im a linguist and just saw ur short, amazing isnt it, like less than 100 years later it started to shift :D however this phenomenon is called historical spelling english has a pretty deep orthography, which means that the difference between what is said and what is written is very different, like in tomb and bomb, but kernel and colonel some language r far less deep, like for example turkish, which almost has a 1:1 correspondence between speech and writing some languages r far deeper than english, for example tibetan, where u write "dbus gtsang skad" but say "üs tsang ke"

That spelling of "feete" or "foote" reminds me of the german spelling (my native). Like "Fuß" (foot) and "Füße" (foote). Do I get that wrong?

nope, english is a germanic language, just like german nee, engels is een germaanse taal, net zoals duits nein, englisch ist eine germanische sprache, genau wie deutsch this is in english, dutch and german, see how similar they r?

Trust me, the unpredictable pronunciation compared to spelling isn't exclusive to English. I speak two languages that have drifted quite far away from their spellings like this. The other is Danish.

It's fascinating how things change. Romance languages seem to have a closer relationship between spelling and sound

@@profoundlypointless Interesting. I'm pretty sure it's the case with Norwegian too. When Norway separated itself and its language from Denmark the spelling was changed.

@@profoundlypointless Because the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples have such a profound hatred of Rome that they stole their script to show to their peoples how utterly illogical the Romans are.

Middle English isn't intelligible, it's like speaking with a 400 year old hillbilly. "As I was walking all alane, I heard twa corbies making a mane; The tane unto the t’other say, ‘Where sall we gang and dine to-day?’" So two crows?? 🤔

it is a lot of the time tho (especial in written form), like everyday speech would mostly be intelligible also that seems like an old northern dialect (maybe even old scottish?), which is further removed from actual middle english, north english is actually so far removed nowadays that many consider it a different language
This ruined English spelling
