Hi Joe, I have read Pope Peter. Brilliant book on why Peter had primacy amongst the apostles. I was a little disappointed, however, that there wasn't much explaining how that authority was passed on down the line to subsequent popes. As a Catholic that seems to be the big issue for my protestant friends. Any thoughts on volume 2 to address this?

Question re: papacy: Shouldn’t the pope be an example of sound doctrine and Christ-like character as the main public shepherd of the flock? And if so, shouldn’t there be a process to disqualify him if he is unfit to lead as the spiritual leader? It boggles my mind how some of these guys stayed in the papacy despite their character/doctrine.

@@coondogbob All i'm saying is that if the papacy is the only thing he needs to reconcile to become catholic then he is woefully ignorant (in the true sense of the word) of what the rcc teaches. He'd have to ignore Jesus in the eucharist, the false gospel rome preaches, the nature of penance and purgatory. The papacy is on the list but it is by far not the most important.

@@kevinmullee6578 Sorry, but every time catholics try to prove the papacy its never from the standpoint like Paul teaches in the pastorals where we find deacon, elder and overseer. Its always a collection of verses trying to see Peter in some elevated position; 'you are peter and upon this rock', 'feed my sheep', he heads certain lists....and there ya go, peter is pope. This is the very definition of cherry picking. And its what they all do because its all they have.

St. Ignatius: He is also responsible for the first known use of the Greek word katholikos (καθολικός), or Catholic, meaning "universal", "complete" and "whole" to describe the Church, writing: Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful to baptize or give communion without the consent of the bishop. On the other hand, whatever has his approval is pleasing to God. Thus, whatever is done will be safe and valid. - Letter to the Smyrnaeans 8

For all the comments here who complained about Pope Francis, you should read about Pope Stephen VI who had his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed, tried, de-fingered, briefly reburied, and thrown in the Tiber. But again, it's not about the man, it's about the Seat of Peter.

The question was posed, "How are we to know what the Christian faith actually teaches?" God has given His Holy Word: "Thy word is truth." God has given the Word of God: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." God has given the Holy Spirit: "But when He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth." Only the Godhead is infallible. To say that anyone who has been born of the corruptible seed of Adam is infallible is treading upon some very dangerous ground.

Hmmm... you know this is something I’ve given a lot of thought to. I am ok with it all, and we understand that Rome was preeminent amongst the churches as Orthodox. But can we really agree with infallibility of the pope? That’s the one thing that gives me pause. I affirm Petrine primacy, I affirm the preeminence of Rome, I accept unity with the Bishop of Rome. Is he infallible??? Was Peter infallible??? Why is the Pope infallible when Peter wasn’t. I’m just showing you how Orthodox think, not actually attacking Catholics, we need to think about this, all of us that cling to the ancient faith.

@Django Ferreira-Hmong. Thank you for your comments. The Pope is not always infallible. Whatever he says on a daily basis, his sermons, his teachings etc are persuasive because he is a priest and also the leader of the Catholic Church. Persuasive but not infallible. These remains his own personal reflections and teachings just like Pope Benedict wrote in the preface to his book that he is writing in the capacity of a theologian but not the Pope. This applies even if the Pope doesn't say this explicitly. The Pope is infallible when he speaks Ex Cathedra on matters relating to faith and morals subjected to the following conditions 1. There is no new revelation. All divine revelation has been fully revealed. So no new dogmas. There can be development of doctrines but not dogmas. The Assumption of Mary is not a new dogmas but this is believed by early Church fathers as oral teaching and Sacred Traditions. 2. The Pope offcially proclaims from the Chair of Peter using the authority to bind and loosen as given by Jesus and exercising the keys to the Kingdom in Matt 16:18 given by Jesus. The keys to the Kingdom is the Prime Minister ship of Jesus's Kingdom just as the prime ministers of Jesus's ancestors - all Davidic line of kings have the keys to the Palace. 3. Proclamation is on faith and morals only. So there is a caveat and restriction of Infallibility. The Pope is not a demigod. He is human. He has faults and he goes for confession. He is infallible only using the divine authority bestowed by Jesus under the 3 conditions above.

Peter was able to promulgate infallible doctrine, he did in 1st and 2nd Peter Epistles and in the Council of Jerusalem where he abolished circumcision and the dietary laws as binding to the faithful (Which he did alongside the other Apostles). But by default Peter wasn't infallible, only when acting as Master of the Faith and invoking the graces of the Holy Spirit that Jesus prayed to the Father to give Peter in Luke 22. Where He said: “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you (The Apostles) like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” While all the Apostles had authority, Simon Peter received a grace unique to him. The other Apostles were also able to teach infallibly given that they were filled by the Holy Spirit in a special way more powerfully than their Bishop successors, however Peter was the Chief Apostle, the prime minister of the Kingdom of Heaven because Jesus, the King, gave Peter alone the keys of heaven. Currently the Pope can only exercise this infallible power formally and usually with the counsel of the Bishops. The other Bishops, Catholic Patriarchs and Cardinals can only teach infallibly but cannot establish new teachings binding to all the faithful unlike the Pope. They also have the authority to "Bind and Loose" regulations, disciplines and restrictions on their dioceses as long as they do not contradict definitive teachings promulgated. Infallible teachings can only be about Faith or Morals. Since Orthodox Leaders cannot officially agree on matters relating to these (Communion is a matter of Faith and Morals for instance among others) they cannot claim infallible authority. Even if they stuck solely to their earlier infallible traditions they would eventually become stagnant because new moral issues and new disagreements about the faith begin to appear (Contraception, use and development of new technology, environmental policies, church law...). If the Pope says his own theological theories and personal opinions, that is not infallible teaching unless He unequivocally proclaims it to be. If a Pope has grave sins and is generally a bad person the power of the Holy Spirit will prevent this Pope from destroying the Church by formally teaching error or validating sin. Infallible power is protected by the Holy Spirit, the Church and the Pope are very careful in using it, for this reason a Pope will rarely use this power unless he has consulted the Cardinals, Eastern Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops, similar to how Peter gathered all the Apostles in the Council of Jerusalem, only promulgating doctrine by "himself" in his Apostolic Letters, in which he may have consulted his community in Rome and Bishop successors who later became Popes: Linus, Cletus and Clement. In the case a definitive teaching is about to be proclaimed which could lead the faithful into Hell, the Holy Spirit would have to intervene and stop the Pope in order to protect the Church. It was explicitly stated by Jesus: "And I tell you, you are Peter(Petros/Kepha), and on this rock(Petra/Kepha) I will build my church, and the gates of Hades(Hell) will not prevail against it." Mt 16:18 If the original Greek text "Hades" is taken to mean as the realm of the dead then it would mean "Gates of Death" which points to an inability of the Church of being destroyed either by human powers or demonic. The inability of the Church of being destroyed is tied to the Holy Spirit and the Pope somehow as in the case of a catastrophe having a hierarchical church structure helps in it's survival, which is part of the reason why the Vatican is an independent theocratical country that is legally separate from the laws of Italy, a privilege the national Orthodox churches do not have. When a Pope dies there are still Cardinals/Patriarchs from all over the world with Apostolic power that have the potential to become Popes. Though while there's no Pope, nobody has the authority to canonize a Saint or formally promulgate new faith and moral doctrine. Since the Holy Spirit does not contradict itself, there can only be a single Christian institution in the world that is protected, as all others would have to be in disagreement at least in an essential matter of their doctrine of faith and morals binding to the faithful, since the Lord places higher priority to these than ritual rubrics or general disciplinary or organizational matters (As in the case of Catholic Religious Orders and rites).
