Agreed, Valerian is a great supplement. No withdrawals or rebounds in my experience. I've tried everything this guy suggested, and none of this stuff works. Even pre and probiotics. Spent thousands of dollars on supplements over the last 4 years, testing everything long-term. Vit. D, melatonin small (less than 1mg), medium, and large doses, SSRIs, tryptophan, no food before bed, clean off alcohol for 2 years, sunlight and sun exposure, night mode (block blue light) on my phone and other devices, a bunch of other stuff that I won't list because this list will be endless. NOTHING works, except Valerian and a couple of other things that directly act on GABA. Valerian is a good one, I don't even use it during the day for anxiety. I just use it at night.

Personally, for me, Valerian has been a Godsend in aiding my mind and body to relax and lull me into a restful sleep and I NEVER have feelings of drowsiness, sluggishness, slow heart rate, insomnia and most importantly no daytime sleepiness." That is something I struggled with for over 10 years while averaging 2-3 hours of sleep per night and never feeling well rested. All that changed for me since taking Valerium powder capsules a few weeks ago. I take 3 at night an hour or two before bed and it truly has helped me sleep 6-8 hours with fewer wakeups in between and I more easily fall back to sleep again. I don't really suffer with anxiety, but it does 100% halt any 'racey thoughts' about life that might go through my mind when I should be trying to get to sleep. It has given me a part of my life back that I had lost over a decade ago and I am glad I discovered it.

If you take L-tryptophan then it'll convert into serotonin and then later(especially with exposure to sunlight) it'll convert into melatonin. Taking a light walk after taking the L-tryptophan and that helps transport it to the brain.

Fascinating topic. In my herbal practice I rarely use valerian for the reasons you cite. I’ve had clients literally climbing the walls at night even at a small dose. Now I use skullcap, passionflower and chamomile and stress it’s for occasional use only! I’ve had people get addicted to Nervines and can only get to sleep with them. Also I have found if you get people to stop looking at their TVs and cell phones at night their problems ( on multiple levels) disappear. I prefer watching my chickens and having a nightly meditation instead of looking for artificial means to calm me down.

I will say this I was taking spring valley brand d3 plus k2 for a month and didn't notice a change it was only when I started taking naturewise d3 that has organic extra vigin olive oil is when I noticed my mood energy and even mental clarity start to improve. True for me. I've tried valerian roots for insomnia, and it it makes it worse. I am still struggling trying to find a natural remedy. The same goes for melatonin is not for me. However, what helps me is going to bed as early as possible, that seems to help me fall asleep and even if I still wake up 2/3 times at night, having fallen asleep early will help my body to go back to sleep. But it is not always easy to get to bed as early as I would like, and when I can't, I will get restless and have a hard time to fall asleep, and I would only get only few hours of sleep. It is very upsetting because I can't socialise, not even up to 10 at night, because then, after bedtime routine, I'll get to bed at 11 or after, and insomnia will kick in. Is it because of my circadian rhythm?

Many thanks for this. Your positive and logical presentation creates calm and confidence in itself. In my case, I'd worked out the sun element (I cycle and walk daily) but the more technical elements of what is happening are helpful. Time to get a pro biotic into my diet and look at the other pointers. Thank you.

Valerian root is one of those softy supplements. It doesn't make me feel bad in any way, I don't have any dependency on it and it just makes me have a comfy night of sleep. I tend to take a little on Sunday nights.. when I go to bed the whole weekend late and then have to adjust back to routine on Sunday night.. It's not habit forming and have no side effects for me, but then again I don't have too much of an addictive personality. I think it's a wonderful supplement to make you relax and sleep, I also tend to dream a little more when I take it, I think, which I actually quite like 🙂

Although you're correct to point out the severe withdrawal effects associated with these substances, I'm afraid your terminology is quite a bit off. Benzodiazepines and Valerian Root certainly don't block the GABA receptors, they do quite the opposite. They enhance the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid which increases the GABA receptor activation rate. Receptor blockers are known as 'antagonists', where as receptor activators are known as 'agonists'. Benzodiazepines and Valerian Root are both GABA receptor agonists, not antagonists. The fundamental issue is that over time, this increased GABA receptor activation rate ultimately causes these receptors to downregulate, making them harder to activate naturally without the use of these substances. This is problematic, because you need healthy GABA receptors in order to slow down neural activity. They act as a counter balance to the NMDA receptors which are activated by the excitatory neurotransmitter, Glutamate. When the NMDA receptors are being activated as normal but the GABA receptors are no longer responding to gamma-aminobutyric acid, this leads to uncontrollable spikes in neural activity, resulting in the Benzo withdrawal syndrome. This spike in neural activity can lead to persistent panic attacks, brain zaps and insomnia. With psychosis and seizures occurring in the more severe cases of the syndrome. In most cases, insomnia can be remedied by ensuring that enough Magnesium is being consumed in the diet. Magnesium has gentle agonistic effects on GABA receptors, while also providing antagonist/blocking effects on NMDA receptors. This helps to keep neural activity under control without damaging these receptors. The western diet is generally lacking in Magnesium however.
