The best feeling is when someone from another sport says they can beat you at your own game, then precedes to get humbled big time.

What about Alexander popov? He famously trash talked people right before the races and was unbeaten for 8 years. I think are some instances of trash taking working in swimming but the instances of it going wrong are far greater.

That's good. I was trying to think who it worked for. I didn't think about Popov 🧐

I used to do the opposite of trash talking when I was swimming competitively. I was a "poor-mouther". I'd talk myself down in the clerk-of-course/bullpen when you were getting organized with other swimmers. I'd talk about how I wasn't feeling good, how I was tapering for another meet and I was just hoping to put forward a decent showing. Worked well for me.

hmm, I would kind of argue that the examples might be more arguments for correlation vs causing the opponent to win. but it is hard to say exactly how much trash talking affects a particular individual. it is a little hard to measure over a 4 year period too. the other thing I kind of think about swimmers is that (other than relay) swimming is such an individual sport. you don't generally feel like you have a team that is depending on you and also in swimming sometimes I feel more than other sports like I am really competing against myself. so I kind of feel like trash talking may have less effect bc a lot of the time I'm thinking, am I performing at my most efficient and doing better than last time or doing better than last practice? I'm probably not good at trash talking bc I'd take it seriously (and feel mean) and probably good trash talkers are half joking (it's showmanship or daring someone or creating drama for media hype)

I am a swimmer.About 4 years ago we had a trainer in our club that doesnt even trained us, and he said something about: ''if you are not good enough, you can go to the showers.'' Then i Got 100m free in cca the same time i swim it right now after 4 years. Trashtalking doesnt make you swim slower, it makes you faster.

I don't know, in Greece amateur sports (anything else than football/soccer and basketball) are so neglected that we only try to support each other, no matter which sport we do, because we're all broke, and we all know it

Jordan was a trash talker... He lost interest in regular season games so he would trash talk to give himself something to get excited for. Jordan is well known for his trash talking. Someone who performed better under more pressure. Horrible example.

So why does it work in other sports but fail in this one? I mean in boxing it is almost an accepted thing all the way through training for a fight, yet those hearing the trash talk pre-weigh in are not all suddenly training harder and then beating their mouthy rivals in the ring. Where is the distinction coming from here?

In most examples it's the underdog doing the trash talking to try to put off the favourite. It's not really surprising that they go on to lose. Swimming is one of those sports where (unless it's very close) it's usually possible to place the winners according to their recent best times. Trash talking is mostly irrelevant, as swimmers will probably forget it as they focus on their race and doing what they need to do.
