I'm wondering what was actually on the ships to warrant them being maintained for 8 long years. Surely that was a massive loss to the company involved. But then again, I guess in hindsight that's obvious but the people actually living through this event thought the situation would clear up after just a few months... and after the first few years it was just a matter of sunken cost fallacy... no pun intended

Wars are the stupidest thing people have come up with. People literally died there. Lost their lives and no one knows what happens after death. They just died because of some stupid disagreements between some royal losers and it wasn't even their fault. Imagine what the world would be like without wars. Maybe technology would be already 1000 years worth of advancements higher and problems like pollution and global warming wouldn't exist. So... If you ever happen to be the leader of a country just remember: in a war no one really wins, everyone are the losers

More than likely German work ethics in not growing complacent and letting their ship's maintenance routines slip, Germans being very efficient at whatever they set their mind to is a stereotype for a reason. I imagine other crews kind of gave up on the thought of getting the ships out someday and instead knew they would just be flown off, whereas the Germans took their duty seriously and kept their ships in tip-top condition.

Israelis once intentionally fired missiles into an American destroyer in the Mediterranean as a false flag operation to try to get the US engaged in their war. The US side found out it was the Israel who had attacked them but did nothing and Israel remains the US's closest ally in the Middle East.

@Haren94 The Liberty wasn't an American destroyer. It started life as a Victory class cargo ship named Simmon Victory in World War Two. The Navy bought it in 1963 to use as a technical research ship. Why would the Navy buy a cargo ship to use as a technical research ship? Because a "technical research ship" is a spy ship and would fit in perfectly with other cargo ships. When I was young, my family knew a crewman that was there during the attack. He was a radio operator. They were told to leave the room so that civilians could use their radios. This was just before the attack. If you knew what they were using the radios for, you'd know why Israel attacked. The United States knew why the Israelis were attacking and knew that they'd stop after the radio traffic stopped. This is why no one was allowed to go to its aid during the attack. The United States is happy in accepting the "case of misidentify" from the Israelis so that they don't have to admit what they were doing. The Israelis had four jets and three torpedoe boats. They could have sank it if they wanted to.

What you have is (although that can be partly debated) the best army, navy and air force atm. However why be scared? If your reasons are just according to the UN-Regulations then the US can't do anything about it without looking like total dickheads and getting themselves into quite a bit of trouble. Considering that it also imports more than it exports that makes it clear that economic sanctions are the way to go, while the size of your economy also makes economical warfare quite appealing. That is the reason why we will not see any large scale war involving the U.S. or any of the big countrys for that matter unless a totally clueless egocentric shortsighted egodriven twat would be in total command.
