grew around their natural habitat.

I’ve been grabbed by an owl and couldn’t use my middle finger properly for over a week because its talon went really close to one of my knuckle joints. It was a great horned owl. I volunteer and intern at a raptor center so lots of bird injuries. But to be fair most of those injuries were my fault and not severe. Basically any one who works with wild animals will agree that a majority of their injuries were not the fault of the animal but the fault of themselves.
