There is also one other possibility for those of you who have tried everything Matt has showed you and still have no luck there is a rod that runs up the steering column on older model Jeeps I know for sure that runs to your transmission and will not let it shift out of park if not engaged it will have a wire running to it similar to what you would expect to see maybe a bicycle brake cable in but it will run from your column under your dash and loop back around to your gear shifter

Unplugged the solenoid on my 93 ZJ and it didn't disengage the interlock. It seems the solenoid had locked up and didn't disengage until I yanked on the cable coming from the steering column to break it loose. Hope this tip helps someone as much as the video helped me

I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot that wont come out of park. Been trying to find some info on where the shift interlock is located. Unfortunately mine isn't located where yours is. At least I found that I can get it out of park by using the manual override switch located on the passenger side of the stick shift cover. Just pop out the round cap and push the white lever towards the front of the vehicle.
@Brady.John878 жыл бұрын
the shift interlock or brake switch has the brake lights daisy chained of it in my mustang so bypassing it isn't an option. if you do this make sure you check your brake lights, you sure fire way for most to see if it is your brake switch is when you can't shift out of park and your brake lights aren't working.

@JohnDoe-gm5qr9 жыл бұрын
Those interlocks seem like they might be a solenoid that slides a lock pin out so that you can move the lever freely. In my car, I can hear it when I push the brake in park. I had a Dodge Neon with an automatic that was a bit hard to get out of park and it ran fine aside from that. It was somewhat annoying but I did not keep it long enough to see how bad it really can be.

I am guessing when you when the car starts as you turn the key there is some loss of power of a relay disconnect to the cabin power for a half a second to the hi amps somehow dont fry the computer of something. I notice my radio stop temporarily when I start the car. When that power drops out for a second it would be like disconnecting that thing.

Maybe you can help. I have a 07 JK. I had the top off and it rained. I quickly put a tarp over it. Well it puddled up a lot of water. The next day I tried to lift the water by pushing the tarp up so it'll spill out from the sides of the jeep. Well, the tarp ripped and all the water went into the jeep and over the dash. Now I have no lights on the dash and the jeep is stuck in park. I'm lost with ideas for a fix. How can I get it into drive so I can drive it to my mechanic so he can replace sensors that got damaged and fuses that probably blown? I could really use some help. I'm good with mechanics but clueless to electronics. Is there a by pass. I'm sure it's stuck in park for safety reasons of the electronics. It was a good amount of water. Probably enough to fill a 5 gallon paint bucket worth of water dropped over the dash all at once.

Thanks for your continued awesome videos. Question, any insight into: key stuck in ignition and ignition not turning to off position? This happens when it is cold outside. Works okay during the summer heat. This started after I had the transmission and transfer case rebuilt. I think there is something in the steering column that is messed up. There are no cable adjustments at the shifter lever. Much obliged.
@kastyr19843 жыл бұрын
You ever get this solved?
@avjeeper70063 жыл бұрын
@@kastyr1984 I did not fix this yet. I think I know what it is though. There is a mechanism in the steering column that is connected to the gear shifter that needs to be adjusted. When I force the key to unlock, I can hear clicking in the steering column and I can see some flexing in the steering column. When the gear shifter is in park, the mechanism in the steering column is suppose to unlock the key mechanism to remove they key. It's work to drop and get inside the steering column.

Hey this happened to me years ago - all I had to do was push the shifter forward (as far as it will go without breaking stuff) and key was able to be removed! It was THAT simple!
@avjeeper70062 жыл бұрын
@@heidizeitz3160 Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've done that but no-joy. There has to be a cable or linkage adjustment somewhere, maybe inside the steering column? IDK?

I have an 88 Cherokee 4x4 and i'm having problems accelerating. Someone told me it was possibly the Passing gear cable ? Can anyone help me with this issue ?
@l337pwnage11 жыл бұрын
If it is not automatically downshifting when you floor it, then you are probably correct. If it is downshifting but just lacks the power to accelerate, that is just a Jeep thing, J/K. ;p But in that case there is another problem. I would get a Chilton or Haynes manual and go from there if nobody has any quick fix ideas.

That was not a "safety recall', that's a "moron recall". Rip it out and throw it away. It was put in because women kept running people over by putting it in gear with their foot on the gas due to the fact that they can't tell the difference between the gas pedal and the brake pedal. Gee, and I can't figure out why it used to be illegal for women to drive, rofl.
@l337pwnage11 жыл бұрын
bleepinjeep Well, if it is shiftable while unplugged, It would seem that is not much different than if it was flat out missing. At least that is intuitively how I see it. You just have to decide is there anyone who you might let drive it who might run you over without that device installed? Also, you could integrate that into an antitheft system if you were so inclined, so it can have legit purposes. I drive a manual CJ so it's up to me to put my foot on the brake and take it out of gear before I hit the key, or I'll go for a ride, lol.

+l337pwnage lol wrong....so mad at you lmao
@JohnDoe-gm5qr9 жыл бұрын
+l337pwnage I would imagine that probably also saves the transmission from necessary wear and tear. That is because it is not a good idea to move it from reverse to drive or the other way around without being at a full stop. The only thing worse are those ones who like to take off like a bat out of hell just 2 seconds after starting the engine. I am no mechanic but there is a multitude of bad things we do our transmissions all the time like not changing the oil/fluid just to name one. I have a 2006 Jetta 2.5 that I never let anyone else drive. I don't like people who downshift rather than just using the brakes. It shortens the life of my $18.36 per liter fluid and those dummkopfs just don't realize how expensive it is to replace a transmission or they don't realize that I hate car shopping and don't want to do it every F-ING day like they have become used to apparently.
@l337pwnage9 жыл бұрын
John Doe I'm 99% sure this particular interlock only locks it in park(Every one I'm aware of is like that). Once you are out of park, you can move it from drive to reverse at any time you want. Any protections from that kind of damage, if they exist, are usually either internal to the transmission and/or part of the engine management. For example, many modern cars limit your engine RPMs to around 3,000 in neutral. You're correct about revving a engine after just starting. I know there was a version of the BMW M5 with had a moving redline marker on it's tachometer. It would start low and go up as the engine got warmed up. As far as downshifting, there are abusive ways to downshift, but I never worried about it. I would only worry if I had a vehicle with a transmission that was weak or had known issues. Or, since your vehicle might be turbocharged, there could be issues there. I never owned a turbo car, but I know maintenance is VERY important on them and repair costs are high.
@JohnDoe-gm5qr9 жыл бұрын
+l337pwnage Mine is not a turbo but I have heard of some Audi TTs with a similar but direct injected engine with a turbo. The VW 2.5 is a 5 cylinder engine and fairly quick with no turbo. I wonder how much fun the TT is. Although mine is not a turbo I am careful not to knowingly abuse it. They can last a long time if taken care of and all that stuff. It would be interesting to see how long they do last. It has 130,000 miles and still runs like new. I got it with 96,000 miles and changed the transmission fluid. It is not hard but they will tell you that it is sealed and does not need changed. I know better than that! Even BMW is that way BUT the maker of their transmissions disagrees and says to change it. I have never believed that there is a lifetime fluid. Whoever tells you there is would be just blowing smoke!!!
