Why was Churchill's statue defaced? | Black Lives Matter protest

A statue of Sir Winston Churchill erected in Parliament Square, Westminster, has been sprayed with graffiti during a Black Lives Matter protest. Activists claim he believed in racial hierarchies.
It comes after petitions were launched to remove statues of controversial people around London, such as Robert Milligan in West India Quays.
The Metropolitan Police say they are seeking to identify those responsible for the damage to the memorial.

Winston Churchill led this country to victory in WWII, so a statue was erected in honour of that. He was also a racist, which would have been a common and acceptable mindset in his time. The statue is not in honour of his racism though. A LOT of key people in British history were prejudiced - racist, sexist, homophobic etc. That's all they knew. They weren't enlightened then. As long as that is not the reason why they are commemorated, leave them alone. Otherwise this country would have no historical figures.

This is another exemple of the low resolution thinking that's going rampant in that whole movement. Judging the past with modern day values is taking things out of context. Racism became known as a the ultimate social evil in the western world after WW2 because a genocide was committed in Europe using race as a justification for said genocide. We can look back at history going back as far as we want and find exemples of what we call racism all over the map. Our modern moral compass is different than the moral compass of people who lived before us. Could people from the past live what is considered a normal life today ? Probably not. Could we live what was considered a normal life if we were living in the past after living in the present probably not either. If anything the general trend of history is a trend that moves us towards more and more individual freedom and more and more acceptance of people's differences. There is good and bad in everything and in everyone. Nowadays we can observe that freedom without a sense of individual responsabilty leads to chaos. With great freedom comes great individual responsibilities. Some people are just not keen on the individual responsabilty part.
