That small island south east of China, of little strategic value, really doesn't seem worth asking our soldiers to die over. Or starting WW3 over... Isn't there some sort of peaceful compromise we can make? How about instead of The US, China, Taiwan, and allies associated with them on both sides investing massive amounts of money on planing and preparing for the war, the world taking the potential loss of life, the expensive, large scale damage to the environment from a true WW3 scenario, and the actual 20 trillion+ combined cost of the war if fighting truly does break out... We just get all three of our countries to pony up Funding together and have the US government work to locate land about the same size and value of Taiwan within another country in the United State's sphere of influence and... sternly... coherence the local government to sell a portion or their land to Taiwan in exchange for an amount of money, (likely an amount worth a trillion or more...) worth 1.25x or so the fair modern value for land of that size, and then have the Taiwanese people make a slow, economic, migration over the next 30-50 years or so to that territory? It would actually be a sweet deal for the unknown country selling off the land. Then finally just give up soverienty over the island to China. The savings from preventing WW3 and even the preperation cost alone over the next 30 years from China and the United States would pay for the costs of the deal and benefit everyone involved. And when I say "strongly coherence," it's because of the absolute necessity of the land deal, and because of the difficult politics around international land trade.

I'd be of considerably more use as "a rifleman behind a blade of grass" on the home front. I tried to enlist in the armed forces after 9/11, but they turned me down for medical reasons. That was a generation ago, and my health has only gone downhill since then. I'm still reasonably healthy in the day-to-day sense, but not in the way that would make me able to come close to passing any military fitness tests. However, I'm fairly well-armed and a reasonably good shot.

Valentin Rybin you do know with the US being drastically damaged Mexico can go against the US borders, but I can guarantee Mexico does not attack the US for what ever reason. Mexico is not a conflict country, they like to be isolated when it comes to war. No one has problems with Mexico as a country, some countries blame Mexico for the drug problems but it’s only a fraction of Mexico’s population who is at fault for that not the whole country. I am Mexican and I can say that Mexicans are friendly, they avoid conflict but when people push us to the limit they get what they ask for. So in a war with China Mexico will not try to attack the US or join any side. They didn’t do it ww1 and neither in ww2. As North Americans we stand together even if we get called horrible people.

Yes, currently single parents can't enlist (with either joint or sole custody), thus most likely would be exempted from a draft. But again, there is no draft so it would depend on what the laws are at the time.

One strategy ppl have had during drafts is this; if you are likely to ve drafted, volunteering before your name gets drawn means you have more influence on where you will end up... Like i would be scared of being on a ship, so if i was going to be drafted(which i wont because im too old) i would volunteer for the army before i end up being drafted and potentially sent to the navy without a say.

I’m 43. My age group are far more responsible for war than an 18 kid. Send me as the cannon fodder and leave the younger generations alone. I’m badly disabled with spine disease, so bring a soldier is out of the question. I could however be trained to sit in a bunker hooked up to a remote drone/ predator to identify targets etc.
