Hi Robert, First off I want to say how much I appreciate your Volvo videos! I'm the proud parent of a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE wagon. Just did a lot of body & electrical work to get it back on the road after about a year. A week after I got it inspected, the engine cut out while driving.I haven't been able to start the engine for weeks. It cranks, but you can't hear the fuel pumps engage. They're pretty new, and I tested them by bypassing the relay. They're fine. However, they don't engage, even after I bought a new relay, replaced the radio suppression relay, and rebuilt the distributor including a brand new hall effect sensor. I even soldered on a new wiring harness for the hall effect sensor, since the old one was pretty ratty. Still no start. Have replaced power stage and checked approximately 10981924810 ground connections. Also just tried out a junkyard ignition ECU (in the right kick panel). No start! So sorry for the rant, but I figured if anyone would have a suggestion, it might be you. Keep on keeping on!

Always good videos... I had the same issues with the car not cranking..I changed the relays, the key ring, and even did a number of resets . IN the end it was teh netural switch. I confirmed this by putting the key in start mode then moved the transmission lever back and forth 20 times really fast... then the car started right up. Turns out this is a common problem.

These Volvo I5's have a rare hiccup that happens from time to time. It's called the Lawnmower syndrome. If someone starts the car and doesn't let the motor run long, and shuts it off (like moving the car to move it far enough to get the lawnmower out of the garage), it can cause the fuel in the piston area to wash the oil off the piston walls. At that point you will have NO COMPRESSION which will cause the car not to start. Two ways to correct it: 1. Long crank. 2. Add oil to pistons & crank.

That happened to me once when I try to crank the car and realized I had left a tool on the engine and immediately shut the car off. Car wouldn't start until I cranked it like 10 times. Thanks

I'm saying that you can not get codes from a car that has had the battery removed. Have you checked and verified the other items in the video? What is missing? Fuel pressure? Spark? Compression? Timing?

Robert I enjoyed your video, one other thing that may prevent a car from starting would be corrosion in the cables either at the battery or to the starter and that can be checked by doing voltage drop tests on those cables, there are you tube videos on this if you add this dimension to your videos it would be that much better.Anyway, great video.

Robert, I did find your video very helpful and informative. Obviously, I would not have been watching it if I understood how to troubleshoot problems as well as you do. My comment about meter usage was to clarify for any one that might be using one for the first time. You were explaining auto problems, not how to use a meter, and you did say that we should read the instructions! Good work. Thanks.

Hi RObert, I do have some questions. My car has the same symptomps, it's a 1998 Volvo s70 2l turbo charged T5. Sometimes rarely, sometimes every morning it just won't start. No crank, won't turn over. Strange is, that if I'll pull the hood opener at my left leg, than it starts. SOmetimes I have to open up the trunk, than it starts. Sometimes it does nothing at all even if I'll do these things. I am curious. Does my car has any kind of sensors, joints near to the latches which is not ok, or just the movement of the opening can move the cable a bit which runs the sign from the ECU to the starter of the car? Best regards, Andras from Hungary :)

Your videos are a big help! Thanks Robert! I have a Volvo that ran on a low tank of gas for months and had a problem with burning oil but ran decent. It stop one day, so it sat for 6 weeks, then I replaced the starter because there was no crank. Then it turned over, no combustion. So I tested the spark and got a new distributor & plugs and no start. So I tested my compression just because. Dry: 90-125 per cylinder, average. Then wet test; 150-200. & it started after my test! I waited a few hrs now there's no start. Cranks over but no combustion. I want to check codes now with my obd2 but can't start the car... what should I do next?

Hey, Robert, we were just gifted a 1998 Volvo S70 GLT. It sat for 4 years and we have replaced everything we were supposed to replace. We started it today and let it run a few minutes. We turned it off to check and fill the tires, but it wouldn't start again. Nothing. No dash lights, nothing. I did notice a faint noise that I believe is the fuel injectors. But otherwise, the battery might as well be dead (it's new BTW).

Sometimes my '98 XJ8 takes two cranks to get started. Usually it starts within 2-2.5 seconds of cranking. But sometimes I know to stop, pause for a moment, and then try again. I'm now trying to push the accelerator pedal at least half way down before attempting to start, hoping that will be the little trick I need. Do you have any similar situations on your XJ8 and if so, what are you or did you do to correct it? My wife is afraid it won't start again sometime when we're out.

At 3:30 of your video, you say to set your meter to read battery voltage, but then you set it to AC voltage setting for 50v range, on the right side of the dial selector. I think you mean to set it to DC voltage setting for 50v range, on the left side of the dial selector. Just a FYI for those using one of these meters for the first time. Then you read the battery voltage on the DCv scale of the meter that goes from 0 to 50. The battery tester scale (red/black bars) on the bottom of the meter screen are for 1.5 and 9 volt flashlight or watch batteries, and are tested with the switch set in the upper right section of the dial selector.

Hi I'm wondering if you can help me out here. I have a Sonic Chevy 2015 and on Sept. 2018 it was being sluggish on turning on. After a week, one morning- the car started making a clicking noise and the lights would fade when I try to turn on. It took about 4 tries and then finally the car didn't make a sound nor the lights came on. I took out battery and take it to a mechanic who said battery was at 70% and he went ahead and charged the battery for me. When I placed the battery back into the car it was still sluggish turning on, but it DID turn on. I take it to my dealership two days later and they ran diagnostic and replace my battery with a brand new battery. They said they cleaned out carbon build up and added some fluid to the car etc. Car running fine. NOW in Jan. 13th 2019, I am noticing that when I turn on the car it seem sluggish. It just started about 4 days ago the car seem a little slow to turn on even though a new battery was put in??? Any ideas what it can be? The dealership said everything good so I ASSUMED they checked the alternator and made sure it was not that at all!

These videos were very informative. I am having trouble with my honda accord 2004 lx it cranks won't start. This vehicle has direct ignition system. I took out one other plug connectors and pit a plug in it to see if it sparks am it does not. At first I changed battery and that cleared all codes. I don't know how to reach my cause of no spark with out the trouble code. And not sure where these cam or crankshaft sensors are in this vehicle. Any guidance on how to proceed now with the trouble shooting my issue will be appreciated. No spark no start issue with cleared codes is is my case. Thanks

Rizwan Chaudhry Always read the codes and document them before clearing them. You should visit a Honda forum to try to figure out the location of those sensors. You could also try Google. My guess is one of them have gone out.

Hi Robert, I have a 1997 850. When I turn the key, all I get is a zinging sound. Brand new battery so I know it’s getting the proper power. What’s the issue? Timing?

Robert, Your videos are helpful. I am somewhere in between the two situations you are describing. I have a 95 Volvo 850 T-5R. I can start it up, but if I drive only a short distance, turn it off, get out then come back to start it up after only a few minutes or right away it does not start. No cranking is heard just a click. I wait 10-15 minutes it then starts up without a problem, If I start the day and drive for 10-20 minutes, then the problem does not occur, it starts up without any issues for the rest of the day. I replaced the fuel pump relay but problem persists. Any thoughts?

Hi Robert, today while out grocery shopping, I had a no crank problem with my 98 V70. When I returned to the car, the beeping that normally happens when you leave the key in the ignition was sounding off. When I tried to crank the car, I was surprise to find out it wouldn't crank. I tried a jump, it didn't work; I finally had the car towed by home; the battery and started relay is fine; where do you think I should go from here.James BanksColumbia, SC

Hi Robert we still can’t fire up the 850glt after replacing: starter/ignition switch/ and checked all relays.I suspect the battery because I mistakenly filled cells with distilled water? Could this be the problem? It’s a no cranking situation and all electrical components work fine, even the stereo when code is entered.

Hi, I had s question about a problem with my car. I have a Audi A6 2003 and it seems to not want to start. It is cranking but it's been doing this mostly in the mornings when the car has been parked all night (off). Well it did this yesturday but I pumped the gas and it started. Today I'm doing this and nothing. I am trying to hear the fuel pump but I need to have it more quiet (neighbor is cutting his grass). I have changed the oil & oil filter. I have not changed the spark plugs neither the coil caps since I bought it used. It also has a power steering leek, as I look under the car I see it's wetting the alternator and more down under the car. Would you give me any suggestions on this car?

Victoria Cantu My first suspect would be a temperature sensor, like the coolant temp sensor. If it is telling the car that it is already warm/hot, it will not supply the needed fuel for cold starts.

I've had the fun of an intermittent no crank no start. My dad and I suspected the ignition switch, rather than wait for it to progress to a steady failure I replaced that. Been a couple weeks and it seems like that was the right call, though until it's been a month out I'm not calling it conclusively fixed. I hate intermittent problems.

could be a blown fuse for the electronic throttle body or the electronic control module. Check all fuses that involve car starting. Maybe a bad ignition module, break pedal sensor, brake light.
