Every year, about a third of Americans spend at least some time on a boat. In the landscape of recreational power sports, which includes boats, some categories have seen their fair share of struggles in recent years. But boat industry revenues have been mostly growing. Boat sales have seen a boost during Covid, but some analysts think the growth is poised to continue.

Thank you to all those people financing your purchase of your first time, new boat at never-before seen prices. After you experience the short season, short supply of slips, high cost of maintenance, need to constantly clean, and on-water navigational frustration, and people exit this fad in volume, I look forward to purchasing your rarely used boat in three years at half the price you paid.

Same for all the newly minted kayaking enthusiasts. I'm waiting to upgrade when all those people realize the kayak in thier garage hasn't been used in 3 years. Looking forward to a peddle drive option I can't afford new that will be nice and cheap used and with very little use.

@@sqlb3rn a gun is at most a few thousand dollars and takes up minimal space AND you don't get a personal tax bill for it each year you can't "hide". I struggle to find a hobby that is analogous to th expense and maintenence of boat. People who buy three 4k peddle kayaks for example aren't forced to have a license to operate it and likely dont self declare their kayak has increased thier taxable personal property. Even so when those people store 3 kayaks they don't use eventually they decide they want the garage space. The boat market will have a much shorter drop onto the market due to the fact 3 kayaks can be creatively stored but a big hulking boat likely can't be stacked mounted or suspended in the garage to free up space.

I am possibly the cheapest SOB alive. Never do anything. Just save and plan for retirement. Always dreamed of having a boat someday, but thinking it’d never happen… then 2020 happened and I realized how fragile life is and how fast it can all be taken away from you. I bought my first boat, brand new last year. And haven’t regretted a single second. I Love it and wish I had done it sooner. There really is a freedom you can only feel when on the water.

Banks haven't paid in a very long time. As my portfolio shifts towards income over growth as I near my target retirement, the yield winds up somewhere around 5%. Which is fine. If I want more income I can just take out an annuity instead. You need a basic personal finance class. Investment takes time...I've been doing it since I was a teenager.

This is just a sales analysis. The reason people are buying boats is because nobody can stand sitting in their stupid apartment anymore. STOP IT. You clowns are jacking the rates at marinas everywhere which sucks for those of us who actually live on our boats. The upside for everyone else is in a few years all these same clowns will realize that they have no idea what it costs to maintain and keep a boat in good condition and there will be a glut of poorly maintained but fairly new boats flooding the market. Wait to buy until then.

The “incredibly expensive features that take the thinking out of piloting a boat” connection to why women and minorities are getting into it is the most white guys that own boats argument possible. This video is missing a huge reason younger people are sailing now. All of the power boats they keep showing are expensive AF, have high operating costs and will get you nowhere while being uncomfortable. There was a massive sailboat boom in the 70’s and their original or even second owners can’t maintain them anymore. A boat that can get you from L.A. to Hawaii or from Florida to the Caribbean for free can be had for less than the cost of the new jet ski you’re talking about. Younger people who can do the work are finding an opportunity for freedom they’ll likely never get because retirement isn’t an option and they’re taking it.
@johngilbert1325
@johngilbert1325 2 жыл бұрын
yep. The sailboat market has been dying for well over a decade since before 2008, and boomers are continually retiring from sailing to expensive cruisers/trawlers they can actually use. a few years ago, you couldn't give away a decent, working 35-40 foot sailboat. Problem is those 1960s to 1980s boats are getting long-in-tooth- even the good ones- a few years of yard fees to keep it in the water will equal the value of the boat. Even top-end boats saw their prices drop like rocks before covid. I've watched decent to great sailboats sit on the market for the better park of a decade. But millenials are starting to buy into these bargains- now that they have a little money to spare (but no where near what their boomer parents had in disposable income back 30 years ago).

I think the same. They have romanticized and idealized the idea of living and cruising on a boat and a lot of people are looking for an escape (Jimmy Buffett made a career of catering to this feeling). Some will be glad they did, and some will be selling their boats a year from now. We go on long trips on our boat (like to the Bahamas), and it can be quite the fun adventure. But, not always!

The new boat I want is a 23’ Grady White 232-that’s a 23 foot walk around with 2 outboard engines…it’ll cost damn near $200,000 so unless your comparing boat prices to Lamborghinis you may be a bit off target with that information

Lots of videos out there about the latest upwardly trending purchase and the shortage of commodity v, w or x. What is missing is the video showing how much wealth is out there in the average household. OR at least the high level of confidence that the average person has in the economy. I think I’d only want to own a boat if I lived on it. I really hate having any extra maintenance (because neglect is not an option), so it’s best for me to keep my life streamlined, in terms of ownership of material possessions. If I wanted to get out on the water, I don’t think it’d be to just sit out there. Maybe a jet ski would be more fun.

Stay away from Stern drives that are more than 7 years of age, especially those sit in the water . Rust and corrosion are always a concern. Simpler the better. if your going offshore a distance twin engines are the way to go if your budget allows. Boats are not cheap . Expect to pay about 45, 000 dollars for a new 19 foot boat or even more. There are fewer boat manufacturers than back in the 1970s', also fuel prices at marinas are very high. Oh yes, it is nice to be out on a cruise for a few hours with the wind the sun and some pretty scenery

I think the manufacturer's could diversify not just in parts and service but also in Marina themselves. There seems to be a general lack of and mismanagement of marinas in America. Particularly live aboard marinas. This is where I think there is going to be amazing growth over the next 10 to 20 years. With remote working and the sheer number of baby boomers retiring allows people to live anywhere and to live different lifestyles. We have already seen this in the RV living boom. And I think we'll see it in live aboard boats as well. I would focus on States with no income tax, large bodies of water, and that are friendly to boat owners. Having a more agreeable climate helps as well. These would be States like Tennessee Texas and Florida.

boats are way to expensive for what they are, especially the aluminum fishing boats, and the cost of these outboard motors is ridiculous, a 115 hp merc with controls and rigging is going to cost you upwards of $12,000, the only reason they are selling like hot cakes is because people have been stuck at home and the boat manufactures offer "lifetime" warranties on the hulls so the bank will finance a boat for 20 years now! even the used market isn't much of a deal, I see 3-5 year old boats going for 80% of what a new one is worth
