The ending is really heartbreaking..the way the ending focused on them roaming the streets carefree and in love just drove home the sense of loss of future and happiness that was taken from them by the society of their time and it is really really sad

This was one of the most hearbreaking, gut-wrenching movies ì have ever seen..i couldn't get over it for 2 days straight and was just crying non stop thinking of the fate of birdie and jia hans beautiful love story and also realising that that was the fate shared by thousands of other similar couples in the past and also in the present just becoz the world couldn't accept their love

This story actually scared me, I don’t particularly like anyone (I usually talk to girls) but i’m sure i’m kinda into guys. This story fucked me up like what’s gonna happen to me in my future. I’m 18 years old and Asian, I planned to never come out to my parents as i’m fucking scared of their reactions. So fuck it, i’m scared as fuck for my future.

This movie is so tender. The cinematography and dialogue that never explicitly points out their deep feelings, feel so real. The movie carries a bitterness that rests among it all. So many important scenes, yet none of them tell us exactly what's going on inside their heads. It's a book quote, it's a prayer, it's an excuse to be away from the army for at least a day, it's an outing of a priest and it's the shift in society after the war. The struggles feel so real, as does the rejection of those who would most likely understand. It's love in the wrong time and as I watched, I kept on wondering how many loves broke because of the timing, because of the circumstances and because the people held themselves back for their whole lives. It's heartbreaking but tender and it left me in pieces for quite a few hours. It's such an important movie

This whole movie was so beautiful but fucking hurtttttt. At the very end allllllll those years later when A-Han playfully asks Birdy if he can say he's gay out in the open yet, but instead Birdy says that back then he actually was in love with him. OML the way A-han's face sunk into sadness and joy was so heartbreaking.

It’s funny to see the quote from the Director because that’s exactly how I felt about the ending. I also feel the same as you about the ending. You managed to sum it up in a way I couldn’t. I couldn’t enjoy the closure of the ending. I couldn’t feel the happiness of their reunion because it felt like so much was lost and nothing can make up for it. I love this film to pieces but I don’t know why not being able to feel hopeful or positive about that ending bothers me and affects me so much.

this movie touch us in a place of unhealed pain. It bring us back to the kids we were when we started to hide our feelings and desires, because we were scared or even ashamed. The ending is the most heartbreaking part because... as an LGBTQIA+ person... It dosn't matter how old you are... you understant the feeling of not being allowed to be or to experience. Now we look back to the moments we lost and it fvcking hurts... We didn't have the power to choose... society did that for us in the most cruelty way possible

I'm so glad I came across your video! I ugly cried so much at the ending too and did so for several days after. Even though I was born into a more accepting generation, the societal repressions still stunted my own abilities to find that "train of happiness", making this ending hit home way too hard. I understood the third act , as I have lived it. It isn't that there was a shift in tone. It's that a love like this will stay with you forever, it doesn't go away. You don't "shift" to it, as it is always there, and so the phone call is more or less the present and the past talking to each other and echoing on. It is part of you. And as I replied to someone else in this section, I'll copy it here. To every young man and young woman and young individual, however you may define yourself : I'm speaking from the point of view of a 65 year old male. 1) Coming out is up to you, and the degree you come out is up to you. 2) No one ever knows what's going to happen to them in the future, regardless of orientation. You're not looking for surety of the future, you're looking for surety and awareness of your self. 3) At your age, with your generation, you don't necessarily have to be either/or, you might decide you want both/and. Stay away from labels, stay away from limits. Labels are limits. 4) You don't want to spend decades hiding your true authentic self from yourself, it will cost you in ways you can't imagine. Imagine a majestic tree growing in an indoor flower pot, it never enters into its true self, it is always stunted. I have many peers who are shadows of who they were supposed to be, AND THEY REGRET IT. 5) Your parents already have an idea of who you are, tho' they might not discuss it. 6) Live your life for your self. You are going to go to sleep with and wake up with one person your entire life, and that person is you. When you see him in the mirror, will you like and respect his choices? 7) Will it be a struggle? Yes, and of course, it will be one hell of a struggle. Embrace it. You don't want an "easy" life, idiots have "easy" lives, and they end up being a mess. You want a life that provides challenges, and you want to surmount them. That is how you will come to have faith in yourself. 8) Never give up. You can do it, and we're behind you.

This movie made me cry SO HARD!! I've always been open about liking girls and most of the time i've been accepted. But this movie just reminds me how many queer couples couldnt be together because of what society thinks about homosexuality. It almost makes me think "What if i was born back then?". Also knowing the fact that the movie was based on the directors experience and the ending was just what he wished had happened made me ugly cry even more💔 Anyways i'm gonna go cry myself to sleep😭

This movie is one of my favourites (cause I love queer Taiwanese movies anyway) but it’s the melodramatic first love story that you can nearly taste, which makes your heart melt, so you can feel the heartbreak of the characters even more. The music score underlines the bitter sweetness as you mentioned, and I think this is what makes this movie hopeful but shattering at the same time cause of it’s portrayal of how fragile our human interactions are in a time of hardships and happiness the same and how reconnecting is not always the best or easiest way cause of how much time has passed and how we as persons have changed in that time. It makes us question what could have been and could have been done which then create a deep sadness or emptiness even. It just shows how valuable our time with the people we love and cherish is.

i also thought that last part understandably seemed out of place and felt slow, AND YET that was the part that i cried. not the telephone scene, that was a bit cringy for me. i was touched by the last part because it felt that love transcended time and age and physical attraction. they don't look youthful and as attractive anymore but my heart felt that the love they had as youngsters is still there and that touched me and broke me to tears

This movie reminded me so much of my first love. I felt like throwing up a few times because of the tension and huge emotions this movie captured. The fact that its been three days since i watched it and i still break down every now and then when remebering everything that happened just shows how much of a great job the producers did. This movie was just so heartbreaking but at times so sweet. The actors also did an amazing job. Cant wait till im fully healed so i can watch it again and maybe understand eveeryting even better!

wait! I cried like a baby at the end also, but you guys are forgetting that Birdy was an asshole, intensionally breaking the protagonist's heart by dating a girl, beating him, and outing to his parents. In fact, I thought Birdy was dead at the end of second act, when the protagonist was at the cemetary, and the movie actually never made it clear that Birdy actually loved the protagnist or not, it was a romance projected by the protagonist. I really think that this film is excellent for us to start conversation, but at the same time straight people can also relate to this film because falling in love with an assholes is universally heartbreaking. Anyone agree? Oh well.

Thank you for this. I, like many, have watched this movie on Netflix several times over the last week. (Now June 2022) I'm wondering how long Netflix will offer the movie. I was kind of taken a back and disappointed by the last scenes. Not just the change in location but the main characters/actors as well. And they didn't seem excited to see one another after so many years? Kind of unbelievable and hurtful for me. The final scene is beautiful with the younger actors but left me wanting more. I guess that is what makes a great movie.

I didn't like the ending because I was confused about who the characters were, and how the scenes kept on jumping in the 3rd act. I think the story would have gotten its message across if it ended when Birdy and Jia-Han were at the ocean. If Patrick Liu really wanted to add 30 more minutes he could have had a conversation between the two characters, promising that they would see each other at school the next day but never did. The camera then should quickly switch to the other characters' families moving away without contact. The ending was bittersweet because the theme songs reminded us of their experiences earlier in the film.

I personally disagree- I think it’s an accurate representation of how trauma can affect our daily lives. While Birdy lives in a more accepting environment, he instinctively represses himself due to his past interactions with homophobia. Of course, you’re entitled to your opinion- just thought I’d offer a different perspective :)
