Great video Mr. Murphy, Professor Dungeon Master mentions that after each session he asks his players what they want to do next session.

Great video! Loved your advice about letting your players make decisions based on imperfect information, and don't worry about a 'right' answer. I really tried to instill this attitude in my players but when things went wrong they would feel bad. Then I told them things would go wrong no matter what, and that didn't make them feel better! Now I say nothing that could judge their past decisions, I just ask what they want to do now, and this works really well.

Gamemasters: your players are there to play WITH you not for you. That's why you need to find out (like you said) what they want and not just give them a hand out of "things" they are supposed to care about. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

When we played my freshman year in college half our group was girls. We also played almost every night, but not until the GM was sure my homework was done.

I'm sort of designing my own game, and I ran my first playtest and my players clearly weren't having fun. I was about to explain to them why this was supposed to be fun, but then I thought to myself "If I need to explain why it's fun, it must not be fun." I think DMs tend to have this as a problem they don't always think about, it seems fun to them, but the players aren't into it. Must be the players fault. The players should drive the game, like you're saying! Run a game the players want to play. Like I was running a Warhammer game recently, and the players got a job to steal some documents, but as they were doing their legwork, to add a little flavor, I hinted that their prospective patrons might possible be involved in a chaos cult. Well they ran with that, I just put it in there for a little flavor, but they dropped the heist and went full on investigation mode! The game was a lot of fun because the players were motivated, getting to do something they wanted to do, and I was having a blast because hey when isn't an evil cult fun to run? The problem with modules, and the problem with "story" or "narrative" games (they're all story and narrative) is that it can restrict the players and force them to engage in something they don't care about. Tabletop games are great because they aren't computer games, you can do the unexpected, so do it!

Did they give you feedback on your game? If they seemed into the concept beforehand, it might be made to work after some adjustments.

@crunchydragontreats6692 Five levels deep into the darkest dungeon, party to the wizard: "What do you mean we are out of torches?! You had, ONE, job!" a body juddering roar is then heard, just as the last ember of the last torch fades out. 😳🤣🤣🤣

I got to go over to my best friend for Thanksgiving, we've been playing RPGs since the 7th grade, but unfortunately for work schedules for his boys and their friends we only got to play one night, but it was a game!

I used to get so mad that my players never took the game seriously/drove it in the way I expected when I first started GMing, since then I gave up on grand narrative campaigns or in-depth character study. 5 years later my group and I just finished a 3 year epic by slaying the ascendant son of Lolth and their funeral for the dead nearly made me cry. The campaign started as a goofy quest to sell some statues. I feel like great campaigns come when you don't expect them.

Great video Jim! If I had women that were interested in playing in my game, they would be more than welcome. I am currently playing in a Dragonbane campaign, and we have three female players and they are great. They outnumber the male players at the table. Happy Thanksgiving!

My campaign is PC driven. My NPC adventuring party has an agenda. My political factions have agendas. My townsfolk NPCs have wants and needs. But all of that can and has been affected by the choices my PC make. My players recently realized that a choice they made five or six sessions ago had altered the outcome for a particular group of folks. --Apparently, genocide is not acceptable to my PC paladin who started the campaign with the “they’re all goblins and need to die” attitude. -I know this player well and knew that they wanted the character to have an opportunity to show mercy towards the innocent. Now it’s up to the PC to decide what to do about what has been done. Also, the local dwarven cousins that run a smithy are now local celebrities because they went on an adventure with the PCs. -yes. The PCs can recruit local NPCs. Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friends.

Jim your videos are in same parts inspirational and depressing to me. I don't think I'm fit to DM. As Matt would say, I have a highly developed notion of the world and the rules I run. And that's great. But I'm also so very insecure and sensitive, running the game stresses me out so badly. I tried and tried. I kinda wish I was there with you in the 70s, but I also know as a transwoman I wouldn't have survived. Have a great Thanksgiving.
@jimmurphy1591 Жыл бұрын
You would have survived. You can also do the DM stuff. Like the 70’s. Being a good friend and DM would get you through. Also remember that everyone looked different and All these movements starred then and were embraced. Add shoulder length hair, a Neru shirt, bell bottoms, and a bush jacket on me. There is always strife, just ignore the haters. It’s themselves they hate. Game On!
