@@Y2Kr4SHM4N I was mostly referring to the look of the film, not all of its qualities. But, to be fair, I was waiting for one of these comments. Truth is, I think most of the Star Trek movies have aged well in terms of their special effects. The first movie has that classic 1970s feel, and you can feel the scope and money invested into the film. Wrath of Khan continues to make use of those tried-and-true special effects, but you could also tell the budget had been slashed, but Nicholas Meyer knew how to use what he had. Star Trek VI, I think is the best looking Trek movie with the original line-up, and like First Contact, has visually aged very, very well, not just in effects, but in costumes, lighting, styles, etc. Those are two special movies.

If the TNG writers and producers were braver, they would have promoted Picard to Admiral after Best of Both Worlds and made Riker captain of the Enterprise, with either Data or a certain blonde firecracker for his XO. Would have been plenty of ways to keep Picard on the screen, and really establish progression with the characters in the series. Voyager took a mysterious seemingly unstoppable force of nature and turned them into an every day run of the mill star trek alien. By the end of the series they were no more intimidating then the Romulans. A good example is Voyager alone being able to go toe to toe with a Borg tactical cube, the Borg equivalent of a warship. In the past regular Borg cubes were able to take on and destroy entire fleets of advanced federation star ships. The mere siting of a single cube caused panic and terror across the quadrant. And despite that it is completely unlike the thermal exhaust port situation where one lucky fighter craft could lob two torpedoes to destroy the entire station. This "weak" sport was well hidden (Data said that it had no critical systems, so he and sensors were fooled). But more importantly, it took the combined firepower of an entire (and quite capable and well armed) fleet to take advantage of that "weak" spot. Like all Federation vessels there's 2-3 speeds at warp, maximum warp that poses no danger to the ship (The Enterprise E's highest recorded and canon is warp 8 but other sources are in the range of 9.5-9.9), maximum warp that puts a fair deal of stress on the ship but can be sustained for a period of time (usually 0.5-1.0 more than maximum standard at varying lengths depending on the vessel) and then the last one is pushing it into the realm of "if we keep this up for a half hour there won't be a ship left" and if you choose option 3 then it's a gamble what will fail first, the warp core or the structure of the vessel.

One thing i find which doesn't get mentioned often, if at all, is the helmsman of the Defiant. The Defiant was one of the first ships to meet the Borg Cube as far as I am aware and while dozen of ships have been decimated, he kept her going all the way to Earth. Don't get me wrong, Worf probably ordered certain evasion patterns, engineers kept her heart going etc. but unless it was cut in a way we don't see it, Worf is already on the floor when the Defiant makes that last attack run but the Pilot just keeps going and firing without any shown hesitation nor protests the order to commit suicide by ramming the cube. Makes me wonder just how battle-hardened that officer is as I believe this is meant to take place during the Dominion War and hope any ship he transferred to after this can appreciate his skill.

Yea. I always thought it was a bit rushed. A couple of minutes compressed into a couple of seconds. The sequence of the battle was speeded up for pacing in the movie.

There is a video analysing the battle with additional information somewhere on KZbin, apparently Starfleet had set up multiple perimeters that would damage the cube as much as possible and then retreat. All in all they did much better than the last time but it is still the Borg and they definitely didn't just sit with their hands under their asses the entire time, this cube was definitely stronger than the last one that came for earth.

This movie got me into Star Trek. It was the first Star Trek moment. Of course, it's a bit of a wrong start, but tbh, I loved it. I watched Cpt Kirk's adventures, Cpt Picard's, Cpt Janeway's and Cpt Archer's. Atm I'm busy with the DS9 series. But The Borg in Voyager was awesome. I missed some of the thrill and excitment in TNG of the Borg. Nevertheless, I loved the show.

A movie I absolutly wish I woulda seen in theaters. I instead watched Nemesis in theaters, while it was okay, it didn't meet the level of quality as this one. I think this movie is probably the best of them all. The only thing I wish more of is a longer space battle in the beginning.

That whole scene was and is amazing, but not seeing the battle and only having the audio only adds to the dread. The starfleet defence fleet sounds so confident before the engagement it gives us a false sense of security. The borg voice coming in, then the collapse of the fleet seconds later.

Depending on what you read/timeline emergency impulse drive power is an option. That would move the ship at about 25% the speed of light.

I've always wonder what the exact speed is for "ramming speed". Is that a certain setting on the speed controls? Wouldn't ramming speed just be the same as fastest speed possible?

@@dongilleo9743 I agree. Ram them with the best possible speed.A defiant class starship impacting a borg cube at 25% o 5% the speed of light would do some damage.

All this is assuming the Borg would let the Defiant ram their Cube in the first place. I can't imagine the Borg haven't had someone try to ram a Cube sometime in the past. Defiant has no weapons, no shields, and no main power. As soon as the Borg detected the Defiant moving in, they would give it priority attention, hold it in place with a tractor beam, and quickly blast it to pieces.
