We started to train our High Red Green Cheek Conure and accidentally punished him. Almost immediately we saw a change in his behavior and his attitude!!! It proved that negative reinforcement and punishment DO NOT WORK in training a bird!

Hello I enjoyed your talk but being an owner of conures for 40 years I must say this. If you do your research conures in the wild are nibblers. They do it to groom. You will never be able to take it away as it's the way they are. Biting hard with mean intent is different but will change. Conures are very attached usually to one person in particular in the house.

Yes! We had never had a conure before but knew from our research that they were a bit more on the nippy side! I'm ok with nips and being beaked as he 'commuicates' But bitting me on the face....and drawing blood! That is not acceptable!! :-)

This makes a lot of sense I just took into green-cheek Norris brothers that cannot be separated they have been non-stop biting my fingers my ears my lips and honestly I don't know how to make it stop I was putting them back in their cage when they did something bad thinking it would be kind of like training a dog I'm doing all the research right now thank you for this video how did you get him to stop biting

I have two green cheeks, very bonded, I'm 8th the owner. They snap out but they only mean it in that moment, You can go back seconds later and get love.

THat is how Kiwi is now. He has his moments but minutes later he is an angel again. (and sometimes we can actually see his demeanor change WHILE he is being bad.....he knows when he messes up!)

He was probably kissing you and doesn't understand. Once I realized this and I relaxed when he kissed my lip. He tested this out without hurting me at all. Now he occasionally he kisses 💋 me and I trust him and he's kind to me.

That is what Jason keeps telling me. But dude.....it hurts! Kiwi has left the lips alone recently and has moved on to latching onto my ears! He likes the tender places. But slowly we are working with him to learn!

What you pay attention to is what you get. That is the bottom line with toddlers and conure. So pay attention to the behaviors you want and ignore the ones that you don't. Take the power out of biting bynot giving it power. Of course on hormonal days, it might be best just to back off for the day instead of trying to swim upstream.

Yes, that is exactly how we got him to not bite our hands. We just turn away.....or remove him from our presence for a minute ....works like a charm. He wants back with us and eventually realizes what causes us to turn away!

I'm so heartbroken I have a Green-Cheek Conures for 15 years and it stay with my parents after my parents passed away last year I took it into my home and within four day it died I have no idea what happened I know that I was playing with it and also my kids was playing with it but I'm thinking maybe the new level of stress from the kids taking it in and out of the cage and also new environment killed him but we are absolutely heartbroken over it. Do you have any tips or advice for our future parrot?

I’m so sorry about your loss!!! When you get another one, let it settle in on its own terms. Let it decide when to get in and out of the cage. It’s a scary time for them!
