I think he found his own work around weakness to Kyoka Suigetsu. If I recall correctly, when Aizen asked Yamamoto if he was sure the 'him' stabbing him wasn't an illusion, Yamamoto said that he could never mistake the reiatsu of Kyoka Suigetsu. The way I see it, he was saying that an illusory Aizen wouldn't be stabbing Yamamoto with the real Kyoka Suigetsu. Also, your suggestion isn't valid. Gin said you have to touch Kyoka Suigetsu's blade before it can put you under its Complete Hypnosis. In other words, you have to touch Kyoka Suigetsu in its unreleased state. If it's already in Shikai, you're either under its influence or you aren't. If you aren't under its influence then there's no point in grabbing the blade, Aizen would have to reseal it and unseal it again to try to trap you. If you are under its influence then nothing would happen even if you managed to touch it. If touching the blade while under its spell was a valid defense, Aizen wouldn't have asked Yamamoto if he could trust his senses while the blade was in contact with him. Specifically he wouldn't have left the blade in contact with him as that would have put him at risk of being found out.

He asked Aizen if he really thinks he could stab or cut him and he knew Aizen will stab or cut him because Aizen really thinks he could be a god. That's the time when Yamamoto had the opportunity to really understand how Kyoka Suigetsu works truly Yamamoto didn't completely lost his ruthlessness and battle intelligence. It's a battle of wits and as for Gin he probably knew also that given the time he was with Aizen. I think that released or unreleased won't really matter there if Aizen stab or cut someone, because the moment his zanpaktou comes in contact with anyone they would have seen or sense Aizen because zanpaktou contains the shinigamis spiritual pressure Lastly we can also see in a moment when Aizen cuts all the other captains they have a glimpse of him further proving the zanpaktou and spiritual pressure really cannot be mistaken if it comes contact with you.

Guys let's not forget that Aizen also has a bankai! If you see Aizens shikai it's done you and actually don't need to touch it in order to fall victim, most of the Captain never touched Aizens zanpaktou, remember the day he became a captain thats when he activated it by showing all the captians his shikai and from that day they did his bidding including Yamamoto until Ichigo came through ruining his plans. Yamamoto's bankai is powerful but I don't think he stands a chance if Aizens has to use Bankai which no one knows of. If Aizen can accomplish so much with his shikai imagine his Bankai

But as far as manga and the things that has been shown in the show, he is afraid of Yama or at the very least cautious about his bankai, probably because he can still be hit while kyoka sugetsu is active and it is just harder for the opponent ( Ywach stabbing Aizen while kyoka is active, my point is, he is not invulnerable while the skill is on ). And also the reatsu thing when your reatsu is greater than your opponent your skill/s are much more potent and vice versa. Probably Yama's reatsu is not far off from Aizen making his skills not as potent vs the likes of Soi Fon, plus his bankai's range which is universal ( the whole soul society ). So no matter what illusions he makes he still probably will feel the heat. But then again, this is just my opinion.

We are told about his unbelievable spiritual pressure in TYBW, I can't imagine what Ukitake's Ban-Kai would be if he released all of his spiritual pressure at once. I was looking for your comment, yes, I 100% felt just how forced it was to kill him at that point in the saga when we know if Tite Kubo kept it real he would've probably defeated the villain, but it was supposed to be Ichigo hence he had to die... Still, I would've preferred a battle so fierce it made Genryousai's old body to burn out so hard he required 100 days to recover and during that time the villain revived because bad guy plot and THEN Ichigo can go kick his ass in Yamamoto's place while he's recovering. I think that's more along the lines of what we are used to, but then again...I understand the author's health was past his limit and he forced himself to finish it earlier. Oh well...

I wonder how strong Yamamoto would be in his prime. Even as an old man he was stated to be superior to Aizen. Aizen himself implied that he had reached the limit of his potential, the peak of his power as an ordinary Shinigami. Would that mean that Aizen, if he gets old as Yamamoto, would actually get weaker assuming old age negatively impact performance like it does in real life? But wouldnt truly have made a difference. But he deactivated his bankai because he thought yhwach was dead which gave yhwaxh the chance to kill yamamoto but the old yamamoto wouldnt have deactivated his bankai he wouldnt stop until every Single quiny burnt to death and if his allies burn with them it dosnt matter. Pre Timeskip, Yama is a top tier through and through. Third strongest character behind Ichigo and Aizen But post Timeskip I think Yama has been surpassed by a few Shinigami. His stats were always impressive, but the main danger Aizen and Yhwach both saw in him was his Zanpakuto’s offensive power more than his stats, mastery of the 4 Shinigami arts or battle IQ. This is evidenced by Aizen tanking his Hado 96 with little to no damage and Masked Ichigo’s Getsuga doing more damage to Aizen, and Yama while rage amped (which boosts your stats) and bloodlusted (meaning he was serious and trying to kill) not being able to outspeed or overpower Royd, and certain attacks like Church Song being able to kill Yama Because of that, I think that the Shinigami that scale to the SS, or at the very least the trio that scales to Gerard…..Zaraki, Toshiro and Byakuya scale above Yama in terms of physical stats and AP, though his Bankai’s Existence Erase/Dura Neg heat hax makes it so that his offense is better than theirs by default even if they hit harder As for the ‘contradiction’ with Yama’s Reiatsu being on the outskirts of reason compared to Nobles like Byakuya, Tokinada, Yoruichi and people like Kyoraku….this is most likely comparing their Base Reiatsu levels, not counting Bankai or Shunko. Byakuya’s Bankai in particular gives him (or technically his blades) big speed amps, durability amps, and especially AP amps, compressing hundreds of millions of blades into 1000 and then those thousand into one And that’s pre timeskip before his Bankai was noted to have improved by Tsukishima, and before the 0 Squad training So overall I have at the very least those 3 above him in terms of stats and AP, though his Bankai’s offensive hax is the great equalizer
