Two ideas. Put the couch in front of the wood stove to catch the heat. So great in the winter! (FYI; Big winged backed chairs were designed to do that) And While you plumb the shower on the inside on the same outside wall also plumb an outdoor shower. I did it in my house Amazing. Saves cleaning in the summer and it a place to wash dogs and stuff without getting your house messy. Enjoy!!!

I wouldn't think you would want to have a sofa (especially a sleeper) right next to a wood stove. You would need to be especially mindful of clearance between the stove and a flammable sofa/couch/soft furnishings.

@@BrooklynAlien I put a clock above the stove in our previous home. It doesn't take long for buildup to occur; even with regular cleaning. Ended up tossing it when we sold the home. Just wasn't worth that final cleaning. Witnessing that incident at my friend's house was actually mesmerizing because of how everything fell into place at just the right (wrong) time to happen.😳

As a retired pro creating tech multimedia training videos, I can see how much time, love and creativity goes into each of your video projects.... old timers thought: I know the season is changing and with the warm weather comes massive amounts of work...... just make sure the scamp trailer is fully stocked for an occasional blast off to a local swimming hole to decompress for 24 to 48 hours... Hint: When your dogs stop following you around the house build and start hanging out in front of the Scamp then you know what they are thinking..... let´s go screw off !!!!! 🤣🤪 ....John

Good call out. Interior is the best placement, but I will say that I have my piano on an exterior wall since that’s the only place it fits in my house. I just keep it several inches away from the wall to allow air to flow well behind it. That seems to keep it from the harshest effects of our temp changes, and I’m in an extreme climate. I think that’s the next best advice when there is no other place to put it.

One small thing that I've really grown to appreciate in my house in Japan...the toilet is not in the bathroom. It's a separate water closet. A toilet and a small sink. It's very nice to not have a stinky commode in the same room that we bathe in. It's also convenient when guests are over. If someone is showering or bathing, no one has to wait to use the restroom. Shower, bath and a sink with cabinet/mirror. We opted for smaller bedrooms and kitchen to accommodate the restroom. The missus said all we do is sleep and um, have discussions in the bedroom so no need for anything massive. Same with the kitchen. Prepping and cooking food. No one is hanging out there. Opened up the house layout for more living room and office space.

A lot of homes have "homey" kitchens where family spends time. Kitchens are often the heart of the home. Much of their time will be spent prepping food, in fact they may have so much prepping that they'll want an outside kitchen to use in the Summer to keep the heat out of the house. When you make most of your food, you spend a goodly amount if time in your kitchen. I agree with separating your toilet into its own room. I know any bathroom is a luxury to them, but I hope they watch some ideas you had about separating the toilet from the shower.
@tinydancer7426

I like the toilet design that includes the small sink on the top of the water tank for hand washing after toilet use. Great way to conserve on and recycle the handwashing gray water since it then drains into the tank, ready for use in the next flush.

One thought, as someone who is both very sympathetic to your minimalist ideals, but also has children: your washing duties (dishes and laundry) will at least double with even one child, because children get you messy, themselves messy, and the new things you have to buy that you never owned before messy. Your disposable time will also reduce drastically. That means that the economics of owning an electric washer/dryer and dishwasher will change. I’d just encourage you to make your kitchen and laundry space adaptable, so that if you do want to add these things later on, it’s easy to do and doesn’t require much ‘undoing’ of recently built cabinetry. I love the project. It seems really well thought out and very beautiful!

I second that! I have two teenage sons in HS and as much as they eat we sometimes have to run the dishwasher twice a day. They themselves do 2-3 loads of laundry each per week from getting dirty playing sports, etc.
@cecilemagnier7113
@cecilemagnier7113 Жыл бұрын
Think also of the resale value of the house. Most people would definetely want a laundry machine so it is good to have an allocated space for it in your bathroom (or in the kitchen, or in the storage area). It is probably easier to add a dishwasher to an existing kitchen as cabinets have already the right size ?

Just a suggestion - Don't put anything above your kitchen area that you don't want to get greasy in anyway. If you fry stuff it will end up on whatever is above it. So maybe not books, but maybe unused kitchen items or things that you don't mind washing once a year. =)

Have you considered placing the wood stove in a more central location in the house? It might radiate heat to more of the space that way. I think I'd avoid placing furniture next to the wood stove to prevent potentially burning fabric or even someone's arm, if they're resting it on the arm of a sofa or chair and accidentally touch the stove.

I'm imagining them moving furniture as they change seasons for just this reason. Besides renting a few times and the occasional visits to family, it's been years since they've lived in houses full time. If you keep your shower curtain pulled out the length of the tub after the showers are done, that will really help with the mold issue. Also, you can spray the inside of the curtain with a fine mist of bleach+water mixture, about once every week or two, that will take care of that for you.

There are more durable PVC free shower curtains that can go in a washing machine with white vinegar to get rid of (most) discoloration. A suggestion. Not sure what your high and low temps are? Have you thought of putting in a mini split? Lots of tiny house people have them. We put one in our manufactured home in NH. Hubby did something I have never seen anyone else do. He did research and discovered how to put the air handler in the middle of the ceiling instead of hanging it off the wall. It's called a cassette and it has louvers so it blows in 4 directions. We put it in the middle of the house. I can send photos if you are interested. It would be easier to run the piping before you finish closing in the house. We use it mostly for air conditioning in the summer but more and more we use it for heat in the winter. (We have solar so it's pretty economical.)

Fun to see your dream coming together! Other than cost is there a reason you didn’t consider wool insulation? I would keep the piano on either an interior wall, or pull it away from a wall if there’s a corner free. Changes in temperature and humidity are tough on instruments. If possible, I would also recommend not putting the sofa against the wall. If there’s a space you’d like to visually separate or a corner, you can put it askew? My ex-husband and I started building a home in 1989 on 5 1/2 acres. We built it ourselves from the ground up. Two stories 2600 ft.²… Took us four years. Couple things I would’ve changed. One is I put a lot of time, money and energy into a clawfoot tub that rarely got used. I would’ve made our staircase wider and our front porch larger. It’s Northern California, so it’s not like we had to get out of nasty weather.😊 We absolutely loved our big center island. I had a stove top and the counter could seat six to eight. When we entertained all stools were always full. I also loved having a second sink. I realize you have limited space so for now it doesn’t look like an option. Wise of you to consider the future and build your structure with that in mind. We had French doors all the way across the back in the main bedroom French doors with two side lights in the great room two sets of French doors and two sets of opening side lights. The sunroom is all glass with a slate floor that absorbed heat. We installed an interior slider and would open it up in the evening to provide passive heat. I loved all of the skylights we installed. The issue with skylights is most people don’t flash them correctly.

Armoire with shelves and racks instead of a dresser upstairs. Dressers look cool but are a pain to close/open or see what’s in them when full. Shelves and Ross allows you to see everything with ease and access. You can use baskets to store underwear and socks. We abandoned dressers years ago and have never looked back. An armoire allows you access more space vertically- and you can add a mirror(s) making the space feel bigger.

Elsa, have a look into Feng Shui. I disregarded it when renovating my flat, but then, years later, I stated watching a guy here on KZbin. He is transforming peoples' homes and uses rules of Feng Shui. I was amazed how, even through the camera, the spaces feel better after he moves the furniture around. He is also explaining the concepts, so I reconfigured the furniture in my flat as well. The rules made me go for a configuration I would never think of before. And what a difference! The space feels so much better now!

Maybe a raised platform with storage for the bed. Could be super wide or have it flush with the mattress. Can have 2 steps to step on to the platform depending how high the platform is. And don’t forget to add a ducted range hood for the stove. Also a skylight in the bathroom for more sunlight could be nice and an exhaust fan for humidity!

I love the house so far!!! Love all the wood that you guys have incorporated into the design, as well as the line of the house! One thing I will caution you about, you might want to watch the furniture placement in terms of where the traffic flow will be... In other words, keep an open area where people will be walking. For example, in your pic, you have your bed situated in front of a doorway. That means, ppl will have to walk all the way around the bed to get to the door. If you simply switch the head of the bed to the opposite wall below the window, you create an open walking path to the door. Same issue with your kitchen bar area. You need enough room for stools, and walking behind them, not in front of the sliding doors. It sounds unnecessary, but believe me, it will make your life alot easier. I will say one thing you guys nailed, which is a huge design faux pax that many ppl do, you didn't position the stove right next to a walkway, or doorway! Thank God! That is a very dangerous thing to do. If someone is walking by the stove, and catches the handle of a pot of their arm, or clothing, the contents of that pot is going to end up on one or more ppl... Anyway, cant wait to see you guys get back underway, and would love to know the styrocrete recipe!!!

It's interesting to watch everyone I used to follow on the road settling down into homesteads or base camps and what that looks like to each individual, Its both a beautiful progression and yet a somber nostalgic pull towards what I used to love and enjoy. I'm still saving for my tiny house adventures and life is an ever changing envelopment of where the roads less traveled lead. I'm truly happy for you guys. 🥰

Love hearing your ideas for your house. For your kitchen sink, I'd say a double sink instead of one just big tub. That way if you're working on something, but you need to rinse your hands you have somewhere to do that. Also, I've always been told to put your piano on an inside wall so that the temperature fluctuations don't mess with the sound board so much. I know your plans will grow and change as you progress with the build. And ultimately, you do what makes you happy. It'll be fantastic!

I love the animations for the plans, it makes it come to life so much ! My boyfriend and I are working on building our home as well and your channel has been a great inspiration ! My few inputs would be not to put a couch or seat next to the stove because of the heat, for a bed it would be quite uncomfortable. Dont forget as well a space to store your wood inside close to the stove. Your kitchen design seems to be missing a fan above the stove as well ? Keep it up ! ❤❤

This is going to be a beautiful home. Love how you added where the furniture and appliances will arranged. The big open space is great for company and also creates a space for you and Barren to do many projects. The big bar area is a must too. Such fun to design your own home and it doesn’t have to all be done at once. We worked on our home many many years changing our minds once we moved in on a few things as the years went by. Such possibilities with your land and your gorgeous views. I am surprised you have rattlers up there at 8,000 ft.

That is so exciting! I love the layout ideas. I’m sure you’ll change this or that as you guys see the need. I like the idea of the bookshelf running across the top of the wall. However, I wouldn’t extend it so far as over the stove. I can’t explain the greasy mess that accumulates above a cooking surface, but, I’m sure it wouldn’t be good for the books.

A couple things my mind says are awesome. Generous bath, not huge but workable for two people at the same time, score!! Modest bedroom is great, and with a nice sitting balcony, perfect. And flexible floor space, win, win!! And I agree on the couch, put it out opposite the stove, rather than next to, because both sitting get heat and not one roasted and the other freezing. Love this house!!

I watched Trent & Allie build their tiny home in the Utah mountains. By the time the home was finished they had a baby and realized the house was too small. Then they built a garage twice the size of the house to try to compensate which is better than nothing but doesn’t really increase the size of their too small house. Your house size only works if you never have kids. You don’t think a baby will need much space until you realize too late it’s not the baby that needs to space but the crib, the walker, the rocker, the playpen, the swing, the changing table, the dresser etc.
@francesmalzahn9994
@francesmalzahn9994 Жыл бұрын
In past videos, they have mentioned that is why they are building it so that they can add on. Also, when you really think about it, not all the things you listed are really something a baby needs. Elsa and Barron are used to living very minimally and I doubt that will change when they have children.
@ridingtheroad185
@ridingtheroad185 Жыл бұрын
yes, Trent and Allie built it with a bedroom for kids in the basement and a place above the garage for his older son when he stays. LOL Now they realize how crazy that was. Babies may not actually need all those things, but parents need a lot for the baby if they plan to get things done.

What a great video. Love the walk thru tour of your home, particularly the amazing animations. Great creative talent putting this together! Really makes it seem so real. Maybe can share how the animation for the video were created at some point? The perspective of video and animations was spot on. The area you might think over a bit more is plumbing, and the routing. For example since bathroom and kitchen share a common wall, this could be opportunity to minimize amount of pipes. Since outside walls are concrete, electrical can be a bit more challenging. One suggestion is to include electrical outlets on the side of the kitchen island. Can be handy to charge a phone, or plug in a laptop. Overall the layout and design look so amazing.

Looks amazing... we are in NW CO at 7K' and we just lost the last of our snow on the ground about a week ago, also feel you with the wind! We are also fully off grid, wood burning stove, solar with a propane backup generator. We also work remote at least half the time so deal with internet/cell service issues. Last year upgraded to bifacial panels and lithium batteries, its amazing the improvement. Please do look at getting access to bifacial panels as when the snow is on the ground it can pickup the reflection from underneath. Also look at having adaptable space in your kitchen for at least a single drawer dishwasher (Fisher Paykel makes one that only uses half a cabinet height). We have found that a dish washer doesn't pull that much power/water, I just make a point to only use it during the day. Also make sure you have space for a washer at least, same thing we found it doesn't pull that much power/water and I run it during the say when the sun is high. We just saved up the money to get very efficient models for both. If you plan on hosting a lot and/or having kids it will be really helpful - even if you dont they are nice to have for days you are just worn out.

First, I'm so stoked for you guys continuing to make progress on the house. It's going to be amazing. My only inputs are to think about a wall oven/cooktop instead of the range and to definitely plan for a washer/dryer. As you age, bending down to pull stuff out of the oven can be uncomfortable or even downright painful. The kitchen buildout can be planned to accommodate that by placing a wall oven at just the right height. The cooktop is an opportunity to add a glass top cooking surface that is a snap to clean. Also, while you may not source a washer/dryer right away, have the infrastructure in place now so you can add a set in the future should you want to. I sold my house in 2021 to rent an apartment for a few years and the main thing I miss is my own clean washer/dryer. So weird.
