The US Navy is renowned for its extreme power - no one on Earth dares to mess with it. But there's a group, known as pirates, who frequently challenge the US Navy with their powerful weapons. Why does the US Navy choose non-lethal methods against these pirates? Is it strategic, or is there another reason? Why not simply use a railgun to handle them? In this video, we'll explore the reasons behind the US Navy's approach to these sea threats. Modern Pirates Documentary. Somali Pirates vs. US Navy. Pirates ATTACK US NAVY ship.

Till the first US Navy sailor is seriously injured or killed....it is beyond me why a US Navy ship's commander would let ARMED pirates get within effective range of the pirates automatic weapons and rocket launchers.
@noahway13
@noahway13 5 ай бұрын
They want to be sure of the people's intent. As said in the video, pirates disguise themselves in several ways. They don't sail around attacking ships while flying a pirate flag. And I'm sure you see what happens when the US accidentally kills someone, so, they let them get closer when feasible. Still, it's not much more serious than swatting a fly. Plus, American equipment costs a huge wad of cash, most ATG missiles cost over a million dollars. A few days ago, it seems the USN followed your advice and smoked a bunch of pirates beyond stand-off range. (They did not use the 50 cal as most sources stated--and this may come out soon in press coverage.) You can fwd your comment to people, showing you called it ahead of time (+_+) RIP

Power is no detriment unless the holder of that power is willing to use it... Unwillingness to use power is detrimental to the safety of merchant shipping. If the pirates know that when they attack, they will simply be frightened off, that certainly would not stop the pirates from attacking future victims. However, if they realize that any attack will result in their immediate death or at the minimum, the destruction of their boat and a long swim; I am sure that this would deter attacks. If a group of boats approach a victim and one attacke the victim. all of the group should be considered fair game for decisive retribution. Additionally, when captured, the summary execution of the pirates would also deter attacks. I realize that the above strategy will not sit very well with bleeding heart liberals but, it would be effective and IMO... THE ONLY SOLUTION TO PERMANENTLY PREVENT FUTURE PIRACY! It is guaranteed that no dead pirate has ever attacked a ship again!

You may think me a liberal, but while I do agree with you overall, It is like taking a chainsaw where a scalpel is better. Simply put, Navy ammo is not cheap. why waste a 200,000 dollar tomahawk when a few Kilowatts of electricity can do the same thing. As for the Merchant ships, they are usually not allowed to run armed due to Maritime law. its been the same for centuries in that regard. An armed Freighter can be devastating against Merchant shipping if one Ship Master goes rouge. Personalty though I'm all for permanent removal of the threat.

Great video! I'm a fair but stern person this video has shown me a different light... However, most of those ships the people were clearly armed with bad intentions I think a nonlethal approach sends the wrong signal I feel that a ship at sea is vulnerable, it should be if a vessel comes within a certain distance you have the right to take preventative measures. It's a big ocean if a ship comes up to you most likely they're up to no good?

As an American Navy advisor, I suggest a fusion or mixed approach. The thing is that direct, in-person Naval warfare experience for our sailors of all ranks and specialties is very valuable for a handful of reasons: including the critical but unlikely one we must like peaceful Trajan be prepared for: a great power Naval war. Adversaries willing to defy and mix it up with the elite US Navy are rare: basically a precious natural and human resource. Official navies won't mix it up with us; and if they do, it could even have consequences for our USA. So if it's necessary to protect truly important allies, cargo, or our citizens, use lethal methods; but generally approach this more like the Plains Indian Calvaries and use smoke grenades and flares and fireworks on their boats; mock them like I could have killed you, take honor and experience, but don't terrify them too badly and let them take some loot on other occasions. Thus the profit motive will enrich these African pirates and keeping them roaming the seas and giving our US Navy sailors modern war experience. That's what I think.

With the accuracy of modern weapons why not just aim at their engines since most pirates use outboard motors that if disabled leaves these small boats dead in the water with no loss of life? If a boat can’t move then it could be at least days or weeks before any of their gangs of thieves can help fix these boats thus leaving the area safe.

Using non lethal force against these pirates is ridiculous! It only emboldens them to increase their attacks and ultimately endangers non military vessels which will likely not have sufficient means to defend themselves. Less lethal means less prosecution. No punishment for illegal acts means more such actions. Pirates know that they can get away with just about MURDER. our neighborhoods are an example of a lack of response to violent actions and disregard for the rule of law. So SAD. All Navies engaged in pilot control should use their military capabilities judicially, but more often than the use of non or less lethal technology. Taking out a few pirates without hesitation, just might reduce their attacks on commercial shipping. My 2 cents.

There's a consideration here, I'm all about the fuck em up approach, but the stats at the beginning of the video stated there were zero deaths involved with piracy. All they want is the stuff on-board. I think if we started killing them whenever they are encountered you would start seeing a rise in civilian deaths as a result. Private Contractors are already on-board and killing these guys in self defense, but that's a little different than a full ass warship coming out and blowing the crap out of small fishing vessels. The U.S. Navy cant be everywhere, and I think we're going to start seeing an ocean that is less policed by the Navy and more force projection oriented toward soon to be near peers like China. It sounds good on paper to just kill em all, but with a drawdown in the number of combat vessels, the littoral craft being decommed after being built a year into service, and a focus on larger warships going forward it probably wouldn't be in anyone best interest to start canoeing heads at every opportunity; it's going to get worse in terms of piracy I think.

Risk/reward is what keeps piracy going. If the worst that happens is a water cannon bath the rewards will usually justify the risks. You needn't kill them all, but you should at least insure that they don't make it home with tales of glory and plunder.
