They are all for show. That being the case. If both roads lead you to the point of being completely pointless. Why spend 2 to 8 grand on a lift kit when you can body lift it for 350. Just my 2 cents.

Body lifts are good for oversize tyres to gain gaurd clearance without fiiting ridiculously hig lift kits that will require massive changes to suspension components on the increasingly common independent front ends and in the case of 4x4s a diff drop kit to save cv joint damage. Small suspension work can generally avoid these problems

Just did a 2” body lift on my 2005 D22 and it was riding rough, so I made rubber dampers and installed them between the body blocks and the cab and it has no road vibration now. Just loosen the bolts on the steering shaft and allow the shaft to move up with the lift and retighten and that fixes the steering shaft problem. The exhaust has mounts on the body so it should just come up with the body. Drill new mounting holes on your rear bar and bull bar and that fixes the gap problem. 2” wont stretch brake lines or electrical wires. Problems only start when you go a 3” or bigger.

PA bodylift for 4th gen rams is awesome. Includes a steering column extension. $90 gap guards hide the frame upfront, the truck itself hides the frame well everywhere else. Exhaust tips have a swivel joint, you can loosen and point them up to hide the gap at the back for free... ran this kit myself for 3 years and 100000kms with no issues. Add a 2" spacer and you can run 35.5" tires with no trimming all for under 400$. I also installed it myself in the driveway with a jack and socket set.

Most jabronies don't understand that by doing a suspension lift you also change the rack and pinion angles on the drive shafts. Your driveshaft can handle up to 4 degree angle change, but anything over that will cause vibrations and premature wear on the differentials. This is why most suspension lifts are now steering closer to 5'' and 5.5'' vs 7-8''. What a body lift does allow you to do is to lift up your truck without messing with geometry of the suspension and keeping the center of gravity tad bit lower. So if you want a big monster lift, you would go with a 5'' suspension lift and couple that with a 3'' body lift to create a real big lift without having to elongate driveshafts and create who new set of expenses. Anybody who gets into 10+ inches of lift will have to deal with driveshaft and drivetrain issues when lifting that high.
@colteng9721
@colteng9721 5 жыл бұрын
Well said, when I got a 7 inch suspension lift I completely forgot about the driveshaft issue, mainly the front one. Welp 600 to get the t case cranked, but that's still not enough because the axle can't be rotated so the front ujoint is at an angle and the other end is a cardan joint so technically it has no angle, so end result...vibrations. Gotta get a dual double cardan front shaft 😐

As you say in the video, body lifts are vehicle dependent. I think there is a good case to be made for them in certain applications. For example, the old Toyota pickups (pre 95) have bodywork that is annoyingly tight to the frame. A 1.5" body lift makes rock slider installation easier and allows a gas tank lift with a new skid plate flush to the bottom of the frame. There are, of course, linkage considerations like the steering shaft that require some rework to do right. There are a few big advantages to a body lift on the old Toyotas. 1.) They allow for a minor drive train lift (higher T-case). 2.) They keep the center of gravity lower than a suspension lift, and that matters when you wheel your truck. 3.) Tire clearance improvements that'll clear 33s and chains. When used reasonably as part of a system of vehicle modifications, body lifts can be valuable. The aesthetic downsides like gaps don't really happen when you have a flatbed and an aftermarket bumper. Disclaimer: This is not engineering advise. I don't know your vehicle, its usage, or your design. You are on your own if you fabricate and/or install aftermarket parts.

I don't really care for a body lift but if someone only goes an inch or so I don't see the big deal. Most kits come with the parts needed to extend whatever needs extending. Some of us are stuck with body lifts to run the tires we want for off-road. Take my 2002 Expedition for example. You are stuck using a little two inch block on your coil springs, or like in my case you combine the two inch spacers with a three inch body kit. A man’s gotta do what he has to do to get those meats under his truck. My truck handles just fine and works exceptionally well off-road. I suppose I could do a solid axle swap, but it just seems unnecessary at this point.

My 2011 Ram 1500 with a 3in leveling kit and 3in body lift is just as tall if not taller than my buddies 6in suspension lift. I did all the work and saved myself a ton. From across the pond where I'll never own a big American pick up, a body lift appears to offer less downsides from a technical point of view. All the suspension angles remain as the manufacturer intended and the overall centre of gravity is lifted far less. The gap between the chassis and the body, may actually lessen rust problems, as wet salty muck cannot get trapped so easily between them and is easy to clean back out. Surely a steering extension piece to deal with the issue you described with a body lift, would be far easier and cheaper to manufacture, than an entire new suspension. But then maybe that is the REAL reason you hate body lifts, because they are relatively simple and cheap.

I'm considering one on my 95 K1500 now just to fit my tires a little better as I don't like what's involved with the larger suspension lifts on IFS Chevys. I wouldn't personally do it on a new Silverado but my 95? Sure

I hope yall realize that those suspension lifts on the Chevrolets do not add any suspension travel to the rig. Neither does a body lift of course. But a 2-3 inch body lift done properly and gaps hidden will ALWAYS ride better and me MORE reliable that a GM IFS with torsion keys. Ask me how i know. Ive been through 3 CV axles in 10k miles.

@@nezerac I finally just took the 2.5 inch lift off my Chevy s10. It was a torsion key lift with upper control arms. Went through 2 sets of tie rods and lower ball joints as well as the CV axles. But I also went offroad and beat it up. Most people with 4x4 lifted trucks don't so maybe that's why they last longer. I've gotten this S10 in axle deep mud, jumped it a foot or so off the ground on railroad tracks you name it. After the lift I still don't believe it was any better off road. Slightly better departure and approach angles, but new bumpers can provide the same benefits

If your manufacturer's transmission wiring harness cant handle 2 inches of lift, you have bigger problems than the lift. That said the only real issue with the body lift is typically the steering column extenstion. Make sure that is designed right and the body lift is the way to go for 80% of guys that just want to add an extra 2 inches in tire diameter.

Body lifts have more pros than cons while suspension lifts have more cons than pros..the only con about body lifts is depending how high you go the engine will sit bit lower under the hood for me that's not a problem, as for suspension lifts they are very costly...they ride rough & have drive line issues as vibration & much wear on the U joints which will have to be replaced much sooner then later & constantly having front end alignment problems which will wear out the tires very fast..the main reason why body lifts are not recommended by shops is being that they take much longer to install, off road shops do suspension lifts being they are not difficult to install & charge a ton of money on them therefore there is more profit into installing suspension lifts then body lifts.

Body lift is great if you want to put a v8 in a mini truck... Also keeps cg lower and suspension geometry stock (less wear). By combining a small suspension lift, body lift, and some fender trimming, you can get a fair amount of tire clearance for cheap. The biggest issues are looks and stress on wiring systems...

Body lifts can be ridiculous or properly implemented. On my Trooper it allowed me to install a bigger radiator, make better mounts for rock sliders, lift the gast tank and skid plate up 2", gain better access to the rear cross member for a bumper and install a 1" drivetrain lift which flattened the underbelly protection. But yea a 3" body lift on a street truck with 24's is stupid.

Ridiculous glossy paint with, of course, deep tint to match what we all expect, and rims that simply don't belong on a giant Silverado like that. I don't wanna go super tall and I want to retain as much of the factory ride quality as possible. I only plan on doing like 2" body and 2" leveling kit for the front. If there are wires and hoses that get stretched it should be minimal and will be really easy to correct with just 2"inches. Just snip and relocate some of the factory wire harness ties and get extended brake lines, stuff like that.

Now if I had a new truck I wouldn’t. I drive an old 90s truck and it’s easy. Same with my 80s Jeep. It actually had hockey pucks before I added an actual 3” body lift after a suspension lift 4” so this why I love old trucks!!!!

I can thing of more reasons why it would be dangerous. To suggest it is more dangerous solely on component stretch and steering is lack of research. If you truly want to help and educate people, compare cheap body lifts with cheap suspension lifts. You'll find both are dangerous. Then compare an expensive frame lift vs the most expensive suspension lift and you will find, the frame lift is safer in every way, less expensive and will look factory when done. The suspension lift will look pretty, raise your center of gravity, add stress to the drive train. But, you will get that custom ride and not that factory feel.

There are a few reasons these comments are not accurate. For one the older trucks, such as gm, factory had body lifts. Next, on newer trucks like the f150, when putting on a supposed suspension lift, the entire front crossmember is dropped down, same issue as gm trucks since the CK series. The comments are only opinion based. The body lift is for allowing tire clearance. Good body lifts have brackets and mouldings to cover gaps. The safety aspect mentioned at the end is also random comments because if you want to pull that card, then the suspension lift is also a major safety issue, not just to your truck but to others on the road, and specifically when you hit another vehicle, as you just place the frame and crash bars above the standard by which vehicles are engineered. I also want to point out, look at current model ram and gm trucks in the 4500 series, same cab and frame as the 3500 series, but a factory body lift.

I call BS, mainly because of the time and the amount of people it takes to install a body lift compared to a suspension lift. Yes there is more things to do and sometimes you need 4 people to help lift the body. But, when you do a body lift, you still retain a lower amount of center of weight for the lift. I would however upgrade any bolt to a grade 8 or better.
