Mike Baugh Hello Randi & Jordan.....currently deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan; and have enjoyed your videos. My dad was into airboats, and when he sold his medical practice, he purchased a brand new one from Diamond Back in FL.....stunning boat! Well, I got his old 19' Crumby fiberglass boat with an old Air Force 472 Cadillac Limo V-8 monster on it....spent several months just researching everything I could learn about the newer boats and technology; then started planning and tore the boat down to the hull and rebuilt the entire craft, to include the engine, new warp drive system, and even designed and wired the electrical. When I finished, it was beautiful!! I had more fun planning and rebuilding that boat than I ever would have had simply buying a new one. Skip the Kits!! Keep looking and find a boat you both like....then commence upon the journey to build your dream boat!! Sit down and plan each step of the rebuild...make it fun and creative! It will be the most fulfilling project you have every accomplished....hey, go for at least a 50 to 60 footer....bigger gives you more options. Perhaps the CoronaVirus will be over in a few months and I can get back home to Georgia! God Bless!

Once you have the funds, find a used but late model version of what you want. You'll avoid the huge depreciation hit that takes place in the first 2-3 years and can tweak the boat with a light refit without spending a ton of time or additional funds. I think that's the model that makes the most sense these days. Remember, a brand new boat has to be equipped with a lot of additional expense. It would be very likely that a new $300K boat will end up costing you another $100K to $150K to get it cruising. Purchase a 3-5 year old one for $225K and it will have most of that equipment that you would otherwise have to buy. Thus, your new sail-away boat will cost $450K and your 3-5 year used one will cost maybe $275K to sail away. The depreciation curve on the added equipment is even steeper than on the boat itself, so let the prior owner take those hits.

Just curious Jordan, how much of what you did on Freebie did you have previous experience doing? Look back at when you first started on your first boat up until today, You will be surprised at how much you have learned, what you have accomplished and how even your speech has changed as you have progressed. I’m obviously not related to you, but I am proud of what you have done, proud of how well you and Randi work as a team, and how proud of the way Randi has supported you through this adventure. Great job on all fronts!

I wouldnt mess with a kit catamaran, you are looking at two years build after having worked quite awhile to get there. Theres a vast difference between a Seawind and other French or S African cats which are much bigger with lots more volume If I were you and Im not, Id look at ex charter cats which will be coming off the market soon via failing companies in the present crisis. T Their loss is your gain, theyre just companies These would be Lagoon 38-44, Fountaine Pajot etc. Usually 3-4 double cabins not ideal for live aboard but a world away from Freebie have fun with your lives, stay safe

@@kylehutchison4216 I would be looking for bare boat companies that are falling over right now due to CV19 pressures, because to save themselves the first thing they will try to do is get rid of their old stock which should be what you are looking for. They will be under pressure to commit to deals and cash up or look forward to filing for bankrupsy. I dont know of any way to do that then to stay plugged into the dockside chatter, or even competitor bare boat charters who know a guy, that knows a guy etc. Once people get to hear you have raised an interest in buying a boat you might get approached that way. So go prepared with some kind of business card and make sure you make your intentions clear, thats likely for the local markets, Florida, San Diego, San Fran. Local markets are attractive because the boats are already here and US flagged. Other thing to check out is the boat market around bare boat charter areas, places like Mexico Panama or the Virgins or St Martin etc, because they are further from obvious markets and it costs money to crew them and get them back to the US were prices would be better. Clearly that means a research budget because you are going to have to fly in with tools and buy the girl a new hat :) Be advised that charter boats can go through a lot of abuse so try to make sure you check as much as you can before committing to survey out of the water. The really far out places might be out of reach as the Mediterranean, Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia Fiji Tahiti are going to be expensive by air and theres a need to know a lot about a boat before committing to such costs, although in water survey may be more ideal preliminary. Australia NZ prices probably prohibitive as theyre usually 1.5x to 2x+ US$ anyway. However US$ is worth much more there being 0/6 parity. But all hardwar you need is much more expensive. Anywho those are my immediate thoughts, ... cheers

@@z_actual I have to agree. Charter cats can be pretty good for a couple like them. It's not like they won't have a place to sleep if they decide to change one of the births to something else while they live on it. Plus with the one on the way now.

Thanks for the update and we all understand. I have some thoughts on content. Spend a little time discussing the electric drive system, battery and power management technology, and the things you would do differently if you had known what you know now, boat selection criteria with explanations of each of the positives and negatives and how you would weigh these when making a decision. Also you could revisit some of the tours of older boats and the new ones you have seen and point things out that stood out and why? There must be tons of information you could package in a format that would work on your channel like discussing from web site data, sailboat models you haven't looked at and features that just don't or really do make sense etc. You are both creative and engaging. You have the excuse now to delve into more detailed topics to help us understand from your perspective much that couldn't be included in the normal video segments. Be safe, be happy, and know that you don't need to apologize. Anything truly good is always worth the wait.

Congrats to the top 5! In terms of your future "make or buy" decision... I recommend "Buy"! Why....? Building a boat takes a long time. You can be on the water much quicker with new or recent production boat. If you build, you will find the investment you planned to build the boat with will increase beyond the plan (usually, by a lot!). This is guaranteed. It always happens. Prices of things go up, you make a change to your initial outfit plan, etc... Best of luck in what you decide. Stay safe. Hope we all get through this CV issue quickly.

You guys are adorable. You need to be working on getting some 1160 sailing demos and record those experiences! I'd also love to see a tour of the Southerly 54, and again if you could do a segment underway, that would be awesome. Everyone realizes that they can see broker's videos and company brochure videos, but y'all put a real comfortable human touch to it, and ask real questions about the details, the practicalities, and the brief thoughts on what repairs might be needed, easy or difficult. Good luck with all of it!

Hello Guys- actually visited a boat you had both had shown in a past video. Having had over 20 boats over the years and upgrading offshore oil rigs for a living my advice would be never buy a new boat. Of the 20 plus boats I have owned and upgraded I did purchase ONE brand boat. I have also helped many friends buy new. A boat is built at a factory where the manufacture purchases 80% of the items new that are then installed in the new boat. They in turn fabricate the hull and deck, interior and then install all the high dollar equipment. The reason I am saying this is that a new boat has to be used for some time (from 50 hours to 100 hours ) before all the small details and "bugs" are worked out. The problems will all be in warranty but you will loose a lot of boating time while the various mechanics are completing final work at your dock. A good used boat that was well maintained with between 200 hours to 1000 hours will have most of the systems either repaired, replaced, or upgraded and some run time. A used boat will also have had the first or second depreciation paid by someone else so the day you want to sell the boat or value it that lower cost can be factored. Also remember that living in South Florida and the keys is the worlds' playground for boats. I once was going to bring a boat here to sell and my good Broker friend said bringing a boat to sell in Florida is like bringing ice here. "There is ice at every stop". Having said that you have Fort Lauderdale in a few hours drive that can provide any possible part, tradesman, and companies to assist you for an upgrade or re-fit. I have used Chuck at SailorMan for tons of used parts. In summary I am not knocking new boat manufacture or new boat sales. They just don't have the depth, the staff or the ability to test each and every system from air conditioning to heads. It will you both doing the testing. Buying from an owner will provide you with the actual boat history and what was done along the way. I also have found that most past owners have given me their cell number and in a tough time a fast text and they can tell me what to look for or what they did in a similar situation. Seems most boaters are happy to help and is what we all as boaters seem to have is time to help other boaters. Sorry for the long winded message but with a 50 foot MotorYacht almost completed to sell, 4 dinghy's (can't have enough of these ) and a 56 foot steel hull motor sail in progress my gut tells me you guys will fully enjoy to take someones good boat and make it your new home. The current situation is not a good one for boating but you may find a small silver lining by even getting some owner financing along the way. Keep up the good work-- and soon we will all be back to what we do best- explore and share the dream.

With it you could (without much or any exposure to the virus) begin basic YT sailing lessons. After all, where do you start "Learning The Lines" but on a small, basic sailboat. I'm sure you could sail it locally with very little problem, in appropriate weather. Your viewers who are contemplating getting a sailboat (especially if they have younger kids) would love these kinds of basic HOW TO videos. Their kids (if involved) could also learn the basics right there with mom and dad. Scott W

Not all used boats need a ton of work. Any used boat needs work, but it doesn't have to be as extensive as what you've gone through on Freebie. If you bought a new boat, you would want to make changes/improvements to better fit your life style. After a year, or two, there would be things that you would need to fix/replace. It's a boat living in a harsh environment constantly under stress. Buying new is nuts. You lose a ton of money the moment your take possession. Find a boat in decent condition and fix what is necessary to start cruising. Bit by bit you can make all the improvements you want but at least you are sailing/cruising/enjoying it now instead of a couple (or more) years from now. I've been a mono hull sailor all my life (last one was an Ericson 39) and now I wouldn't consider anything other than a multi hull (preferably a trimaran). Sailing fast is definitely more fun than sailing slow. Not rolling like crazy at an anchorage is wonderful. Being able to sail with a minimum of heel is great. The ability to pull up to a beach is terrific, etc., etc.

Please do not get involved in building a boat. Many, maybe most, homebuilt multihulls end up abandoned in a boatyard, like that Outremer in RI. This was popular back in the 1960s and 1970s but very few people even attempt to do this anymore. Boatyard costs are prohibitive for one thing, but after years of labor and burning through tons of cash, you usually end up with a boat with no resale value. I once built an 8' sailing pram for a girlfriend's son. Boat turned out well and I published a magazine article about it but I also swore never again.

Ed Wiser, all relevant points but now ask yourself why is it like this? Why can't there be a system in the US similar to AUS where a boat can be built under Survey to ensure all standards are met and the boat can used for commercial purposes as well as insured?
@edwiser3547
@edwiser3547 4 жыл бұрын
@@SteelDoesMyWill Hi Luke, You can do exactly that and build to ABS or Lloyds standards, but it is not wise in recreational boats for very obvious reasons. Professional boatbuilders make major mistakes all the time. You should see some of the terrible engineering I have found in production boats. Can you imagine how much tougher it is for the newbie? Amateur builders are going to make mistakes. Lessons learned cannot be applied to make later boats better and cheaper. No economy of scale. They cannot buy at the same prices as manufacturers. The hull does not come out of a faired one-piece mold. Their skills, hence their results, are unknown and often lacking. Financing can be impossible and resale is difficult because the product has no recognition in the marketplace. It is a lot like a credit rating. You may be the most honest person in the world, but if you have never borrowed money and paid it back then you have no credit history. Lenders have no credentials to judge your credit risk so they rightly assume the worst. Same with a one-off. Why do you think modern warships are so expensive? Limited runs.

Top priority is for you two and your families to stay safe. As far as content goes, you will think of something. Be creative. You teach. Teach us something. Don't even think of building a boat. With the current situation there will be boats galore going for a song in thee months or so. Already charter companies are citing force majeure and not paying the owners. The owners will have to unload for whatever they can get. If you insist on building, or talking about it, reach out to "sailing emerald steel" and "SV Seeker" for a better view of the incredible amount of work needed. Another commenter made my point as well, you build for 2, 3, 4 YEARS and don't sail and the value of what you have built is far less than what you spent on materials. As in so many things, the hand craftsman simply cannot compete with the shop with 5 million in tooling. The exceptions to this are people like Leo Sampson (rebuilding Tally Ho) and Mads (Sail Life) where the dream is to build a boat. That is to say building is not a means to an end but a major part of the dream. For them it is following the dream on their own terms. Financially they are both crazy.

I have watched your videos from the beginning & while I applaud your interest in using non internal combustion auxiliary engines the footprint needed for solar exceeds the space reasonably available on any blue water sailing cat under45 feet. If you use electric outboards powered by LiFePO4 battery banks you still need either a diesel genset or a hybrid solar/diesel recharging system which increases the complexity. There exists Yanmar 50 HP diesel outboard engines that could be used in either single or twin wells that would minimize the sponson draft when tilted up. Pure electric auxiliary propulsion & its requirements for other than coastal day sailing use are just not feasible unless you have very DEEEP pockets or a stable of street corner entreprenaurs.

robert frederick 100% agree. We all want to be eco friendly but you cannot beat the energy density of diesel or the reliability of Yanmar engines and AGM batteries. I would still get as much solar as you can to charge the house batteries but stick with Diesel engine.

Not to be rude but if a refit isn't your cup of tea then building one definitely wont be.

All boat prices will plummet no doubt. On catamarans.... it is like owning two boats. All expenses sky-rocket. I am very happy on my 41ft steel ketch. I paid 10.000,- Euro for it. It needs work, but at 51 I now make money in the winter and am free from April to September. Life is simple and very cheap. I can easy keep up with the maintenance, harbor fees are doable. You will need to be rich. I am living like a king below welfare level :-)

Content Idea: Boat "virtual" tours of catamaran kits and self build plans, you could do one model per episode, would require some research to get photos/videos for the virtual tours, you could also go into the number of hours required for the build, skill level required, land/shed space required (and the rental cost in your area of the land/shed for the time to build) cost of rigging etc. most kits/designers have multiple models so change designers/company each episode but come back for the next model after doing a few other designers. this idea should hopefully give you enough content for at least 6 months.

hi guys, nice videos, I am Cris leaving and working in Italy. You are loocking for a kit catamaran, I think is a nice idea, but did you think it could be an idea to take a good cat what is available just to complete? ....

You two have the brains and the ability for a build, but unfortunately those are not the most important attributes required. With two abandoned refit projects to your credit thus far, you are simply not good candidates for completing a full build, and particularly not of such a huge project. You are both rational human beings and obviously understand the concept of "sunk costs" very well. If you attempt a new build, you'll once again reach the point where you realize that you still have a huge amount of time and money needed to be put in the project, and nothing you do is going to recover what you have already spent on it. And at that point, fatigued by months or years of building, your rationality will once again overcome the desire to finish the project. Maybe you'll still want to sail by then, or maybe you will be over it completely. Hopefully your marriage will survive it. I say this not because I want to doomsay or discourage you (I love big projects), but because I want you to be successful. Being able to finish a huge project requires a certain amount of stubborness, to refuse to consider what would be the most rational alternative of throwing in the towel and buying an adequate alternative that is turn-key or nearly so. MJ Sailing is an excellent example of this. Their refit of Elements went south almost from the beginning... They learned very early on, that the boat was not anywhere near how it had been represented, and I am sure there was a point where they probably could have cut their losses, and purchased another boat similar to what they'd had before, and resumed cruising no worse (and maybe better) off financially than they ended up at the end of the refit. They did not do this. They put their heads down, and powered through the rebuild on sheer stubborness, and finished with virtually all of their savings gone, a boat worth maybe 2/3 of what they had invested, and both of them 2 years older. They'll be going into the catamaran build eyes open, and with the confidence that they can finish it no matter what, because they have been there and done that. Maybe you guys have that in you too, but to commit everything to finding out in the face of some amount of evidence to the contrary is not really a plan for success. You guys are in a little different situation from Matt and Jessica too which works to both your advantage or disadvantage. They have the earned confidence and track record already, but they are enough older than you that starting over isn't really an option, once they commit it will be do or die for them, and best case they will probably be in their early 40s when they finish. You guys are young enough that you can fail, rebuild savings, and still realize your dream of cruising in your 30s. That's a great position to be in, and you obviously have a lot of confidence in yourselves, but there's a difference between that and having proven confidence, i.e. you having proven to yourselves that you can get through anything. You are going to need that to get yourselves through something as ambitious as a new build. My suggestion to you, would be to start with a less ambitious project that is still major enough to test your stubborness to complete it, and then take all of the confidence, knowledge, and experience that you earn into the big build. Build something like a little day cruiser up to 16+ feet or so, and finish it. It will make for great video, and how long it takes will tell you a lot about whether you should tackle the big build. If you get it done anywhere in the range of 6 months to a year and a half, then rock on into the catamaran build. If you don't finish it, or it takes you 5 years, then you will have learned a relatively cheap lesson and you'll also know that you need to keep saving your money and shopping for a near-new production cat.

If your teaching from home involves video conferencing you might want a movable partition to put between your desks or put one desk in another room. could get quite noisy if your both on audio/video calls at the same time, it's already been an issue for me when working from home. Good luck with the catamaran hunt, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the spirited designs (www.spiriteddesigns.com.au/designs) and they look like less hours than the Schoining and Grainger kits, I like the look of the spirited 380, which would give Randi a galley up.

Video idea. Work with channel viewer that have boats to shoot their own video and then send it to you. You take the raw footage and edit it with your comments into video you post. I have the O'Day 30 named Endeavor. I bought it in 2013 got it out of the boat yard sales it to the marina and it's never left the marina. My schedule and life have been horrible for having time to do things with this boat. I seen to go backwards with it

As I analyze your option it would be an slam dunk Build your own Cat reasons #1 your young enough #2 you can spread the cost over a 3 year period #3 when your done you own her out right . Biggy The only issue is do you have friends and is your skill level ready for a challenge? You both seem to have a flexible schedule ....that is simply the best asset period. Watch as you will see a dip in prices in the coming year then a steep climb $$$$ . Timing will be worth $$$$ Fairwinds from the @captains.chair
