Hey there, I did not grow up baptist , but grew up homeschooled and conservative with a whole mix of stuff. When I left the church I grew up in, I left community and I have not found that in non conservative churches. You could be going through many things and never even show up to church and no one even would know. There are so many little groups…one for men, one for women, one for teens, one for dads, one for singles, one for married…where is the one for the plain old family/church family??? Also I grew up singing acapella, but had instruments outside of the church. (Not coc) They gave away all of the hymnals in the church I go to now, and the contemporary music is wonderful, but there is no music for it because it’s copyrighted and only the band sings it. I feel some of this stuff is now what Jesus called the money changers in the church. It’s left the congregation. Where is the church community? Why do only the appointed church offices do things? I grew up where the members were the church and we had ability to give and serve. Now it’s hard to break into that inner circle to do those things…why is it sooo hard now?? 😢

It’s amazing how all this sounds so familiar. I was in this environment for about 7 years. It began with the Trail of Blood! My slippery slope out of it began when I chose to go to an IFB church that used the NKJV! One pastor was so controlling I had to get a transfer out of state for an excuse to leave the church. We didn’t want to talk about church history because all the early Christian guys were too full of error. Good grief. The most damaging thing for me was that I never learned to trust the Holy Spirit because we just followed rules. Thanks for sharing all this. I’m grateful for my current status!

Thanks for sharing your story Bones. Yeah getting out of IFB circles and influence can be insanely difficult emotionally and just logistically, but it’s worth it.

It's funny how we all come from some essentially pagan legalistic/liberal millennialist denomination when we first get saved and then move away from it as the Lord matures us. Praise Him for His Good Work.

Ugh! I attended Pillsbury, but I only lasted a year. Spent so much time in the dean's office. Labeled a troublemaker because I asked questions. I discarded what was presented as Christianity for many years. God graciously redeemed me through the Jesus Revolution in the '70's. I do think IFB is accurately label as a cult!

Great Video brother. I have always been a member of the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church,, because I was born in it and brought up in it. I hate the Legalism and Pharasaic ideology in it, BUT I LOVE THE PEOPLE IN IT, and serve the beautiful kids in Sunday School for the sake of Christ!! Not all Fundamental churches are like Westboro Baptist Church, there are all kinds of colours between WHITE and BlACK, some are very Lagalistic, others are less so. In my lifetime I have attended Penticostal Churches, Brethren Churches - Great video, God bless.

I grew up in a kjv only missionary Baptist my dad had to cut his hair he had long hair when he joined the church. The church started in my great grandmothers home. Women did not wear pants but I never heard of of the ifb label. Also they only used hymnal music and only had a piano. We left the church due to the church eventually closing after the pastor died and no one took his place. We joined a southern Baptist after that. I have not been back to a kjv only church since that time.

Yeah that sounds like a typical IFB church, although some don’t like the label so maybe that’s it. Thanks for sharing Alex!

Oh my brother, that book you tagged in here by John Dickson … I haven’t read the book, but as a Aussie I’m very familiar with him in the Sydney Anglican circles. He portrays this humble aesthetic, but THE SECOND someone disagrees with him he shows how arrogant he really is (referred to me as “sub-Christian” for being postmil). He is one of the main guys leading the charge in the Sydney Anglican Church for women pastors, and moving away from typical ‘Reformed’ views. I’ll also add for context, the Sydney Anglican diocese is the largest conservative denominations in the Sydney area (then followed by general baptists (liberal, or liberal leaning), and NSW Presbyterians which are similar to the Sydney Anglicans as majority of the ministers go to the bible collage. Aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway, I love seeing married couples do things like this, it warms my heart seeing the interactions

Fellow Washingtonian here. I don't know Greek and Hebrew, but have a great app on my phone that is essentially an interlinear, and has the strongs concordance.
