Why Trains Run on the Left in the UK

they do on nearly all the track in the UK except on the West Highland Line between Glasgow Queen Street and Fort William. Where there is a station with an engineering siding and two tracks they use the opposite track to stop. This allows Snow ploughs etc to access the line in the time of severe weather. The line has the best scenery in the UK and the highest Station Corrour.

Keeping left dates from long before the horse and cart era. People always passed others, keeping left. If you met your friend, you shook hands with your right hand. If you met an enemy or someone who might be a threat, you had your right hand ready to draw your sword. Keeping left is the law of nature.
