@@eraldhoxha6372 No, cars are not an investment. By definition, an investment is something that potentially can bring you profit, by profit it means that you get returns with the money you invested. No car will make you win money, unless you will work with it to make more money, like Uber driving, for example. But if you are buying a car to be safe on the road, which doesn't make sense because more speed means higher risk so it's safer to walk, you are spending money on getting somewhere faster.

Bought used 8yo Tesla MS with free supercharging and premium connectivity. Zero fear of battery issues. Now at 10yo 135k+ miles. There are folks running 400K miles on original battery. At my cost to charge, if I get 100k out of the battery, it will pay for its replacement based on gas savings alone, given a 0-100% charge would cost me a max of about $10 charging at home.

If your entire argument is that replacing the battery is inevitable, please tell me which gasoline car I can buy that will last forever without a new engine or transmission after it hits 200K miles or so. Duh it’s going to get old. Every car gets old. And no one buying a $17,000 used Tesla is going to spend $20K on a battery.

I can give you one, a 2001 Chevy Tahoe LS. My Tahoe had over 340,000 miles on it before I had to rebuild, not replace the transmission. The rebuild cost $1300 at a reputable transmission shop. The engine needed a new head gasket at 260,000 miles, and I replaced the gasket myself in my friend's garage in under 2 hours for less than $100. I've had Toyotas and even Hyundais with over 200,000 miles on them that only needed a clutch replacement ($800 - $1500). The drive trains (engine and transmission) on most ICE cars are highly dependable.

@callmebigpapa I wouldn't take a lesson on how reliable a used car will be based on one source or anecdote. There is a reason there are so many used Teslas on the market right now. Hertz dumped them due to high maintenance costs and unforseen maintenance issues. Hertz had thousands of Teslas in their inventory. What Hertz did is definitely a barometer to use when buying a new or used Tesla, since the Teslas in Hertz's inventory where used by a wide range of drivers and driven in a lot of different conditions (not just one driver under a small set of conditions). Consumer Reports has also rated Tesla as the third worst major automobile maker in the world, based on their Tesla owners' reviews. That says a lot. Stay away! IMO, there are a lot of Tesla owners who are having buyers remorse right now and who are trying to stick you with their problem.

@@k4everut I guess everyone should buy a Chrysler or Chevy that should work out great for fuel costs and reliability? For some time, the average lifespan of a car's engine was eight years, or 150,000 miles. New designs, better technology and improved service standards in recent years have increased this average life expectancy to about 200,000 miles, or about 10 years. Still not great but still better.

@@k4everut The 2001 Tahoe gets 14 MPG overall, with 13 MPG in the city and 16 MPG on the highway. So for your 340k miles you have spent around 65k in fuel. In a Tesla you would have spent 7k for electric. You should watch Tony Seba's videos.

Yes if the battery is treated properly, as in never overcharge beyond 80per ent or grossly run it out all the time, it can go a long time. With that said, 80 percent is not good. Look at a regular lead acid battery, with no load if it reads 12 volts even it’s toast

😅 exactly! There’s so much BS in this video I wouldn’t know where to start. There’s Teslas with 350K and more on them. The electric motors last longer than ICE engines! The vast majority of them have the same battery 🔋 pack, even 10 years later, and degradation levels off, and they will go another 10K or more. Most of us don’t keep vehicles that long. I get a new (or used - new to me) car every 5-7 years. The battery pack is under warranty the whole time! The current replacement on a pack is $15K, not $25… and the cost has steadily gone down every year for 12 years! But 99% have never needed a new battery pack. The depreciation is actually a good thing 👍 Now folks can get in an EV much cheaper. No, no one is saying by a 5-10 yr old one. But 2-3 yrs and you’re getting an awesome deal LOL ! 🎉

Tesla doesn’t give you a new battery under warranty. It’s a refurbished battery. They replace bad cells in a pack with new ones but don’t touch the old cells. This is like mixing old and new light bulbs. The old ones are just as likely to fail as the bad ones. Thus, these refurbished packs often need to be replaced again.

Battery prices has come down and will continue to do so. In ten to 12 years (in an ICE car the motor and transmission will be gone since they are designed for 150,000 miles only) Quote "The price of EV batteries is projected to drop 40% between 2023 and 2025, per a new Goldman Sachs research note." March 15, 2024. That is only a two year span. !2 years the battery will be very cheap, and there will be a business for replacing old batteries for newer ones that use less rare metals. The old battery will make several new batteries.

We have companies in California that take your Tesla battery off the car replace the weak cells with battery cells that match the voltage of the whole battery pack and put it back in your car and give you a one-year warranty for $7000! There are so many EV bashers that don’t know Jack about electric vehicles because they’re ignorant and cannot read and they don’t have a clue to do research on what’s going on with the current EV Phenomenon. Your old weak cells from your bad battery. Pack are recycled in California by a company called Redwood. 100% of EV battery cells are completely recyclable. This is the second source of battery material. The first is by mining it which is more difficult.

But is that not a very high repair cost? If you are the unlucky one who in that situation and need to find $7000 and cannot afford it? I would be very angry with a company who sold me a car that needed me to stump up $7000 to just get my car back with the range I expected new. What car other type of car gets a smaller fuel tank the older it is? Is the warranty on Tesla 70% or below and if I read correct you could get a 70% put back in and not a new one and only in the region it was purchased in? Correct me if I am wrong. I have no issues with EVs they just have too many issues for what I need. One being the cost to wire up electrics into my garage. Many people where I live park on the road. Reduced range as I don't want to swap my car every 5 years to get my 'fuel' tank back to capacity. Going any reasonable distance. The God awful instrumentation of the Tesla and to me kit car look of it. The fact they think the Cyber Truck looks cool! It brings to mind the DeLorean.

Getting better every year. Furthermore, modern conventional vehicles became Computers on 4 wheels. Chips and electronics go bust, if a car is left for one year parked in a garage. Gone are the days when a car left for years in a barn, could be started after changing the fluids and little more.

Used Teslas dropped in resale value because Hertz dumped huge numbers of Model 3s and Model Ys on the used car market. The Hertz Teslas have pretty much been sold off and resale prices are increasing. Tesla batteries are easily lasting 10 years. Newer Model 3s with LFP batteries should easily last 15 years. Buying a used ICE car can present a lot of problems for buyers also, and you simply ignore those issues. I have a used 2022 Model 3 with 77,000 miles on it and it has 95% of its original battery capacity. So, you're just wrong. I have had zero problems with my Model 3, other than the previous owner had curb rash on two of the wheels, and didn't repair them correctly. Tesla Model 3 motors are designed to last a million miles. Hybrids are a good choice but they require more maintenance than an EV. You have an EV battery, an EV motor and a gasoline engine that you have to maintain. It costs me $7.75 to charge my Model 3 from 0 -100% at home. That provides me around 225 -240 miles of range in city driving. It costs about $16,000 to replace a battery on a Tesla Model 3, however that cost can be as low as $13,000. EV battery costs are plummeting, and I suspect that as they decrease, more and more companies are going to offer EV battery replacements for Teslas, and it is possible that Tesla will drop the cost to replace the batteries on used EVs. If you have a shop with the proper tools, the labor is not that difficult. So conceivably, a shop could purchase a new Model 3 battery replacement for $8000.00 in the future and charge $2000.00 to install it and make over a $1000.00 a day in profit per each repair, and they could repair multiple cars simultaneously. Considering the huge numbers of Model 3, Model S, Model Y and Model X cars on the road, these types of repairs could be very profitable for shops, assuming that the cost of the replacement battery packs goes down. Often an entire battery pack can be repaired in a Tesla by just replacing a few bad cells in the pack. This type of repair will be the future of EV battery repairs because it is relatively cheap, $2000 - $3000, and it restores the battery to near-new capacity. As more and more third-party auto shops start doing these repairs, most battery replacements will not be necessary. Auto shops are going to be forced to do these repairs because of the huge numbers of EVs being purchased. I just took a trip to CA, and every other car on the road was a Model 3 or a Model Y. I also would predict that Tesla will refine its battery replacement process and start repairing packs by replacing bad cells in the packs because it would be profitable for them to do these repairs and because they will be forced to do them by competition.

But, now they have many refresh changes across all models, which makes buyers want the new stuff. I suspect you are wrong and while 2021- will be undesirable and low cost, the 2024+ are going to stablize (unless they make major improvements or drop retail on the new ones significantly). Driving an EV especially a Tesla is addictive. Yes you get addicted to it. You get addicted to driving with one pedal. Its so simple. Just take your foot off the accelerator and the car slows down without having to use the brake. A flywheel is enagaged charges the battery. You only need to use the brake when the car is fully charged. Its addictive not having to go to Midas muffler for brakes. If you take it easy you should get 50K on a set of brake pads. Its also addictive driving the car. The weight is down low and spread out to the four corners of the car so you feel like it is glued to the road especially if you have a dual motor EV. IIs addictive not going to Midas for the exhaust system and paying through the nose as there is no exhaust system and no catalytic converter to steal. Really I could go on for three more paragraphs but you get my point, I hope. Its put the fun back in driving for me. I love getting into the car and driving it. I care less about what other people drive. I see Bentlys and Roll Royce's and all I see is an old man in an old mans car. Really to own one is to love one. In the car engine world, they cost money to maintain, and less reliable over time. Engines and transmissions break down. Degradation sounds like a pretty harsh word to describe battery performance. I think depreciated capacity would be a better term…and variable based on each use case. I found a less than two-year-old model 3 with high mileage (81k)… the latter being a bigger selling point for me than age. It currently gets 257 miles when charged to 100%. I’ve had the car 6 months and have driven another 12k miles (93k mileage now).

There’s a flaw in your mental approach to EV batteries. You said their warranty for the battery is 8 years and after 10-12 years you’ll need to spend 20 grand to replace it. Here’s the deal, in 10-12 years an ICE car owner puts 180,000 miles on a car that 12 years old if we use 15k miles per year on the average. So, if you drive 180k miles in 12 years and your car gets 28 mpg you would have needed to purchase 6400 gallons of gas. If you paid say 3.75 per gallon and multiplied that by 6400 gallons, you’re looking at 24,000 dollars worth of fuel for 12 years. Now this 24k expense does not include oil changes, transmission oil changes, spark plug replacement, hoses, belts etc, you and easily and another 8kmfor maintenance bringing your total to 24k+8k= 32k costs after 12 years of ownership. Remember, that’s based off of 15k miles per year, if you drive 20-25k which I did, that number can balloon upwards. So tell me again the price of a new battery replacement? One more thing. In 10-12 years car batteries won’t be its current 20k. With advances in manufacturing, that battery will be around 12-16K and probably provide longer range.
@ceege111
@ceege111 18 күн бұрын
This point about range is very good. With any luck we'll get LFP batteries that are more stable as well, making the car safer again. The author of the video has an agenda - he doesn't sell Teslas - only Tesla does. I have a 6 year old tesla that has 90% of it's original range. Which means it has 300 miles not 330. Which is fantastic. The battery does have some risk of failure but data suggests it's quite low. The range loss is quick down to 90% then the degradation is very slow after that. There are Teslas out there easily going half a million miles. Find a gas car that does that - and I'll show you a 1972 volvo.
@KrogenDragon
@KrogenDragon 10 күн бұрын
Tesla fan boys will never discuss battery failures as long as they are replaced under warranty. My neighbor has a Model Y that needed its battery replaced after only 2 years of ownership and 60k miles. Tesla will share the degradation numbers on high mileage Tesla's but they won't give us any data on how many cars have required battery replacement. I don't think Tesla has any interest on sharing with the public what percentage of their cars have had the batteries replaced. The average age of cars on the road in the US today is 12.6 years according S&P Global Mobility. People are keeping their cars longer than they ever have. I have a 21 year old Toyota Avalon with 235,000 miles on it with its original engine and transmission. I would love to see how many Tesla's make it to 21 years of age with 235,000 miles on the original battery.

My 2014 Model S was WAY cheaper to own than both the BMW and Lexus that I own. He's speaking about the glass... My BMW had more glass replacements than the Tesla. Many things you said aren't really true or just not a problem at all... For example the transformer argument, we will need more transformers around... How is that a problem? Have you stopped to think about the infrastructure needed for petroleum harvesting and processing? Besides, transformers are absolutely everywhere already. Full chargers: for day to day charging, one can charge at home, even if you live in an apartment. For longer trips, there are apps to tell which chargers are useable and Teslas can use other chargers, not just Tesla's. That's a problem that will get better and better each year. When gas cars first appeared, there were no gas stations around and look at the infrastructure today and a way more complex infrastructure than what electric cars need. Batteries: a Tesla battery lasts for 300 to 500k miles! The new LFP batteries are thought to last more than the triple of the cycles of the NMC batteries and more than 1 million miles. There are refurbished batteries for a fraction of the price and battery modules to repair when needed. But chances are that you will scrap the car before you replace a battery. Devaluation: that's exactly why we buy used Tesla's...

One has nothing to do with the other. Some folks preferred a horse and carriage to the first Model T Ford. The difference is that we are addressing global warming and pollution using a cleaner energy source. Its cleaner and cheaper for EV use over ICE. Superior technology also helps too though.

Overall picture. It may work for some car owners. But for me, I look at tire and battery replacement, insurance, lack of infrastructure, taxes. Not ready to drink the Kool-Aid.

Food for thought there, great video once again. Here in the UK, the charging infrastructure is lacking and is expensive to access. Our domestic energy costs are insane compared to most other countries. So for the foreseeable future, I’m happy with my diesel Audi and petrol Toyota

Best plan would be to lease and never own a car. Write of lease payment as business expense and get a new car before the 8 year batteries warranty expires.
