The geopolitical term Balkans is an invention of the German geographer Johann Zeune from the 19th century. We Croats do not agree with the name Balkans and that you call us Balkans. The use of the name Balkan began after the Austrian Empire decreed the use of the Illyrian name, so overnight we were renamed Balkans. We are Illyrians = South Slavs and the mountains that surround us are the Dinaric Alps or Dinarides. We are of the Dinaric race and have a Dinaric mentality. As for the geopolitical name of the Balkan Peninsula, they should first learn to define what a PENINSULA is. The so-called Balkan Peninsula cannot begin at the Sava River in Croatia, but in the Gulf of Trieste. The city of Trieste and the Gulf of Trieste are Italian territory. The peninsula cannot end at the Romanian-Moldovan land border, because then it is not a peninsula, but it can end in Odessa, which is the territory of Ukraine. In other words, you have no idea about geography. Ovo je napisano u dobroj namjeri.

@@Casio21970 every Balkan nation dislikes saying that they’re Balkan, and will insist that their neighbors are Balkan and that they aren’t, look at what Slovene Slavoj Žižek said for example, Slovenia will claim that Croatia is where the Balkans start, then Croatia will claim that the Balkans start in Bosnia, etc… all the way to Greece, who will themselves claim that everywhere north of themselves is Balkan.

According to the definition of a peninsula, no peninsula in the world starts and ends at a land border like the so-called Balkan peninsula, but the peninsula is bounded by the sea on three sides. The Balkan peninsula cannot end at the Romanian-Moldavian land border, but at the Black Sea and the city of Odessa in Ukraine. The Balkan peninsula cannot begin at the Slovenian-Croatian land border, but at the Gulf of Trieste, i.e. the city of Trieste, which is located in Italy.

Southeast Europe or you can use the old names Illyria /Pannonia and Makedonia, like you still have today Belgica, Hispania, Britannia, Germania - So we are Illiryans and we are not Balkans.

Actually turkish word for mountain is " dag" not Balkan. Word "Balkan" is made of two words "bal" meaning honey on turkish, and "Kan" meaning Blood on turkish. So word Balkan cou be translated - the Land of Blood and honey

Dear Daniela, thanks for the beautiful video. Although some of the information is not completely correct, I encourage you to continue making new exciting videos. Indeed, Balkan is a region from Slovenia to Romania, and all the way south to Greece - including Croatia!! The vast majority of the balkan people are proud beaing balkans. However, some balkan people feel ashamed to admit they are balkans, and consider themselves as higher rase. Therefore, please do not be influenced by the nonsense that there is no Balkan. For your information, the region got it's name by the Ottoman Turks and it literally means HONEY and BLOOD (check your dictionary). Or: a land where HONEY and BLOOD flow's. This is because life is beautiful on the Balkan, like no other place, but the people are ready to kill eachother for rather insignificant things.

Serbia did not have war on its land since WWII. Which suffering are you referring to? The war in 1992-1995 happened in Bosnia & Hercegovina and Croatia, then in 1998- 1999 in Kosovo. Be careful when you talk about the war or suffering, as you referred to it, in former Yugoslavia.

It's so crazy how this region has been through so many conflicts and is seeking its own idenety, but identifies as Islamic with the term Balkan. They love Islam so much, the word Balkan is Turkish. Love to hear what Serbians have to say on this. No wonder its was so easy for Kosovo to exist being Islamic Balkan and all.
