As someone who has never done parkour but is now hooked on watching it, climb-ups are one of my favourite things to watch. I don't know how anyone could under-appreciate them. Seeing someone effortlessly ascend a building is a thing of absolute beauty.

Well most people don't often try to climb up walls, so they kind of forget how goddam hard it is. I mean they know it is hard and that they can't do it, but they don't know *how* hard.

This was the FIRST movement I was truly blown away by. I happened on a bunch of young parkour enthusiasts. I was 41/42 at the time but as an adventurous youngster who climbed everything, recognised the skill and strength needed. It started my journey of 'playing' again. Never quite got the climb-up but managed a slow level 2 occasionally . So much joy and great friends made, I'm forever grateful for this journey :D

By speaking to Laurent from the Yamakasi in my time I was in Evry, I can say that there is another reason for "throwing a forearm onto or over the wall": It's safer against slipping. There is more surface and bodyweight already over the wall and your torso is closer to the wall. This is not always needed or possible, but for relatively small to medium jumps over very high gaps, it's just more sensical.
@zwenkwiel816

Makes sense, Kind of feel like the Yamazaki guys kind of had a different philosophy then a lot of modern parkour athletes. More practical or something. Like you wouldn't really see them do these weird back and forth runs with a bunch of flips you often see today. Like that stuff is good practice but a proper run should go from point A to point B as efficiently as possible. Also a lot of their stuff was a more focused on rooftops instead of chest high walls in parks and shit.

I was always on the edge about even attempting some of the stuff that I thought interesting and now I'm set on this. And when I say that I was on the edge I meant it for a few years now I wasn't even sure. I wasn't really one of the people who wanted to do all the flashy stuff I wanted to learn the correct techniques to do things like climb ups. This is going to take a few years but at least I'm said all my goal of getting to at least a level four climb up.

Thank you so much for this video! The climb up is my first (and almost only) skill in parkour (for 4 years). The arbitrary bonus is that they are so nonchalant and unnoticeable that they don't seem dangerous or too taxing to bystanders. I'm truly obsessed with climb ups indeed and would like just to master them and only them. I don't very much like expressive or flashy moves (pretty much anything other than climb ups, vaults, and safety rolls), but I can tell that they need skill.

Nice one Jimmy! Climb geek here! Always loved them and drilled them religiously since way before anyone talked about "levels" in climb ups. One thing habit we always made sure people had from early on in Melbs is that every time you do an arm jump, you should climb up. There is no point just hitting an arm jump and then just dropping down unless it makes sense in a line you're doing. So with that attitude and then working on them in isolation, there's no excuse to not be good at them after a while. I might have a crack at this level 5 thing...should be able to get it, will tag you when I do ;)

Training climb ups in Parkour has helped my climbing enormously. I often easily top out on the last move where other climbers really struggle. Hi Jimmy! Please make videos interviewing some old school guys. You’ve mentioned Teghead in this video. He was a great inspiration for me more than 10 years ago. One of my favorite videos from him is that one with Tobby Segar yet very young. Some like Teg have just disappeared and I wonder how nice would be to know all the reasons and what they are doing now. I’ve doing parkour since 2007, really great times since then. However, it’s annoying how I’m now a 31 years old guy (with a daughter and working/studying a lot) and around me only few tracers have survived. In general, I can now only practice with guys under the age of 18, which is sometimes kind of disappointing due to mentality differences. John from Brazil! A huge fan of your important, great and hard work. Congrats!

That's basically a muscle up. You go from pull up to a straight bar dip.

I think the advantage of a level 5 climb up is that as you’re not moving you’re head forward and flicking your heel, technically you could do it of a crimp and then jump off it or 180 or something.

I think this is also a move nobody ever talks about but is one of the big hurdles for beginners. So thx for sharing this vid.

I know this won't sound related, you'll just have to trust me. One "niche" group that should VERY well understand the difficulty, a group who all stand around and watch..then CHEER wildly if the attempt is successful, is when a person who's never mounted a decent size horse from the ground, no saddle, no step, no assist. Just get on the horse's back while it stands still (a training effort in itself). I took me a full minute of very unattractive struggle to get atop my first horse bareback. He stood 15.3 hands high (4" equals one "hand"). Everyone clapped and cheered me on. Then a few years later, I had a horse foot taller. The day I got onto her bareback, no saddle or any type of assist, we took off and loped around the ring a few times. It's tremendous fun. Anytime an actor runs and jumps onto a saddle-less horse I look to see if his feet were hidden and he used a gymnastics board..or if the horse was small. Anyway.. I know how hard it is to pull up onto the back of big a horse and I WOULD cheer ANYONE who could climb that height with essentially their arms. (Can't use your feet on a horse..it'd get mad that you are hurting it).

To me, learning the climb up would be actually fun to see just how fast i can climb a wall or something. Idc about the cool flips and stuff as much because i just wanna see how fast can i go, not how cool can i look. I like the "practical" over the "fancy"

Dope vid!😄 Also can you do a video like how to start parkour, basic jumps and stuff like that for total begginers? A month ago I didn't knew anything about parkour but now I can't stop watching your videos🤤😍

I think climb-ups are actually amazing. When you see someone use it to climb a tall wall or a building, it's like achieving the impossible! I would love to have that super power, but I'm really a spectator with no parkour skills. I actually used the linked tutorial before. I probably failed because it felt like something impossible for me, I don't have parkour skills, and I didn't try it much. Maybe I should try again.

im still not very good at them, think its because im not used to being in the hanging position still because most of the training i've done has been focused on vaulting and footwork but i recently started being able to do climb ups for the first time in my life. felt great to actually be able to do them
