I’ve gone back to staying in hotels. Too many questions (and questionables) with Airbnb these days. These days hotels are offering great rates, convenient locations, around the clock services and security. Many are much cheaper than an Airbnb stay without the crazy fees and do it yourself everything. I like having friendly staff around more than suspicious or unaware occupants of a residential building.

We travel full time. AirBnb is far superior to hotels in every single way. You normally get a full kitchen, a much larger living space, and FAR cheaper. When you book by the month on AirBnb you usually get a huge discount. You also have to staff in your room "cleaning". We also always pick a place with an outdoor space. Hotels are for business travellers and people who like to spend lots of money on vacations eating out.

My husband had a 1 year work assignment in Cincinnati, OH which paid for us to to stay in a Marriott Residence Inn for that year. That of course gave us Platinum status. We like to travel several times a year and have not had to pay for a room in over 5 years. We also have enough points to gift stays for our grown children from time to time. We can’t say enough good about the superior service of the Marriott service!

Thank you for this. Its so annoying when travel bloggers only mention airbnb, and so many people like myself absolutely detest them, so its not helpful and just remind us how airbnb has screwed us over. I have found better alternatives traveling thru france that come to $45-55 a night consistently without all the extra fees, and a cleaning depending how long you stay, with a kitchenette. Airbnb isnt even price competitive anymore. Ive actually enjoyed going back to hotels.

The owner of the property is free to pass on these fees or not . The owner can also add a cleaning fee or not its their choice They can choose to use any other one the other similar sites such a VRBO or they can create their own website , they can just rely on word of mouth . The concept of Airbnb was a good one but a downside was that it removed housing stock from the local market in some cases. I remember being in Barcelona several years ago and the protests from the residents were intense. BTW, we were staying in a hotel.

My only other Air bnb was last summer (2023)when my daughter & I met to visit each other for the first time since Covid lockdown (she's now working in Japan) in the Santa Fe area. We rented a whole house/Casita in Lamy,NM. It was a short distance outside of Santa Fe. Much cheaper & quieter than if we had rented in Santa Fe. We had rented a car since we planned to tour around. So it wasn't a problem staying in the countryside. It was beautiful.

Many who have done that is because there is no partner program to create revenue if you are a content creator. It's all driven by income streams. We use air bnb a lot, and also book longer term short term rentals. We travel full time. In most lower cost countries you can rent easily a place by just showing up and asking some people who's got a place for rent.

Wow. My experience with Airbnb has been EXACTLY the opposite. I’ve stayed in MANY over the past 4-5 years and all have worked out well for me except for one. In that instance, I called Airbnb, raised hell, got my money back and went across the street to a hotel for almost the same money. In my experience, the cost of hotels in the USA far exceeds the costs of airbnbs. Europe seems to be a different story…I was able to find great hotels in Europe for a LOT less than in the USA. But even the few airbnbs I rented in Belgium (including a room in a castle) were cheaper than comparable hotel rooms.

I feel the same as you. I've had far better experiences with airbnb than I've ever had with a hotel. I also appreciate the homey feel of airbnb. It's important to read reviews, look for super host, and review their cancelation policy before booking. I even go to Google earth and look at the area before booking as a safeguard. Even if the host is in another area of the rental (separate quarters), I'd rather that over a hotel with multiple people, noise, and no clue who they are.

I no longer enjoy or trust Airbnb. In the early days, the properties were lovely and the owners made sure to include nice amenities and other comforts. The last one I stayed in? Single ply toilet paper! The shower curtain was ripped and off hooks. A terrible mattress and pillows. Plus I had to take out the garbage! I’m done. People got greedy as is human nature, amd ruined the whole thing. Also, as a solo traveler, the idea of people putting cameras in their spaces really freaks me out. No thanks.

Thanks so much for doing all that research...and yeah, I know, you're working on setting your own life schedule, but it's wicked cool to get the info from "professional travelers" who are making it all work. For me, I might be looking at that Marriott AX card....I do have their Bonvoy Visa and already had Lifetime Gold, but the extra perks at Platinum Elite would be nice too. Don't travel as much as I used to....I hope to change that soon!

You may have solved something of a mystery for me. I live in San Francisco, and I was pretty sure that someone had an AirBnb because there were often cars with out-of-state license plates parked on our block for long periods of time. If the AirBnb system is being phased down, that may explain why that doesn't seem to be happening nearly as often.

My friend found it fairly easy to get good reviews doing several local pet sits - now she doesn’t pay for accommodation at all - many of the house sits that she has done have been very low maintenance regarding caring for someone’s pet - she has deliberately chosen those sits so that she has lots of time to explore the area.

I like the strategy!! I don’t generate referrals so accruing the points fast enough needed for regular extended hotel stays is not really an option on a long term basis for me but using cards like the CSR on AirBNB stays to generate points that can then be transferred to travel partners for hotels stays seems like a good hybrid approach. I found Hyatt to be lacking in many cities forcing one to not stay in their preferred network frequently. With the new Marriott acquisitions, I feel like they're well placed, and available everywhere, and it doesn't hurt to have automatic Gold status with Amex Platinum. So my preference is Marriott, Hilton, IHG in that order.

Our first Air bnb was in Seoul, South Korea when my daughter was working there. We searched & read reviews on hotels in that area. We found that most hotels there were old & musty AND they really controlled the A/C (& their idea of A/C was really HOT for us Americans (my daughter had warned me because of what she endured at work!). We had never done Air bnb before. So she helped us find a really new/modern apt in a 3 year old building-- near subway, bakeries & even a 3-story McDonald's across the street (that had a fleet of scooters so heart attacks could be delivered!! 😂) It was a great experience & we could control the A/C-- even though we were instructed to turn it off when we left the building (only did that once!).

We use airbnb because of the long stay discounts. It depends where you are going and how much the owner is willing to discount it. We travel full time, always staying for over a month in one spot and we save a ton of money doing it that way. Average monthly costs for us are very low.

I understand what you guys are saying about Airbnb and why hotels would be more attractive but my issue is if you are travelling long term wouldn’t you miss the homely feeling that you can get in an Airbnb (not all airbnbs of course) that you don’t get in a hotel. In an Airbnb you get the opportunity to cook your own food. I get tired of eating out all the times and think I would need the kitchen and laundry facilities that come with an Airbnb. Interested to hear your thoughts 😊

Some of the hotels we will stay at will be like the Springhill or Staybridge Suites that come with a kitchen. In some countries in Asia we really don't cook much as the Airbnb's don't usually have ovens anyway. It just isn't their culture. It'll be interesting to see how we like it.

My first experience with AirBnb was in a South American country. We only booked with SuperHosts. The first place was great! The 2nd place was a 2 bedroom. It did have 2 bedrooms and 2 beds. Just no linens for the 2nd bed (we got there about 11pm so, we didn't realize until really late). The next morning, we saw the mildew on the shower curtain 😞 It was the weekend and there was nobody at AirBnb to talk to so, we just booked other accommodations. The 3rd place was nice but smelled musty. It wasn't until we were packing to leave and I tried to open a window that we noticed the mildew on all the window! AirBnb asked if we had contacted the host during our stay. The host said he never had complaints before. Not sure how some of these places are SuperHosts.

Great video - you have a new subscriber🎊❤️ I totally agree that to get a good price with Airbnb it is beneficial to book for 28 days+ and book early but….. I booked a couple of weeks ago for a stay in UK in 8 months time . When I pressed the reserve button Airbnb took the full price for the month - there was no option to split the payment. I took it to their customer services as a complaint - which proved fruitless. Their customer service was very non personal , you have to wait a couple of days for a reply and each time you end up dealing with a different (but very polite) customer service person. My understanding is that the Host does not get any of the money until you have checked in. Therefore I assume AirBnb will be getting the interest on any monies ! So it has put me off AirBnb and I will explore hotel loyalty programmes and see if that would provide me with another option. 😊❤

For example, if I retired today and was about to start my journey (hopefully May 2025), am I entitled to any of the benefits such as eating at the hotel, etc., when first starting out. Let's say I book 30 days at an IHG property, what are you entitled to during your first stay or are these benefits only realized after reaching your top tier loyalty status? I have an IHG card and platinum status. I've found mixed reception. Some places recognize the status and make you feel welcome. Some are more like, "whatever." Guess I'm not far enough in yet.

AirBnB is awful when there is an issue and you want to talk to Customer Service - they usually don't speak English well and don't get involved. I don't think they check the homes before they go live. I rather stay in a hotel and not have any issues to have to resolve while traveling.

Is there a specific way on these hotel websites to find just the multi-room suites with kitchens that would be actually comparable to airbnb? There's no way my husband and I can work in the same room when we're both on meetings big chunks of the day, and our health could not withstand hotel food as primary sustenance.

@@GroundedLifeFinances I thought so. This is the same in Europe as prices have risen extremely. If you are travelling for something like a month it’s not really feasible to eat out daily as it’s not just expensive but also difficult to eat healthy. So Airbnb?. ?

Yes, but they devalued the whole program when they switched it to One Key. You don't earn near as much as you used to. You used to get basically 10% back with hotels and now it's around 3%, so we moved on.

I had terrible two experiences with Airbn . One I. Mexico the place had mold all over and was trash everywhefe. Airbn told me look asap for another place in my own that’s it. The owner who don’t lived in the area Apperantly didn’t know about the conditions. He refunded the money and the property was shut down. I have to look on my own for a new place. Other was in Hungary Budapest . I arrived and the bedding sheet tells are dirty . Pictures didn’t match to the property at all. I made pictures send to Airbn but they didn’t do anything. I looked for a new place and fight for my money through my credit card . After 5 months I got bank my money but again not from Airbn. Both cases Airbn baled out protect or helping me.

If you own a rental and have been screwed over good…ties of seeing these people that may but usually don’t live in the community they are buying homes and apartments and renting them as a vacation spot. Schools and businesses are CLOSING because they have no local residents. Jobs are lost and other schools are effected. So not a fan. Think the location is huge and for someone’s personal gain to close down schools and businesses. Sad the greed Americans have.

I don't like Airbnb, mainly because of the people who run it rather than the hosts. I know it's supposed to be cool and out of San Francisco since only 2008, but it's overrated. The rates they display when you get into the website are misleading. Airbnb and the host tack on so many fees. With what you end up finally paying, you won't save any money compared to a hotel. In a dispute--and I had a few with less than candid hosts--Airbnb will stick up for the host, not you, even when you're clearly in the right. I'm not that hard to please, but I can't abide dishonesty. I can rough it occasionally. There have been reports of some hosts using hidden cameras and listening devices. Save yourself a lot of money and trouble and rent from a traditional hotel. Airbnb is a problem waiting to happen. RB
