In contrast to sadness, anger is an emotion that prompts the characters to actions. Angry characters tend to be very active within the narrative and thus possess a great deal of agency over the story. It's a strong base motivation for behavior that feels both natural and cathartic.

You hit it on the head, but I would argue there are two other emotions that are just as motivating/character driven and action focused: Fear and Shame. Some people(which idk if you are “some people” or not) actually mistake shame as a Part of fear, but rather shame deals with the meeting, exceeding, or missing the mark of one’s Image. Whether that is a self created persona or an image grafted into them by the populous doesn’t matter. Think Griffith when Guts left the band of the hawk, something about him leaving made Griffith need validation over his image of “Perfection”. Someone important to him in one way or another left him, and he needed to validate himself in a moment great shame, as people don’t leave something that is “perfect”. While Fear comes from the believe that everything is dangerous, and must be dealt with in specific ways. This could be from the obsessive investigation, this could be from forcing a secure space, or if could be from escaping into the enjoyment. All of which are “action”, but yeah Anger is definitely a real motivating emotion. Edit: I hadn’t even watched the vid yet when I saw this… xD

It hit different when he's giving God the 2 piece with a biscuit and he screams "this is for making my daughter cry!" That hit different. Would love to see Asura come back, but it's more likely he'd be a guest in a Capcom fighting game than him ever getting a solo title again.

Yo, you are legit getting near the roots of a really good psychological theory about three really motivating emotions. The whole Shame, Fear, and Anger thing… In this theory, Shame is about how one deals with their Image, Fear is how one moves in a “dangerous” world. Anger is how you assert your “ego”, ego not the sense of confidence or arrogance, but the “self”. Each one of these has three archetypical ways you deal with it, and they can connect to each other via “wings” or “fixes”. For example, you could deal with anger through needing to reactively express it, so it doesn’t build up and force you to explode, thus being more likely to just in general be a more “dominant” or assertive person. But, you could also identify very much with what parts of you are “vulnerable”, “weak”, or “imperfect”. This combination essentially creating a person who is assertively negative about everything, but not out of depression but from a sense or need to be genuine and open about one’s flaws.and this is just a combination of Anger and Shame, not to mention adding fear into the mix. Where in addition to that they might still feel the need to have fun and enjoy themselves in a world that is dangerous, while they are weak and vulnerable. Avoiding the negativity of how dangerous those vulnerabilities are, despite recognizing them and being open with them. Thus creating a very upfront, blunt, and negatively open person, that still tries to get the enjoyment in life, disregarding the dangers their actions pose to themselves and/or those around them, purposely trying to ignore those dangers.

Anger is a secondary emotion meaning it is rooted in some other emotion you don't know how to control and process. so instead it becomes an action through anger. Think of any instance in which anger is justified, it will always be in response to emotional pain that in the moment you are unable to handle. It is a useful tool, but if you don't know how to quell that anger and resolve the primary emotion it has come from you begin to damage yourself. As that unresolved trauma grows it expands outward to your loved ones and eclipses who you are. Godo said it best in that anger is the place people go when they can't look sadness in the eye without wavering.

Angry characters don't force you to analyse their character or study their actions, you can just appreciate what, on the surface, seems like a one-dimensional character but in some cases be much, much deeper than that without needing to act like a melodramatic twig. In summary, they are the poor man's three-trick pony, except we never get to see the first-trick.

8:43 "when you see a character mellowed out, matured, more calm, it provides an incredible look back on how far they've come since the beginning of the story" My favorite example on this regard is eren in the marley arc(hobo eren). For a character who's nicknames were "angry german kid" or "suicidal blockhead", seeing his maturity not only in his appearance, but in his demeanor, how calm, understanding and wise he has become. Great stuff man....(only to revert back to a more toxic version of his old self in the next arc)

We all love seeing our favorite characters going berserk..or in other words getting angry.. Anger is something that can temporarily help someone reach their desires e.g :(defeat an overpowered enemy) But anger has an unfathomable amount of flaws and negatives that makes it really "weak" and "Vulnerable".. Then again just the sight of a character going berserk really fills the eyes of the viewers pushing them even further into the story which is a really good thing

I honestly would like to see a character who got angry because they have either heard or seen the result of something traumatic, so they get mad. Having a character that is able to sympathize with the hurt, and is able to accurately imagine their pain, then in a way they just did the next best thing to experiencing it themselves. Try to picture what kind of pain a person went through by imagining yourself in that situation, in high detail. The smell, the senses, the sights. Hell, we can make our mouths water just by thinking about food, despite there not being any. If someone was able to do that, and still stay relatively calm, they have excellent self-control.

honestly, god of war 2018 was such a well done game. when a character that ran through olympus killing every god he came into contact with chooses NOT to fight someone at his cabin in the woods even after that dude slapped him up a bit, you know some shit has changed inside the man. "you do not want this fight" "leave. my. home." Kratos reluctantly picking up the blades of chaos one more time gave me LITERAL FUCKING GOOSEBUMPS.... like, the OG audience knows the pain that hes gone through because of the blades (ares, technically) - but that his unbridled rage is the only way to protect his new life in the norse realms... you see the inner conflict rise to the surface and you can feel the violence coming on the horizon. this is made apparent with the weather/environmental change as you head back to the cabin, as well as Athena's ghostly return. "you will always be a monster" "i know...."

People like to harp on about Dragon Ball's many forms and power ups, but the catalyst for them - more often than not - is rage, sorrow, fear, desperation, and so forth. It's the manifestation of a characters extreme emotions; and I think - as silly as people can sometimes think they are - that's what makes those explosions of power and revitalised resolve pretty damn hype. It usually happens after a great deal of adversity, too, which adds to the catharsis of the moment. I also think it's why the screaming that the community also likes to take jabs at isn't bad. It's an outpouring of this emotion. It's also about digging deep in order to tap into their incredible power. I imagine transforming requires a great deal of effort to access - like lifting heavier and heavier weights - and to get there they push through the strain on their bodies to achieve it until it becomes second nature (like with how easy it is now, regarding Super Saiyan). When people are a bit vocal (yells and grunts) in the gym you may find it amusing, but you also understand and respect how much they're pushing themselves mentally and physically. I'd say one of the core components of Dragon Ball's power system/battles is raw (unbridled) emotion and catharsis.

Sorry I know this is not entirely related to the video, but ai have been thinking on the purpose of art from an evolutionary perspective and realized imagining stories could be a way of processing our own emotions. People get angry at people. Making up stories let’s us better explore the roots of that anger. Become more self aware of why. Then you can share than info with others who can develop more self awareness reading your story. Stories and art are so valuable because they allow us to learn more about how we think. Even if the people in the stories go through situations we would never be in, it can prepare us for situations in which we develop similar emotions. We can learn acting rashly from anger can lead to terrible long term consequences. We can learn what emotions may have inspired the anger in the first place. That would be so much more difficult to explain in normal language. Sorry for the ramble.

The book Catcher in the Rye has a classic example of the Angry Character. The movie Taxi Driver also a good and classic example

What I love about angry characters is their self destructive behavior and means of achieving their goal. You want to see their objective fulfilled but at the same time wish they find their inner peace before their anger proves to be beyond mental and physical to be healed.

I used to have angy issues when I was younger I still have it but now I take it out on myself in the gym, it's not the healthiest thing since I can push myself harder and injury myself just like recently with my forearm. But it's better than accumulating and exploding over little things, and seeing characters doing this taking out the anger into an enemy or whatever it gives you satisfaction since you can't do it without going to jail.

An underrated angry character that I absolutely LOVE is Takeshi Sendo from Hajime No Ippo. He's one of the best examples of how to use anger as a tool. Naturally, Sendo is wild and bombastic person. He's a good guy, but his personality can be a bit much for people and this carries over into his boxing style. He often is quick to rush in with no defense and throw his boxing skills to the side preferring to brawl, but when he gets PISSED is when he shines. There are moments in the series where he's being outboxes by an opponent to the brink of losing, but then Sendo will enter a state of "concentrated fury". He quiets down, gathers himself, focuses, uses his actual skills that he's accumulated over the years and KOS his opponents. He's so much fun.

I can see what you mean about how good it feels to watch angry characters, as someone that had struggled with anger issues, to read Berserk and to see Guts to come and go from his own anger after bearing unspeakable trauma, I could see myself in bits of that anger and therefore it felt like I let out that anger vicariously through him as a fictional character. But I guess it also depends on what kind of character they are, I can empathize with Kratos and Asura, but I don't relate to them as strongly since their life experiences are way too different from what is immediately familiar to me. It also comes from characters who aren't necessarily 'cool' or 'strong', they can be weak and even sometimes the antagonists of the story, but their anger captivates me if I can understand where it's coming from. I don't know. I also do get one hell of a catharsis when stories actually dare to portray female characters going apeshit and horrifying and violent with their anger like male characters are more often allowed. Gosh that's beautiful. Anyway, good video.
