Why was One-Punch Man's Season 2's Animation so Mediocre?

With big names like Yutaka Nakamura, Chikashi Kubota, Shingo Natsume, Yoshichi Kameda, Arifumi Imai, Toshiyuki Sato, and many others, either doing little work or in some cases not returning at all for Season 2., the chances of the non-stop bombastic action sakuga fans were treated in the first, became less and less likely.
However, the transferal of the series production into JC Staff's hands aside, that's barely scratching half of the reason the animation quality dropped. So join me today as we explore the other side of One-Punch Man Season 2's animation production woes, in today's video!

Season 1 simply had The Dream Team working for it, rarely will you ever find passion projects like that, it created a masterpiece. And you simply can’t compare Saitama tier animation with average to good animation.

For sure, although the fact that season 2 had an infinitely worse schedule chucked at them with multiple other odd decisions from the higher-ups is equally as crucial to the animation quality dropping :)

It wasn't bad in my eyes. It just stands out by comparison to S1. I found AoT S2 to be lacking in the animation department also after S1. I missed the thick outlines of the characters and the rich color saturation. But at the end of the day, animation does not take first priority. I'm all about the story and characters first.

Yeah, this is really what made it such an unpleasant watch. Some of the animation wasn't that great, but that alone doesn't completely break my enjoyment of a show. I mean, just look at JoJo, half the show is just characters posing the way they appeared on the manga panels with minimal animation going on, and it's still great. But OPM S2's compositing wasn't just mediocre, it's bad enough that it actively detracts from the experience. Well, it's that, and the fact that they cut away from fights so often, usually at the moment of some attack landing, and then they just show the environment getting blown up or something. It destroys the coherence of the scenes in which it happens since there are just chunks of the fight that are missing entirely. I imagine that's more of a directing issue, but it might have been complicated by time constraints. It's certainly not the animation that was the real problem with OPM S2. I should say, though... frankly, I don't really understand where the compositing issues came from? It could have been time constraints, and I don't know enough to truly comment on that, but... it seems to me that with the same amount of effort, you could have made something that actually looked okay rather than giving us the borderline incomprehensible mess that we ultimately got. It just feels like someone took the final product, tried to add a poorly configured photorealism filter on top of it, and called it a day. The colour balance, the values of the shading and highlights, the weird blurriness everything seems to have... I just don't know what's going on there, or how it's the result of time constraints. I wish I had more insight into that process.

I've been saying exactly this since release. S1 was also simply impossible to top, even without the unfeasible schedule. It was an anime so good it got many people into the genre. I hope they get a reasonable work environment for S3 because the manga deserves justice and they are clearly passionate about the source material. Good video 👍

Watched OPM S2 for the first time earlier this year and I honestly wasn't that distracted by the lower production values. It was very much still enjoyable, the great animated bits did invoke S1's epicness and I liked the way the story development was handled. I guess it was all down to poor management from the higher ups, given that S2 took much longer than many have imagined, and audiences obviously expected more S1-like goodness. Hopefully, whatever is holding back S3 from happening right now gets eventually resolved and we do end up getting another quality season, as the manga has been insane lately.

I stopped watching season two after maybe 1 or 2 episodes (after waiting for it for years), as I knew what happened and I found the animation, color palette, etc annoying enough that I stopped watching. Maybe i’ll give it another shot, and obviously the studio did a great job considering the position they were in, but I really wish they had more time and funding to be able to match how lovely season one was.

I'm really happy you produced this video and dispelled a lot of common myths about the animation industry. I cannot stress how important time is when developing a series. AnimeAjay put it really best when describing time which was he compared the production process to a restaurant. Let's say you order some food and you expect it to be read in less than ten minutes. Sure, a talented chef could whip something up but it won't be as good if they had an hour or a week of planning for a meal. And considering how extensive the process is to produce a series like this, time absolutely matters. And in the case of OPM, as many have pointed out the talent behind that series was incredible for the first season. And also it didn't have to deal with a lot of BS with JC Staff. In short, it's unfortunate. Yes, OPM's second season story-wise is good but considering one of the prominent elements to its rise to fame was the stellar production work with the visuals/ presentation; it is hard not to notice. Still, I think OPM's second season is fine as its own thing. Here's hoping we get an eventual third season and it will be better.

I don't know what it is about this channel over its contemporaries that do similar things, but ForgottenRelics covers *exactly* what I want to know and see *exactly* in a way I can understand it. The editing is phenomenally understated (as in it does a perfect job with what seems like immense effort to convey information in an accessible but not a flashy way) and after I recently re-watched and was re-horrified by OPM season 2, it's good to get this perspective. Others have expressed ambivalence toward season 2, but when you read the manga next to watching the show, a C-minus effort like this really does a heavy disservice to some source material that was genuinely lowered by the poor product put out for it.

When i first viewed season 2 I thought the animation was below average in most scenes with a few great animation moments though the cgi arms for genos looks bad. Also they reused sound effects constantly. Season 2 of one punch man was immensely disappointing for me. But with the knowledge that season 2 of one punch was given much less time than season 1 I looked over the animation again and i think if the animators were given more time they could have created something good because they showed potential even with their VERY limited time. Its just unfortunate that opm wasnt given the time and attention it deserved.

Season 2 was so hyped for me. I fell in love with the manga, which I started because of Season 1's incredible performance. I had expectations as high as they could get. What we received, with at the time very little explanation, was an average level l of production, and an overall drop in quality. It wasn't bad, but with a few exceptions, it just wasn't all that great either. The difference in quality was so obvious to me, that I just couldn't enjoy the second season. I own every issue of the physical manga release. I own the Blue Ray for Season 1. I have watched Season 1 nearly 10 times all the way through. I have convinced many friends to watch the anime, because I was so enthusiastic about, and would literally set up days that I would come to them to watch it with them. I was, and to some degree still am, and huge fan. And yet, to this day, I have never fully watched One Punch Man season 2. I have seen most the fights, and I have watched about half the episodes all the way through, but I just don't really enjoy it. I would rather read the same scenes in the manga, than watch any of it happen in such a mediocre way in Season 2. For a long time, I thought this was just JC Staff being a lazy studio, with a poor budget, and less skilled staff. The truth actually makes me more upset than if that were the case. Knowing that they only had 6 months, and yet it still came out as good as it did, is actually impressive. At the same time, it shows that it could have been nearly as good as season 1 if they had been given the time. It's actually so much more disappointing to know that it was bad executive scheduling that ruined it. I feel so bad for the team that worked on it.

J.C. still a great studio, a lot of series were so enjoyable and different from the standard. J.C. wasn't prepared to the negative and toxic fans reaction. At least you can't put at the same level the work of the production of Madhouse with them. Two differnet studios, two different creative directions. Too much behind for average fan anime people to understand. And Murata style isn't the most easy mangaka to portrays in the anime without a solid director and production. People in the past didn't put blame on Masami Suda for the less details compared to Tetsuo Hara original art in Hokuto no Ken. But I repeat, now fans are always so a pain in the ass that sonetimes they can't recognize a solid product to a bad product.

What bothered me most wasn't really the animation itself. It was mostly the direction of timing and execution, which made a couple of scenes awkward. Like when Genos was looking for a solution while being pinned down in a staircase. He looked so goofy looking around and his reaction when he found an fire extinguisher. Or how Sonics fight ended so abrupt without a satisfying slapstick timing. (In Sonic's case, I think they made it a little better with its timing in the blu ray release, Heck I saw they made some better polishing overall on the blu ray, so I bought it)

We've got no idea when they started working on it or even who is working on it as far as I know so they could've put loads of time into it or they may only recently have started. Even though it feels like way longer it's only been 3 years since season 2 came out so I'm imagining it'll release somewhere between late 2023-mid/late 2024 since that's a bit longer than the gap between season 1 and 2

I couldn’t watch season 2 after season 1. I mean… I know the writing is still good, but OPM Season 1 was such an insanely amazing complete package. I think what elevated it beyond just another joke anime was the fact that it was consistently animated better than many serious action anime are. The fact that the anime/manga doesnt take itself seriously yet the anime still had that insane quality put into it made it stand out above and beyond. It’s harder for me to enjoy Season 2 at all knowing what it could have been.

It was 2015 when I first watched one punch man season 1 episode 1, it had amazing animation and humor that would excite me every time a new episode would come out. And when there was a trailer for one punch man season 2 I was so ecstatic and so much nostalgia flooded my brain. When I finished season 2 the storyline was interesting to me but I liked it regardless and at first the animations didn't really bother me I was just excited to watch the anime again since it's been 4 years since I've watched one punch man but I thought before the animation would be one of the best I've ever seen but it was pretty normal which wasn't really disappointing at first but I realized that they've been probably producing this and planning it for years and normal animations come out ? I was disappointed at that point but nevertheless I still loved the second season because of the humor and to make it even better this video explained in-depth why the animations were like that. And I fully now understand and respect the time and effort that they have put into season 2 and I can't wait for season 3 😀.

the garish shininess of metal was one of the main things that always stood out as an obnoxious intrusion to every scene for me. If they got rid of that I think it would have made some scenes look pretty good. The real frustrating part about this is that there was such a long gap of time between seasons and then they only give the animators 6 months to work. Hopefully season 3 gets the time it needs
