In the last few videos, I have been hinting at the fact that we were getting rid of our 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and replacing it with a new overland vehicle. Well, after many wrong guesses about the Ford Bronco, the 2022 Subaru Outback WIlderness has arrived! I would have to bet very few people even though the Outback Wilderness was even an option on the list, but in this video, I'm going to go over a bunch of specs and tell you why we thought this was the best new Overlanding vehicle for our family.

The top end power is mind blowing compared to the jeep, but the low end torque for getting over rocks is terrible in the Outback. That’s the one issue that sucks to people coming from the jeep world.

Just got the Outback Wilderness in white as well. Was cross shopping with a 4Runner and couldn't be happier with our decision. We though long and hard about what capability we need and decided that we aren't interested in extremely technical trails or rock crawling. The OBW will be our off-road vehicle and our general road trip vehicle. It's extremely comfortable, relatively economical and is very safe. It's also more than capable of what we need it to do.

Listen, I love the 4 runners and we looked at one last year as a replacement for my wife’s Jeep, but decided against it because it just felt dated. The wilderness is an awesome option for so many people. Obviously you won’t be able to do crazy technical stuff, but the other 95% of the time when you’re just enjoying a trip and tackling gravel roads it will be perfect. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video. I am a wildlife, bird photographer and bought a wrangler JK unlimited to use in the trails and to get to some out of reach places. Since then, we moved near the beach and I got addicted to the open top feel of the Jeep for just cruising around with family. The Jeep is getting old and I am loving the look of the wilderness for my photography but I feel like I will be missing out on the fun of the open top for the other things the Jeep is good for. Not sure what to do! Seems like this wilderness is a very capable vehicle and I’ve never owned a Subaru before!! I’m thinking about it. Also debating the new bronco too

I was just telling my wife how I miss having the doors off the jeep after I saw one driving down the road! I use the wilderness for storm chasing photography as well as getting myself into spots to use my camera and it's the perfect vehicle for that! I drove a bronco a while back and if you have the windows cracked at all they rattle against the door frame... That was all I needed to hear to walk the other way on it. Good luck!

@@roamingwithjosh thank you. I am really on the fence. My Jeep is nice to look at, has a good lift, 2011 but the person before me messed up the headlights to where the drivers side goes in and out. Very frustrating. And when it rains hard, the lights and blinkers, wipers can stop working. Typical Chrysler product. Lol. So I’m thinking of jumpin into a Subaru. Love the open top feel though. Like you said 95 percent of Overlanders don't rock climb the Outback specially the wilderness is just perfect Awesome AWD system Awesome amount of room comfortable driving can still hold a roof top tent the ground clearance on the Subarus are great cause there's no diff pumpkins under there for me and the family with 7 older kid's and 9 grand babies the Outbacks or the Subarus in general are just great for us and what we do so now if I want to rock climb I'll just tow me a side by side with my Subaru thank you and thanks for the videos keep going, and remember stay safe and Overland safely!!!!

Great in depth review, highly appreciated. I have always been a Subi fan. Never had one thought! Let me walk you through my present and previous suv's. Had a 07 Jeep Liberty back then in Ontario, a Defender 90 petrol and a Range Rover Classic 3.5 when I was at uni in Tehran, Iran. Currently driving a 04 Xterra with stick shift and underpowered 2.4 4 banger rock solid suv though. Prior to the Nissan, I was a fortunate owner of a 88 LC FJ 62 with the famous rock solid 3F engine and manual 5 speed box that had sell due to family reasons unfortunately!! And prior to that beast, I owned a 07 Hilux 4WD 2.7 double cab again manual! Apart from the Liberty, I owned the other's back home in Iran as petrol prices are dirt cheap!!! So I know what you're talking about. Having said that, the only real shortage that I and most subaru fans believe in and have encountered are their weak CVT transmissions on the Forester and Outbacks!! Cross Treks rock, but here your video is all about getting rid of your wife's JL Wrangler Rubicon, keeping your beloved savage Gladiator and going for the Outback Wilderness with proper rear lockers, more confort and space for a family of four, less fuel consumption, cheaper price to buy and more importantly reliability compared to Jeep is the way to go my dear friend! 🤞👏👍🏻 I hope Subi won't let their die hard fans down in Canada as I'm planning to return and go for a Wilderness with a manual box instead of CVT!! Even if they don't make manual transmissions, I'll have no choice rather than the CVT! Subi's still have a lot to say and you're not a stranger to that mate. All the best with your cross country trips. Cheers😎

Knee jerk reaction is FAMILY!!! The main thing I'm seeing in comments or lack of is Family oriented. Having a baby to me would be the biggest selling point. 1st mod I'd recommend is trans cooler with fan & ScanGaugeII. As for someone that owns an Excursion & a Subbie OB I still drive the Subbie more. Out of All the trails in NC the Subbie can do 80% of them. If I want to crawl over 2 ft boulders it's nice to have the Excursion. Butt out of All the times I was glad for the Excursion the Need for it was only an hour worth. Good for you for thinking about the Future. Don't really need bigger tires, get smaller rims first.

stumbled upon your channel because I am in the exact same spot, thinking about switching from my '15 Rubicon Hard Rock to a Wilderness. The Jeep is getting a bit long in the tooth (105k miles), trade value Subaru is giving me is dang near absurd, so it makes sense. As a background, my wife had the Grand Cherokee Summit which was an awesome vehicle at first glance, but it was plagued by a plethora of goofy issues. Heck, we had to swap out the transmission at under 60k miles.... So it was an easy choice to go with something economical (comparatively) with most of the bells and whistles that GC offered (minus the heated steering wheel and 5.7L V8, of course :). And truthfully, I am looking at getting another Outback for myself because it checks most of the boxes. If Forrester Wilderness had the 2.4 Turbo in it, it would be a no-brainer, but I cannot deal with the anemic 2.5 they throw into it. So looks like Outback Wilderness it is. Thanks for the informative vid and your channel is great!

Actually - you didn't touch on safety between the two. The OBW has loads of standard safety tech and honestly, I would come out safer in a head to head collusion in an Outback vs a Jeep (probably because of the rollover effect). The OBW and any Subaru is hands down one of the top 3 safest vehicles on the road and only mentioning it because you intend the use the OBW on more highway and city roads.

Well, in April of 2021 I bought a Crosstrek Sport! Being single the 14" shorter and about 500 lbs lighter made a differance for me. I litereally drove it from the dealership to the tire dealer where I swapped out the stock tires for a set of Toyo ATIII's, lifted it 2" and put a skid plate on the front. Been to Moab and Death Valley with it and tackled the same trails as my Ford Explorer with 33's and a locker. Just watch out on the windshields .. I'm on my 3rd since July of 2021 and it's already been repaired once.

I sold my 2011, 2 door wrangler, (my jeepers) in November after putting a down on a Wilderness in October. My man was never a fan of jeeps & wanted me to be in a safer vehicle, plus the age. So going from Solo to a Family which are Goalie players. I needed the room & hopefully save on gas mileage. I love my jeep though she's a big of a pig 🐖. Lol My vehicles are my everyday primary vehicles, that I travel to work for as well pleasure. So I was doing alot of digging around to figure what is the next best step to be. I should be hearing from the dealership any day now, that I will be able to pick it up. So hopefully soon & hopefully be able to enjoy my new ride. @@roamingwithjosh I'll admit it's far more exciting (to me) to see a Subaru conquer an obstacle than watching a Wrangler with 40 inch tires completing the Rubicon Trail. The Grand Cherokee doesn't even have a locking dif like the smaller Cherokee or Subarus. Looking forward to many Subaru videos from ya. My wife and I are actually contemplating selling our gladiator Rubicon and getting a wilderness because we do 80% to 90% of our driving and adventuring on very very normal serviceable roads and what not. Are gladiators our main car and we don’t drive the vehicle terribly and the Rubicon gets 15.5 average miles per gallon for us here. I get you don’t buy a jeep for fuel mileage but when it’s listed that it could get 22 highway and possibly 4 miles per gallon more combined, it’s hard to swallow filling that tank 678 times a month with as much as we drive. I actually think this might be our next car if I can convince myself that it’s a better choice than our current gladiator Rubicon
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that’s tuff. I’m not sure I could get rid of my gladiator and I’m happy my wife allowed me to keep both. The gas mileage is a huge difference, I’m just under 22mpg combined for 2250 miles. If you don’t use the gladiator for what it’s intended for then I don’t think there’s even a question to be answered, go wilderness. That’s my two cents.
@BradleyBishop
@BradleyBishop 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's key. If you're doing most of your driving on normal, or even a bit rough, roads, the Outback does quite well. It's not a rock crawler, which the Jeep is/can be (I assume depending on how it's outfitted). When you're not off roading (which is a bit of a misnomer - You're on a road, typically, just a dirt / possibly rough road) then you're on the highway and I think the Outback really shines there. It strikes a nice balance between going off the beaten path and day-to-day driving to and from home/work/grocery store, etc. It doesn't mean Jeeps aren't awesome. They are. I think of them as more "true off roading" - meaning you're no longer on a dirt/rough rough but more of a trail that is kept up, mostly, just by Jeeps driving over them.

I have 24,000 miles on my wilderness. I had an onxy before, the different rear end in wilderness makes huge difference, including reduced mpg. Btw_ we have a 19 ascent. Same motor, same tranny's, same rear end. Yet it's rated to tow 5,000 lbs. Only difference is ascent weighs 400 more pounds AND has slightly bigger tran cooler. If you hook obd reader to trans while driving to monitor temp, you can tow your limit easily and more. We have a 3,000 pound Coleman camper and when loaded it hits 3800 if really over loaded. Outback does great with it. If it's over 85F outside, 60mph or less is ideal, which you should be doing while towing anyway. Only difference is ascent has antisway program, and above 60mph on Windy Day that makes some difference.

My knee-jerk reaction (realization) happened the moment you mentioned “family needs”. I immediately understood that the Subaru Outback Wilderness offered a more tailored experience to meet your families specific dynamics. I Am a huge fan of both Jeep Wrangler and The Subaru lineup, especially the Wilderness trim level. I believe both brands offer a lot to a diverse market seeking to travel off the beaten paved road, and into the adventurous outdoors. For the extreme off-road enthusiasts, the Jeep Wrangler I believe will most likely always wear the crown. However, as you mentioned, the affordability, reliability, and safety of the Subaru brand has a lot to offer the vast majority of what most nature loving families require to reach their outdoor endeavors.

As a Wrangler owner myself, I guarantee you that Jeep doesn’t account for the roll bars when computing that interior space. Those things take up an enormous amount of room and they are calculating from the fiberglass roof to the floor. As I’m sure you are aware, it is immediately evident when you sit in an Outback, that there is far more space than in a Wrangler.

Knee jerk reaction if you didn't have the Gladiator would have been: WTF!!!!!! With you having the Gladiator then this makes perfect since, especially with where you live and the type of places you normally go. We looked at the Subi really hard and my wife almost got one had we kept her Camaro and needed to get a bad weather vehicle to go with it. Instead we just went to one vehicle for her and she always dreamed of having a Wrangler so that's why we got her the JLU Rubicon.
