The sinking of the Sultana will go down as one of the worst maritime tragedies in US history, but it's a disaster that is often over looked for the more popular sinking ship story, the Titanic. The Sultana was a horrific disaster, but why isn't this a story worthy of a movie being made after it?

A tip from an "Economic Marine Science" student even though 90% of the Internet will confuse it, "tonnage" is actually used to measure a ship's potential cargo *vollume* not weight, the word you are looking for at 1:57 is "displacement" which refers to the amount/weight of the water displaced by a ship "straight out of the factory" (which is the same as the ships weight)

The biggest reason that people still are fascinated by the sinking of the RMS Titanic is due to her being a luxury liner with many of the day's riches celebrities on board, many of which were among those lost. It's because it was her maiden voyage in my uneducated opinion. I think the RMS Empress of Ireland is a lot more tragic in the fact that it was sunk in 14 minutes. Not fascinating considering it sank in a river after being rammed while steaming ahead in a blinding fog just minutes after picking up its Passengers.

Many people seem to have had a relative on the Sultana. On my Mother's side, my 2nd Great Grandfather, Lewis Wolf McCrory was indeed aboard the Sultana that fateful night and survived. A Union Soldier Prisoner of War, he had been released from Andersonville prison in March 1865, and w/hundreds of others, early on April 27th put aboard the Sultana. Thrown into the river by the violent explosion, he was in the water for hours before barely making it to shore.

EL Plagua they called her PRACTICALLY Unsinkable. Meaning Virtually or Almost Unsinkable. This was because of the compartment design in the hull. If 4 compartments were punctured, the ship would stay afloat. If memory serves me right though, the iceberg punctured 5-6 compartments, meaning that Titanic was doomed. The crew and designers, even Captain Edward Smith knew that Titanic was not ENTIRELY Unsinkable. They knew about how the ship would do in a BEST CASE SCENARIO. The minute the crew inspected the damage and saw compartment 5 flooded, they knew there was no hope for Titanic unless a ship could make it in time, and as any Titanic enthusiast would know, the closest ship was 4 hours away, even at top speed. They knew she was going to be long gone by that time. Thomas Andrews knew the ship more than anyone onboard, and he knew her limits. THEY KNEW! People love to over exaggerate things, especially when the Yellow Press gets involved. The only ones who knew Titanic’s true limits was her crew and designers. The passengers knew nothing other than “This is a big ship, how can anything sink it” because the majority of them knew nothing about how ships worked.

And because the Mississippi has changed course since the disaster, she sank at a point that is now normally-dry land more than two miles from the usual river channel. A completely random Daily Mail article spoke about that, and that's how I know of Sultana.

The notoriety of the Titanic was that people called it the “Unsinkable”- and then in its maiden voyage it sunk. It was like if we made the perfect space ship that could go to and from Mars and the entire country was excited and we sent 2000+ people on it’s maiden voyage because it was unsinkable- and 700 of them made it home. It’s infamous

The sultana did carry cargo, but the sultana was a luxurious paddlwheeler. It was the 4th ship of the same name the previous had all met a I'll fate. When the sultana left overloaded several ship still docked was leaving with only a handful of troops, one leaving with none . Newspaper were also bribed to keep negative stories out of the headlines by steamship owners because of the common place of boiler explosions. There is a really good PBS documentary narrated and produced by Sean astin (rudy/mikey from goonies) the documentary goes into great detail about events leading up to the disaster and the lives of survivors after.

Sultana actually had an interesting life during the civil war. It was not the first time she had carried soldiers. At first it was meant to be a passenger and cargo boat. She was a part of the “Elite” class of Steamboats. These were also called “Wedding Cake” boats, because of both their luxury and comfort and the way the boats looked. This was a service that it only served for about a year or so until the civil war started causing problems for the railroad, as railways were often destroyed during battles. The steamboats started taking soldiers up and down the river more and more often, which meant more and more steamboats would be needed for the job. Sultana was out under contract to do this by her captain, because Mason was already going broke before his boats final and fateful voyage had started. He was so broke, that he sold the Sultana to 4 other people, and he had the least amount of ownership on the boat after doing this. There were trips up and down the river that had resulted in the boat being hit by cannons from confederate soldiers. While the boat was not heavily damaged, it was enough to give people on the boat at the time a scare.

Actually, greed is also why the Titanic sank. It had some damage and needed to be repaired. Doing this would delay the launch day and it would have costed the company lots of money and so the Captain ordered it to be patched up. When the Iceberg hit, it wasn't just the Iceberg that caused it to sink, that was just the chain reaction. The Iceberg ripped away at the patched up damage and caused the water flooding problem. Had the ship been properly repaired, it wouldn't have sank in the ocean. That is why the Captain decided to go down with the ship, it was his call to go forward with the Maiden voyage. He chose to have few lifeboats to have more space on the ship. He also sped up in waters known for Icebergs cause he was confident with the build of the ship. Ironically because of greed, the company would never recover from the sinking of the Titanic. They lost over 100 million dollars when it sank and it forever tarnished their reputation too. Sadly, a former lookout crew that was on the ship later committed suicide out of guilt for forgetting some of his lookout items when he boarded the ship.
