Thanks for the video. The mercury switch (tip switch) is a simple switch and should be replaced if bad, not bypassed. As Technicians we may jumper to test, if the switch tests bad replace it to maintain the safety feature. Also the thermocouple can be gently cleaned with a brass brush to remove particulate buildup. A very fine .004 to .005" wire can be passed through the pilot orifice to clean or blow it out with clean air compressed air. The thermocouple may need to be replaced once a yr on a high use heater. That's from a 40 yr gas man. If you ever had a friend burn up in a fire from a space heater , you would not recommend bipassing a safety feature. I work on life support equipment to qualify my comments. Concluding; bipass to test, replace to run, safety #1. With fire..

Sorry, but here in the UK (at least), just the call-out charge for a technician is more than the cost of a new heater. It just doesn't make any economic sense to repair these things. I doubt if I could even persuade someone to come out and look at it, they'd probably just tell me to buy a new one. I could try to do it myself, but frankly I have no idea how. I'm not even sure specifically what is causing mine to not light. I tried blowing it out with compressed air, cleaning the thermocouple, and checked all the connections (mine looks nothing at all like the one in this video), but nothing works. The cheapest I could find a new one is around £100, and the sad fact is I won't have £100 until the end of the month, so that's 2 weeks I have to freeze because I have no heating. And even at the end of the month, I need that £100 for other essentials. This is why the poor are forced to take risks with dangerous appliances. We have to balance the possibility of injury with the certainty of extreme discomfort. I bet the number of people who die of cold is significantly more than those who dies from gas fires. It's not quite as simple as people just being reckless.

Martha, Make sure your regulator is in correct position. The half dome MUST be pointed DOWN. I made that mistake. Jumped the wires like video. It worked. I remembered in instructions saying something about regulator position. Lost instructions, looked online. Regulator half dome Must be pointed Down! Worked for me, took off jumper wire hook wires back properly and been good to go.

Having the same problem with pilot light going out, and not wanting to disable a safety feature such as the tip over switch, I fixed it by simply turning off the gas, removing the tank, tipping the unit over on its face and then back upright which seems to have reset the tip over switch. Now the pilot light works properly.
@mbrenengen6 жыл бұрын
Good idea, one thing I have found is that if there is any air in the gas line, the pilot light will not stay lit. I've also found that when it's really really cold the pilot light won't warm the thermal coupler up enough, and you need to use it torch.

If your problem is once you press the knob down and the red button but it won't stay lit when you turn it, just keep it held down on pilot for a while and turn it slowly to the first heat setting. I found that if it's really cold sometimes you gotta keep the pilot lit for a couple minutes. It seems like forever so if it's like that I just push a quarter down with it and go back inside for a few minutes if I have to lol.

Hi i had the same problem basicslly all you need to do is first hit down the control knob(the thing u turn around) and hit the red button once and leave the red button but not the control knob note : u have to hold down the knob button to the setting which has the flame and spark sign on it so basically the top one so u have to hold it on that for about 15 secs after that ull have to switch to the first setting and leave the control knob if you want to change to higher settings ull have to wait for like 2 mins so the first one gets a bit hot so it can give fire to the other two then push the control knob slightly (if you push it hard ull find urself not being able to switch, so just push it calmly and change to the desired setting. Kind regards

I've had this heater for about 7 years and use it exclusively in an off grid bath house with lots of ventilation. Recently I needed to bring it into the living area (temporarily) which is a drafty yurt. When I brought it in I had this issue occur in the yurt, where it wouldn't stay lit. I watched this video, and a couple of others to see what could be done and decided to take it back out to the bath house where it usually goes to see if it would still work out there, which it did. What I realized was that the floor in the yurt is not level. I brought it back in the yurt and placed it at a 90 degree angle from where I had first placed it and it lit right up and is staying lit. My point here is that you should first look at whether or not you have this issue before you start disassembling the unit.
@mbrenengen2 жыл бұрын
Wow. Interesting, and yes, that is good advice. The "tilt" switch is there for a reason. How slanted is your yurt?

On the other hand, if your heater doesn't stay lit after you ignite with the heater controls and hold the heat setting control in for a few seconds to allow the thermocouple in the pilot light burner to warm up, then it could be that the thermocouple is dirty or corroded preventing the heater from staying alight. In such a case, remove the guard, and clean the thermocouple (that's the piece of wire that protrudes into the pilot flame) in the pilot until clean and shiny with sandpaper or emery cloth or emery board. When clean, replace the guard and relight the heater as usual, it should stay alight now. I did this to an old portable Gimeg Europa Site Heater and it stays on with a clean blue flame when lit.

So glad I found this. Thank you for posting. "bypass" was the key and I'm not worried about this 'tipping' in my presence as others have mentioned. One note regarding the regulator, mine is not like others have shown nor what the manual shows, so it's impossible to have the 'crown' facing up nor down. Maybe they changed it and just kept same manual. But lit and now I haven't wasted my money. Btw, this is was a brand new unit from HD so I doubt the tilt sensor is bad, just a piece of crap & if this thing did fall it would have to be a big bump and I'd just pick it up. LOL

I have a much older version of a Dyno-glow propane heater. My husband purchased it at least 18 to maybe 20 years ago. I have an all electric house. We got an ice and snow storm in Texas when my husband braved a ride into town. We had no heat for 3 weeks, so we needed that propane heater badly. I use it every year in the winter time, because one of my rooms won't heat up enough. My heater is connected to a larger propane tank. We buy one that is called blue rhino. It worked fine during another no electricity for one week. Now I try turning it on and it just clicks over and over. After about one hour I try it again. It comes on, but won't stay lit very long. I'm a widow now and don't know a thing about how I could fix it. I'm elderly now and can't afford to buy the things the showed on this video. I will see if I can manage getting the wire grill off and cleaning the pilot tube with rubbing alcohol. I need to know if I can do that with just rubbing alcohol, or do I also have to use gasoline? I hope someone will respond to my questions and help me out please. I'm on blood thinners and need heat in my computer room. My central heat is not warming this room enough, and I get very cold.

Just bought one of these bad boys for the office area of our warehouse. Our office is fitted with in wall electric heaters, and they are total electricity hogs. Careful. They are not supposed to be used "indoors". Which is weird. Please make sure to have a working carbon monoxide detector where ever any gas heater is in use.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm pretty sure the "indoors" thing is purely legal. I grew up in Scotland during the 80's. We used these things to heat our homes back then. They're perfectly safe so long as you follow proper safety procedure. Too many Americans suing companies for silly reasons, hence why they won't explicitly say to use these indoors. If you try to use this outdoors the pilot light will get blow out.

For a defective tip over cut off switch contact the manufacturer. Mine was still under warranty and they sent me a free replacement. Also they said they had a batch of defective switches that were being recalled.

My Big Buddy Heater does this periodically and All I do is blow some compressed air into the gas line and pilot jet area which does get some dust particles in them and mine lights up just fine everytime I do this with a fresh tank of propane and it only takes about a minute of time !!!!
@anthony103706 жыл бұрын
Its not because it eats up oxygen (which it does but that's not the issue) but because you are not supposed to have a propane tank in a living area in case the tank has a leaky opd valve.

I think must people drill a hole in the exterior wall and have the tank outside. As far as the heater using oxygen I am assuming this is a ventless heater meant for indoors.

Wow.... i feel like a dumbass, ive never used one before so i was having a hard time starting it and all i had to do was hold down the pilot button and red button at the same time and it started just fine once i put it to low, so your video helped a lot even though its for something so little, we're waiting for a new woodstove and haven't been able to use ours because now its sitting outside, so its really cold in here so i appreciate the help. was easier than i thought it was... :) its gonna be 15 degrees by morning.

+Bluemeg1234 Not at all. I did the same thing until I did what you did and looked up how to make it light. It's cold. I understand. Please be careful and don't poison yourselves with the heater.

Any of you people ever think of reading the instructions before you try to use anything?

This heater has been the biggest frustration since day 1. I've had it for 4 winters now. To start off with, it came with the regulator insulated backwards so it can't lay horizontal when connected to the tank, only vertical - but still works fine, nevertheless the problem has always been the pilot. The slightest vibrations shut it off, just walking past it shuts it off, a sneeze near it shuts it off. When working, just one burner can heat a 1000sq ft room for 4 days.

Thanks for the tip bud!! This solved my problem.

I got 2 of these units and this trick worked on one of them. What else could it be on the other one? Any idea?
@mbrenengen2 ай бұрын
Same symptom? Watch the follow-up video for how to fix the switch. Otherwise, sometimes it will not light because there is air in the gas line. Make sure the regulator is facing the right way, then keep trying to light it, and eventually the air will get purged from the line.
