Nice video, and a good tribute to VHS. I agree with you that VHS has a charming feel about it as far as quality goes. I feel that way when I watch the Friday the 13th franchise. I grew up watching it on VHS, and these days I have the blu-ray box set, but watching it on VHS brings back this nostalgic feel that blu-ray can't duplicate. The blu-ray is beautiful, and crystal clear and crisp, but that grindhouse, gritty feel of VHS brings a certain element that you can only get from tape.

Even though I am a teenager in the 2010's there is still a special place in my heart for the VHS format. I grew up with them, and I'm a huge film buff now so I appreciate it so much! VHS IS THE WAY!

This is a good explanation. It IS nostalgia, but it DOES have a strong sentimental value to many people since it's the way they experienced the movies as kids, and will take them back and give them warm, fuzzy feelings watching them. Add to that that a couple movies weren't ever released on DVD and BR.

I think VHS tapes are more well-known than you'd think. Most major movies were released on VHS until 2005, and schools continued using them for years after. I'm sure most people born before 2000 would have some memory of a VHS tape.

Mrpastry909 I was born in the 80s and I saw plenty of major releases through the 90s and early 00s but many companies stopped carrying them as early as 2001. I recall one of the last companies to get rid of them was blockbuster in 2004.

I totally agree with you..I have probably 250-300 VHS movies and 5 or 6 VCR`s.one of which is a dual deck copying VCR...I still watch VHS movies.even though I have DVD`s,Bluray,and even 4k Bluray...I love them all....and it is true,back in the day,VHS movies sold for as much as $40-$50.....I am not going to toss them out just because a newer format is available....and you are right,we are already seeing the death-throws of DVD and Bluray,after only a few years.

I understand the feeling you have about VHS, it's the same with me with the lion king and most disney classics. So much things are digital and reachable with the clik of a button that we start to feel some sensory deprivation here. In the end, we don't care just about the content but we also appreciate the effort of waiting for the tape to rewind etc.

I watch VHS tapes because of the sound and picture. the sound is smooth, clear and I know everything what people are saying. the video is more real than DVD because slower and analog is my love.

Yes, I've heard that in the mid 80's most VHS Tapes were in the range of $50 to $100 a piece. The prices were so high that only rental stores could afford buying them in large quantities. Hence why the rental store became popular at the time.

So many people have told me that my VHS collection was garbage and an embarrassment. They assume that I must be poor and clingy. So thank you for expressing why you love VHS. I can relate to so many of your points. I just love movies and some of the VHS movies I have have price tags that say $59.95 and such. They are hard movies to find but movies which I really like for the way they capture the era and the culture of the day. I love historical novels made into movies and especially having an original film along with the various remakes and spinoffs. It just makes it fun to compare and contrast. I just watched a Winnie the Pooh VHS movie with my two and a half year old granddaughter. She loved it. Got it from the free box outside a thrift shop. What a wonderful bonding experience!

i started "Collecting" VHS in 2023 (bought a brand new old stock VCR). i grew up with VCDs, so i do not have problems with the image and sound quality. i don't mind rewinding and all. honestly its quite fun to play with. what i dislike about it is how unpredictable a tape can be, and how painful it is to clean the head. 😢 i'm still collecting them, but drastically slow down the pace.

Nice video, good to see there are others that share similar sentiments about VHS. I have DVD & Blu-rays as well, quite a few actually, I collect movies. I never got rid of my Star Wars movies. I have a "Retro Room" in my basement with a late model big box flat screen and an old entertainment stand and about 100 or so VHS tapes, some my wife and I grew up with, others are older films that are more difficult to find on DVD, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s films. I too got rid of most of them when DVDs became popular, but for .25 cents to .50 cents you can get them at thrift shops etc... Its fun to hunt for them, or just buy off of half.com Sure the majority of the time we watch DVDs or Blurays upstairs on our flat screen or stream Netflix etc...but it is fun to curl up on the couch and pop a tape in the retro room like its the 80s or 90s every once in awhile.

Same here! Sadly there's not too many stores around. The nearest one is about and hour away from me. Keep your collection, not just the VHS, all forms of physical media is worth owning. As time passes by, more and more will we be seeing people adopting to Streaming and Downloading, and many titles that are rare and obscure will never make the jump to digital. I have kept my vintage late 80’s VHS and S-VHS recorders and will always have a special place in my heart for them. However, it was LaserDisc that endures with me and my collection of software & hardware blows away anything I have on VHS (never owned pre-recorded VHS tapes and only used blanks for archiving at the time).

I notice you have a couple of those Mill Creek 50 movie sets on your shelf. As a movie buff, I'm a big fan of those because many of the films they put on those sets are exactly the kind of movies I would be looking for on VHS, i.e. deliciously bad obscure B movies, including some that have been featured on MST3K. It's great fun to watch those straight and make up your own riffs. That said, I have a great fondness for VHS as a format because I'm a very tactile kind of person and there's just something satisfying about tapes that DVD and Blu Ray have never quite been able to match. The act of pulling the sleeve off and popping it in the VCR just puts a smile on my face.

Everything you said is spot on. Everything today is sanitized and highly ILLEGAL. I want to go back to 1985 some days. VHS reminds me of that time. I view VHS same way some people view vinyl records.

Today me and my friend are going to a store called Ralphs Records to buy vhs tapes for 50c each were going to mabe buy 6 tapes each if we find anything good I’m 12 and he’s 10 but we like old 80s technology I have 3 old TVs a vcr vhs tapes 47 nes games 80s movies on dvd I will get a ROB when I get enough money I have nice posters and a light up sign but I believe that vcrs and vhs tapes deserve more some are getting destroyed and some throw them away but they shouldn’t be and also vhs tapes just are important because it’s something you buy but you can’t get them back after you chuck them out but you can find a lot of copies of them for certain tapes you just shouldn’t destroy rare tapes your childhood tapes or just your favorite movies so yes I agree with your video vhs matters.👍

A lot of VHS tapes were low quality what with dust and annoying white specks appearing on your screen every now and then, it's hardly surprising that DVD won the war. Not all VHS tapes are created equal, for example in 2004 I bought Peter Pan(2003) on VHS in Sweden even when I watch it now I'm surprised at how good the quality is, no dust or white specks in the beginning or during the whole movie, both the picture and sound quality was pristine , I'm quite impressed with it, this is how VHS tapes should look. It included both the Swedish dubbed version and original English version with Swedish text subtitle. I think low quality VHS tapes are to blame the downfall of VHS, with the technology we have today we can up VHS quality up a notch I think it will sell like hot cakes!. Digital image doesn't have the same impact as watching film grain image, it just looks lifeless.

They made bad tapes in Malezija,Indonesia,China..for that reason the tape screw up vcr magnetic heads,especially when You press forwards and so on.Companies were greedy and didnt care about quality but if You have movie with good quality tape that is a joob!

2020. Great video and analysis. Another reason to collect VHS, and the most important reason. A majority of VHS' were not transferred or made the transistioned to DVD. Especially the Horror genre.

This reminds me of being seventeen and visiting the local video shops after I left school and spent too much time in video shops with friends talking about movies and watching crappy horror films underage (I live in the uk when most horror films had an 18 certificate) video streaming isn't for me and I buy dvds and blu rays from stores instead (even from thrift stores, as well brand new) thank you for this video

i always prefered vhs quality to dvd. Blu ray of course is superior cause you don't see much of the compression artifacts. But I still have vhs recorder with blank tapes to record my programs on. If you have a high end vcr and a high end vhs and record digital hd live tv with rgb/scart ouput on vhs, you won't see the differance between the two. The vhs quality can be extreamly good quality if recordered with good exquipement and connection. They used to record film onto vhs with standard quality cinemascopic machines, so they never used the real potential of vhs like they have for the compact disc. Think how they went from VCD to blu ray quality and stopped using tape after Dtheather vhs

There was a point in time where it was popular to get rid of the VHS tape and convert your collection over to DVD. Unfortunately a lot of us collectors did that and are and have been trying to rebuild our collection back to the way it was before. 20 years later and I’m still working on my collection getting it back to the way it used to be there’s a lot of very rare titles that I had I just can’t seem to find.

Yes, this is true. I am in the same boat. I got rid of alot of older movies that I am still trying to hunt to this day. I regret doing that. if you look at my old VHS collection from 10 years ago, there are tapes that are worth so much that I converted over to DVD-R and I cant find them on sale.

Tape, in and of itself , is an interesting medium. I enjoy VHS for pre 1990s TV movies that have descended into oblivion. Retro groove supreme. Plus the aspect ratio is correct being that TV movies of that era were “full screen.”

I was born in 1993. I'm growing in a time when there's a transition from VHS to DVD (VHS to Video CD in my case) Video CD were the thing it priced rather high but still reasonable while DVD was the stuff that only the rich family can afford and VHS? Everyone selling off their whole VHS collection,setting up tape shops left and right...I think they all regretted about that decision now... Let's just say that VHS were took away from me way too fast now I want it back,the only VHS tape I still have is the tape head cleaning kit and demonstration tape video of a home appliance still in wrapped in clear plastic. My first VHS movie I've watched was Disney's Beauty and The Beast.

VHS Tapes are still good to watch.You are so right.Certain VHS Tapes can't compare to DVD or Bluray.In the 80s I loved the movie Moonwalker by Michael Jackson.I watched it over and over.I bought Moonwalker on bluray and it wasn't the same for me.Sure the bluray was so clear to watch but it didn't give me that nostalgic VHS feeling.I wanted to see Moonwalker in the original format the way I remembered it.I picked up 2 sealed Moonwalker VHS Tapes just for back up in case something would happen to my original copy of Moonwalker.I've noticed in the past year that certain VHS Tapes are getting more harder to find.Especially sealed original VHS copies.I loved your video.Thanks for sharing ur thoughts on VHS movies.

I know I"m like five years late to this video, but it's 2020 and DVDs still keep pace with Blu-ray in terms of sales. My local Target's movie section is still ~40% DVD. The format has been out since 1996 (24 years) compared to VHS's 28-year run (1977-2005, using your quoted end date). Few signs of slowing down either. DVD's legacy is far more substantial than this video would have expected.

The main reason VHS and CRT look better is that the movies and TV shows were better in that era and were produced with the strengths and limitations in mind! I so miss CRT and Vhs for just watching telly...... These new LCD looks amazing but are so fatiguing on the eye! And also the sound engineers in this era payed attention to dialogue rather than effect as most televisions only had a mono speaker but a very good one!!!!!!

The picture on vhs might not be as sharp as dvd but it's got a depth to it and the colours are more natural and the frames are continous so the film appears much smoother and all these add to make it a more superior format. The sound is also analogue and to my ears sounds much better compared to digital sound. You need to buy ex-rental tapes though rather than the mass produced tapes that were sold in the shops.

Its because as a kid you remember watching the movie in that quality (VHS) watching it on Blu-Ray seems different because it does not bring back memories because you never watched it in HD you watched it in VHS quality, so the memories seem different only when watching that Video Tape do your childhood memories come back to you :) Greetings from the UNITED KINGDOM

Get a good working JVC deck with SVHS and enjoy what you have.. You’ll have to have a good hd tv and calibrate it properly, but you’ll not regret keeping them, they can look great on a 60” .. Pass it on when you’re old n gonna die, it’ll be something to remember you by n be expensive collector stuff 😐

I have a new 4k led tv with a blue ray player, dvd player and a Vhs recorder! I don't care that much about picture quality...it's all about enjoy a good movie. Netlix no go for me...

Seems it's up to us to convert alot of old movies to DVD since alot of good movies haven't been converted to DVD and sold commercially, REASON? Lazyness of DVD companies not to do it, I see no other reason why they haven't converted ALL the classic VHS tapes to DVD by now and offering them on DVD, Just utter lazyness of manufacturers. Case in point, Try to find a full English dub version of the classic Fatal Chase? I have found digital versions but ALL seems to only have the original Chinese audio and English subtitles, however I happen to have a VHS tape of it I got from a video rental store that shut down when they was selling everything, Mine is 100% English dub. So I say again, Lazyness of DVD manufacturers not to convert this classic to DVD in English (only DVDs are Chinese with English subtitles).

hi i don't like vhs video tapes why you may ask. it's the pinch roller. they go funny and when you find out. all your tapes are messed up big time you see if the tape is not line up right. when it goe's in to the pinch roller. i used to fix pinch rollers in vhs betamax unit's so many times. i went over to dvcam far better.

The only major flaw I have with VHS is that it's really hard to find movie in Widescreen format on VHS. It's not that big of deal though, because I rarely notice an image is cropped unless it's done really badly.

Where did you get the idea that DVD and/or Blue ray won't last 30+ years? They will last longer than VHS. VHS stores it's information on magnetic tape; it is going to be effected by magnetic fields and different stressors of the environment.

hdjksa52 DVDs and Blu-Ray are also susceptible to damage aswell. There's something called disc rot, if they are close to heat, humidity or direct sunlight they can get damaged. But my argument is that as digital streaming becomes more common place, DVD and bluray will become harder to find in common stores, it will be something catered only to the collector. There will be stores, but online, and it won't be cheap. That's just a prediction. It's all about supply and demand.
