It’s funny how all comments are just jokes! I live around this lake as does my whole family and everyone who matters for me (and millions of other people). I see it every day as I cross the Rwanda-Congo border every day to go to work. I swim in it every weekend. It’s the best lake to swim in: no crocs, no hippos, no nothing dangerous except this damn gas we know is waiting there! What else to tell you is that there is an active volcano right next to the lake and it seems the inevitable is looming. Really nice scenery for sure, beautiful landscape but all over this place there is real danger with volcanic eruptions from time to time, permanent thermal water, etc. The funny thing is to stop it all the gas need to be extracted big time and the people around the lake would definitely benefit from it in terms of energy production.

I wonder if pumps in the lake could stop the pressure from building up. Imagine a pump at the bottom of the lake that pushes water from the bottom up to the surface, like a water fountain in a park. This would stop the CO2 from building because it would constantly vent at the top so there would be no explosion and massive release of CO2 that can displace oxygen from the air.
@scotthenderson2923 жыл бұрын
I've been to Lake Kivu on the Rwandan side. Off topic, it's gorgeous. And the people there were super nice. It's not just CO2 that builds up. It's methane and natural gas. And yes, Rwanda has partnered with some European gas industries to builld a state of the art, brand new type of gas plant which siphons the methane and natural gas directly from the lake water. They say it makes helps remove pressure and also gives them pretty reliable energy source. Hopefully it don't blow up. It's gorgeous
@yespls62602 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what they did at Lake Nyos in Cameroon after the catastrophe in 1986. There is a pump that is designed to relieve pressure building up, just like a fountain.. I believe that the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance partially funded this pump, which has been very successful at degassing the lake. Something like this is desperately needed at Lake Kivu as it affects many, many more people-- though the project is much larger and more expensive. Also, in the case of Kivu, the issue is more a need to extract methane than CO2. It has been done to a degree at this lake, but the companies involved need to widely expand their capacity for it to be effective.

Let's be real! Yes, it is Africa, BUT they're not THAT poor as many of you think. All of the 2 million people could hold up 5 bucks for this cause. They just don't care. Africans are pretty laid back and if you'd ask about this topic they'll smile about it and say it's nature's / God's will and who are they to interfere. Come up with a cheap way to do it and that could work. How do you puncture a soda can and extract all the co2 in a controlled manner? This is also not a soda can, it's water. I have a suggestion, forecasting! Build a network of CO2 level sensors and pressure sensors at certain intervals around the lakes. You could install buoys anchored to the lake-bottom, they could be solar-powered using solar panels installed on the above-water portion of the buoys. Each buoy would have long cables that reach varying depths depending on the position of the buoy. At different depths along these cables you would have sensors taking readings of water pressure and CO2 concentrations (these types of sensors already exist and are widely used). Each buoy could also be equipped with long-wavelength radio transmitters which would allow all of the data to be collected in near-real-time. The construction and deployment of these solar-powered sensor-buoys would be *far* *cheaper* than building extremely huge CO2-venting tubes at fixed locations all around the bigger of the two lakes. These pressure-venting tubes have to reach the deep bottom parts of the lakes and require constant maintenance due to them handling large temperature and pressure gradients along the tubing. Sensor-buoys would be much less expensive since they're not moving gases through tubes. At the same time as the buoy-sensor network is being developed, the local governments should start up a multi-national lake-monitoring and lake condition-prediction and forecasting scientific research team with a dedicated lake-forecasting office. The scientists they hire can then use algorithmic software models to analyze the sensor data on a daily basis. If the lake's CO2 and pressure levels start rising suddenly or at an accelerating rate, the scientists monitoring it could probably see trends in the data well in advance of the explosion occurring and send messages and warnings to the local governments and peoples. Having the ability to monitor conditions in the lakes over long time periods would allow the regions to be evacuated safely and well in advance of an explosion event.

And then what? We're not talking about a few small farming villages here. We're talking about _millions_ of refugees that would all be trying to escape at once, and where do you move that many people? If they could just up and move 2 million people en masse they'd do it right now instead of waiting and hoping their sensors give them enough advanced warning to start construction.

All they need to do is put a cooling-rod in the lake. This will punch a hole in the thermocline of the water (the boundary layer between the hot part of the water and cold water below), allowing the gas in the cold layer to come out of solution gradually and dissipate into the atmosphere whenever the cooler is turned on. Given the volume of the lake, this will not affect it's temperature, but it will increase fish-stocks from all the nutrients that can now cross the thermocline into the higher water column where algae can grow.

What about a fountain? A single fountain with an inlet tube extending down roughly 250 to 300 meters (just over half the depth) that shoots water straight up about 7 to 10 meters. It should release the CO2 and methane in quantities manageable by the local atmosphere and mix new oxygen in at the surface without further action afterwards. It may not make the lake 100% safe from this event, but it should reduce the risk with very minimal cost. Could even make it solar powered so no need to run high voltage cabling through the water and it is just a floating fountain (anchored of course).

Following on Dean Kinzie, once the oxygen is depleted, the algae start to die and the anaerobic microbes flourish. They will produce waste gases like methane and hydrogen sulfide. That will cause a massive deadly gas release once the saturation point is exceeded.
@seviregis74414 жыл бұрын
I have a few questions: (1) are they able to monitor the CO2 concentration as a volatility indicator? (2) do lightning strikes pose an explosion risk? (3) is there any way to "mechanically" break the CO2 down into C + O2 although high pressure O2 is also volatile. (4) is there a volcano underneath, because if so, it will always be unstable
@reddwarfer9992 жыл бұрын
Carbon dioxide isn't in itself toxic or poisonous. It's the displacement of oxygen from the atmosphere that kills you.
@VersusARCH6 жыл бұрын
Genius, you forgot to mention the absolutely key ingredient that makes the accumulation of CO2 possible - other than to have a source of gas, the lake has to be meromictic - which means there is no shifting of deep vs shallow water layers over the year's seasons (most of the lakes have that shifting, but some in specific climates where winters are hotter than the bottom layers do not, and Monoun, Nyos and Kivu are among them).

using data from the lakes that previously "erupted" along with the evidence of a mass extinction event they should calculate the death radius of the lake and then evacuate it and close off the surrounding area maybe designating it a wildlife sanctuary where they can study an ecosystem cutoff from humans and they could just use it for energy production like they already do

First of all if there was a way to create a release valve of sorts emitting small amounts over time it may be able to reduce the amount of gas that is dissolved in the lake. Also, if there was a way to create a different chemical that was more stable or making another chemical that physically rises to the surface to be skimmed off it would be good.
