West Ham got it wrong because of the unrealistic expectations of the fans. We had a squad suited to counter-attacking football, we hired a manager known for his pragmatism, and then we told him to play possession-based football with a high line. We would have been much better off hiring Espirito Santo and telling him "do whatever you want". The other alternative - giving Steidten full control to hire an Amorim or similar and completely changing the squad and style, might work in 2-3 seasons, but there's no way our fanbase would wait that long.

Thank you for that dose of reality. Too many fans are unrealistic and because they are not accountable they just say what they want, and if it goes wrong they can just blame everyone else. Changing the character of a club takes years even if you have a lot of money. We got lucky with Moyes. First he had matured and was ready to build a winning side. Second the squad he inherited had enough depth that he had something to work with. Finally the lockdown, so the team had time to turn their form around without too much toxic negativity. I wasn't thrilled with the style of play in the last couple of years but it was not as bad as some people made out. I also understood that it was necessary to play conservative football while we were in Europe and playing two games a week to save energy. All the teams at our level see a big drop off after they get into Europe because the squad cannot take the workload. Wolves nearly got relegated after their Europa campaign, Leicester did get relegated and Villa have dropped far below the level they were at last season. Up to half way last season we showed that we were learning how to do Europe and the league. If it was not for AFCON taking out Aguerd and Kudus at the same time Antonio was out for three months solid and Paqueta was out for six weeks we could have made Europe again. As for Nuno, he has set up Forest in a style very similar to the one we are trying to leave behind, how ironic is that.

Neil has hit the nail on the head regarding Lopetegui. We didn't need to "play safe" and avoid coaches who hadn't coached in the PL previously. Our squad is so much better than the performances and results we have had under this clueless head coach
