Well said!! My confidence has definitely increased since I started a couple of months ago. I'm very introverted and rarely put myself out there, but I'm so glad I didn't let it prevent me from walking through the doors that first night. It took 4-5 classes before I stopped being nervous. Now I really look forward to my classes. It's the best stress reliever and I'm stepping up my exercise outside of class so I can get better at some moves that are currently hard for me. I really hope the guy who asked is able to persuade his female friends to give it a shot!

I'm so glad you mentioned about the whole trauma thing! I've been training jiu jitsu for about a month now (totally got the bug!) and it has taken this long to have the confidence to roll with anyone other than my boyfriend. He has been amazing to introduce me and help me with techniques, but I know you gotta try out some other bodies. I'm visiting friends in my old city, and came along to an open mat where I could try rolling with my friend, who is a woman, and there was even another woman here too! (I'm the only girl at my gym). Getting to roll with them really gave me the confidence to train with a very sweet but big guy, and honestly I really impressed myself with my speed and strength against him! It's definitely helped my overcome some trauma I have with men being physically overpowering and controlling, and it has given me more drive to carry on! Thankyou for doing these videos, watching them has really shown me that male training partners (although obviously not always perfect) do have a good balance of challenging their female training partners, while being respectful of their size/ ability, and it has been good to know that some concerns or reservations I have about jiu jitsu aren't just me being overly sensitive to certain things

I really love this comment, thank you so much for sharing! You're definitely not alone in having some reservations about certain things in jiu jitsu - but I'm so happy that these videos are somewhat helpful in relieving some worries :)

Hey Kimberly, this is such an inspiring video! I'd love to hear your thoughts and perspective on practicing as a beginner as it relates to partnering and establishing a sense of safety internally as well as with your practice partner. I started training three weeks ago and happened to partner up with a woman who feels like a total energetic match - physically as well as mentally/emotionally- we share a similar fire, passion, and drive, and I love the way we're constantly checking in with one another on the mat as well as encouraging on another to embrace our power. I love the sense of safety I feel in this connection with her. At the same time, I feel like I "should" be mixing it up and working with other people, but quite honestly, I've experienced so many attachment ruptures that safety and consistency in ANY sort of relationship feels like what I really need right now. I was drawn to BJJ as a path to access my inner warrior from a more embodied and integrated state. I'd love to hear your perspective on all of this! (As well as other BJJ practitioners who happen to be reading this, would love to hear your thoughts as well

I recently found out that the ladies in our gym have a bjj girls social media group. They motivate each other to come to training, etc. I think doing something like that in a male dominated environment is really helpful.

The benefits of practicing jiu jitsu for women are pretty much the same as they are for men. However, given that many men - including fit strong men who have trained other martial arts - find training jiu jitsu intimidating and challenging (it's amazing how many don't stick with it for very long if they even start at all), it's little wonder that so many women do too. And of course, women tend to face a range of cultural and psychological hurdles which men don't. Which is why it's so beneficial to have more women who roll speaking about their experiences.

Just self confidence doesn't is enough. You have to train with men too and you have to train punches and strikes and kicks. I mean for self defense. Normal Bjj is awesome but without the above parts it is just half effective if a woman is confronted with a 110 kilo Man, because of the weight for instance. Just my opinion.

Hi Kimberly, I hope it ok to call you by your first name, I am VERY happy for you to tell me I am wrong, all I would ask is that you also tell me why. I think of BJJ as a fantastic sport with strong and useful self-defense far far better than nearly all other martial arts that really have moved too far from their original martial aspects, and are now pure sports or an artform like aikido and Iaido. But I also lump it together with Krav Maga. Another great martial art with strong self-defense aspects. But I do not see either of them as "Self defense training" they take too long to learn, use moves that are simply dangerous on the street (to the defender) and ignore obvious selfdefense targets & moves simply because they are illegal in Jui Jitsu. I am NOT dissing BJJ, I think it is great, I think it has some amazing bio mechanics, and as a sport, a form of fitness training, as a means to learn some aspects of self defense, and build self confidence, it is really out there. infact I teach several of the floor techniques in my own class, Anti mount defenses, Stand-ups. and guards Thanks again for your videos, they are excellent, I truly enjoy them.

I just started my first classes and I’m so intimitaded! I’m thinking about quitting. 😫 I am the ONLY WOMAN in my starting up class. (I’m 19 yo girl and they are mostly men in their 20-30) I feel like I have to proof myself to them all the time. Or is it all just in my head? I’ve though only been to 1 class lol. They also tried to avoid me in the first class when choosing partners so that they would’t have to roll with me. I really want to continue but also I might not want to. I don’t know! It’s so wierd being in an enviroment where there’s mostly guys expecially when coming from a all girl cheerleading backround. Can someone please share their thoughts? Should I continue?😅😖 (PSA I’m not a kid who just learned how to write 😅🙈😂. I’m an adult from Finland who’s first lamguage isn’t English and I’m too lazy to check my grammar)
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! Don't quit after 1 class! Give it another try. But with that being said, it's DEFINITELY not all in your head. For a longggg time, I felt like I always had to prove myself. So you are definitely not alone here,. Unfortunately that does happen - men avoiding the roll. A lot of the times I still have the initiate it. But once you start getting to know the guys you train with, it becomes easier. Do they have any women's classes available?

@Steve Williams 764 okay well that’s good. And I would assume you’re a man. Like I said, you can get hurt rolling with men and women. It comes down to be aware of the safety of your training partners.
