Glenn Wilson, a cheerleader with Down syndrome, says he was removed from his high school's cheerleading squad because he didn't fit the school's image. Glenn is male, biracial and openly gay. When Glenn's Uncle Ray asked whether that played a role in his dismissal, the coach's answer shocked him. Ray said Glenn was offered a manager's position, which he turned down. InsideEdition.com's Keleigh Nealon ( / keleighnealon ) has more. #InsideEdition

XD Agree! They played games instead of being straight up about it. I think there would have been less hurt if they had just been honest with themselves(knowing he's not a good fit and not giving in by "faking inclusivity" by letting him particpate at all) and the individuals in question( explaining their opinion and being transparent with the kid and his family).

Its also why the teacher should have been forthcoming and transparent from the start. She would have been liable if that child or another was hurt even during the times the kiddo was included. As a person with special needs it is not the exclusion but the cover up and "faking it for clout" that is the issue.

Issue is timing of when she decided to tell the truth. The coach actually contradicted herself by letting this kid participate at all when she knew there liabilities for her own limitations in not being able to handle kids with special needs and knowing the kiddo's skills were not the best. He looks like such a sweetheart, but if the coach isn't qualified to work with special needs children, why force it? At least the coach is being honest about it. It takes a lot of time and patience, on top of that, love and care to be able to help and work with a special needs child. I wouldn't want my child with special needs to be in a room with someone who isn't qualified to take care of them. Plain and simple. If you're not going to show love to them, I'll take my child else where and move on.

I agree with you, but the coach should of been more tactful with her words, and told his family why he was being removed instead of ghosting him. I get it. he’s disabled, but she’s seems quite brash about the “image” standards, and impudent about the situation. And, if she wasn’t trained nor prepared to handle Glenn’s special needs then she should of not let him on the team in the first place. Common sense. I think she did it because she was afraid she’d get backlash if she didn’t let him on the team. Her mistake.

We had to do the same when I worked at the YMCA. Our manager had the training/expertise to take care of special needs children, but we didn’t. She was also a manager so she couldn’t help during the entire shift with just one specific child. The breaking point was when he climbed a cabinet about 6-8 feet in the air. We couldn’t reach him and eventually one of our male colleagues was able to catch him. It was very scary. Our manager had to tell the child’s mom that we weren’t equipped with the resources to take care of him. I personally felt like a failure but it was what was best for him. He needed someone to watch him 1 on 1 not be in a group of children where our attention can be diverted easily. Maybe he can join a recreational league of some sort? I wish him the best!
